Do you think anime in the uk has grown?

I think there's room for both - the watered-down versions for the casual viewer, and the real, uncut deal for the true believers, each given appropriate timeslots. If done right then it could mean a new army of anime fans (those that likes what they saw during the day, and wanted to see more). It's one thing I think the ill-fated CNX did right; it had the Dragonballs and the Tenchis during the day, then put Bebop and Outlaw Star on at night. I miss those days.
Here, here!
I mean, they only have the usual low-scale swearing and nudity that most teenagers are aware/know of. I highly doubt I see >10 year olds up at 10pm, watching it (unless it's bad parenting). So it's really a "no harm, no foul" system.

Mind you, the slip through this system is that, unless you're like us here, and you discuss/research what animes are like, then teenagers may watch scetchy/boarderline scenes from animes without the awareness of these scenes.
E.g. From Evangelion, where Shinji masterbates near Asuka in the hospital. An 11-14 year old kid may not understand what Shinji did.

I think certain companies and 'watered-down' animes, such as (dare I say it...) 4Kids are neccessary. Obviously for the younger audience to become intrested, like reading the back of a book, and suddenly you're hooked to that book's description.
But past the introduction, they should allow things, like the odd spit of blood, low-scale swearing (like "crap," but not "****"), and Magical girl transformation "nudity" (like Sailor Moon).
The rest is pick-and-mix. 15+ should stay as they are, but later showing if on TV. Even if some people find the previous group 'unappropriate', they can show it at these times too.

That's my thinking anyways.

Anime has grown significantly in the uk, especially in terms of DVD sales and brand recognition, the sublime growth of the manga market has had a nice knock on effect too for anime.

However anime and the TV, whether it obe terrestial or cable or whatever, is just as slow moving as it had always been. Unlike CNX, Rapture isn't expecting impossible viewing figures and the Jetix/Manga partnership is a step up from anything 4kids licensed shows have ever achieved, but progress is slow and painful and from what I can tell serves only to give the already overworked anime publishing companies more headaches, atleast for the moment.

This is still good though moving forwards means it isn't moving backwards, though I hope soon enough it can grow past the potential shown when Sci-Fi and CNX shone brightly.

I'm yet to see even one new fan ushered in by the Jetix version of Naruto or the 4Kids One Piece. Hundreds (perhaps even thousands) were first attracted by either CNX or the Sci-Fi Channel - both of whom actually aired their anime untouched, but eventually died out due to poor ratings.
I don't get it.

Did the hundreds/thousands attracted by the CNX stuff suddenly die or become Amish after a few months? Like you said, the shows got crap ratings...which means they weren't really attracting many people at all. :?

Supposedly butchered 4Kids stuff like One Piece still gets new episodes shown and Shaman King repeats are still on regularly...I've seen a few Shaman King Sunday marathons lately.

Since Toonami make the effort to make ads for One Piece and put it in a decent timeslot, surely people watch it...otherwise they either wouldn't bother, or it'd be in a graveyard slot. People are obviously content to watch Shaman King repeats too, since whole days are being set aside for it.

And how are the younger teen/tween fans getting into it? There's a good chance they never even saw CNX, and it's not as if it's common knowledge that these obscure music channels show one or two series.

If it's not stuff like Pokemon, Naruto, Shaman King and One Piece, I really don't see how they'd get into anime at all.

The point is though, and it is rather confusing, that the short lived broadcasts of Evangelopm et all - unedited - attracted by far and away more people to the UK community than the bland reversionings of One Piece and Naruto. And that's despite low ratings. We can talk about something like One Piece sticking around on Toonami - but it's not really anime anymore, just another toothless cartoon. This is why I'm asking the question at the end of my last post - and the answer comes down to personal preference but I'd rather see another short lived, low rating broadcast of Evangelion over the "broken down" version of Naruto if it means attracting more anime fans.

But it's not what the companies want they purchase the lisences to the shows because there gonna get high ratings not for anime fans.

Rember naruto and one piece etc are the only anime these people will see i doubt they would even know it's out in japan there not looking for everything wrong with it.

You only know one piece has been edited etc if you saw the Japanese version.

What people want is something thats going to interest them because of the nanny culture in the uk that can't be shown unless watered down or stuck on channel which not to many people know about.

or you, know, it could be because sci-fi showed their anime at 2am or 7am on a saturday perhaps?

i know i'm nuts and stay up to 3am usually but i really don't think theres that many people who do

and who the hell wakes up before 10 on a saturday :)

Funny, I thought we taped them...
And didn't it have dodgy stuff on it, like for instance... Hentai? XD

Bt it does make it difficult for new fans to be caught in the fad if they're shown at strange times. And ironically, the above joke also explains why some people may think anime is frowned upon. Some people may think Anime is actually Hentai (all the time) and really haven't got a clue.

So unless you're a die-hard fan of anime, or you were looking for porn, then sticking these shows for 12/15+ at 2am may give the wrong impression...

Good point.

I rember looking in the tv guide and it said animated film on sci fi so i thought ah i'll tape that!.

I watch it in the morning expecting something like nadesico and theres this couple in the lift doing filthy digusting thing!

But others you never know!

You've hit the nail on the head there...

If they have to 'water down' certain anime series to make them compatible for the channel's viewers, then they may as well not show them at all. The aren't really showing anime - they are just broadcasting a cartoon from Japan.

I'm with Paul on this one. It's much better to get people to see the real thing rather than some kind of 'compromised' version.

Jetix seem to be pushing Shaman King and Oban alot lately, which are cut less than naruto and one piecef

and compromised on tv isn't always bad. I doubt i'd of ever bought all my tenchi dvd's if it hadn't been cut on toonami. Infact alot of shows on tv i'll buy the dvd's for just to see it uncut

Rapture TV and Red TV are the olny channels to show uncut anime to dedicated anime fans instead of young kids.

Sorry to show my ignorance, but what is Red TV ? What channel is it on sky and what anime do they show ?

I presume he is referring to the channel, Redemption, which is being renamed Rockworld in the near future (if the namechange has not already happened). It is/was basically a goth channel by all accounts and is only available on Sky.

It isn't showing any anime yet. But will be in the new year.
And will be showing:
Gilgamesh and Cromartie High School
On Friday 5th January at 8:30 pm and Sunday 7th January at 6 pm
Rockworld is on Sky channel 368

You hypocrite! You state that Battle of the Planets was one of the things that got you interested in Anime in the first place. That was butchered to hell and nothing like the original Japanese version. They even shoe-horned in a stupid robot called... erm...

We took one step foreword when Jetix UK anounced Oban and Naruto, we took a marathon back when it turned out that Jetix UK dicked us with those addional edits.
The edits from the Toonami US edit are fine what jetix did was a tasteless N-bomb joke.
