Do you think anime in the uk has grown?

We took one step foreword when Jetix UK anounced Oban and Naruto, we took a marathon back when it turned out that Jetix UK dicked us with those addional edits.
The edits from the Toonami US edit are fine what jetix did was a tasteless N-bomb joke.

least we kept the original music for oban, US got the horrid new song
Yes, I do draw something of a consolation from that. But Oban is not enough.

Oban was awesome yes.

Find it some what disturbing yet interesting to see the amount of elitism in the UK anime scene (have always noticed in the US one).
'Oh if it's not from Japan it's not anime'
'Oh people who like <insert> are not real anime fans'
'Oh X, Y, or Z aren't anime cause lots of people like them.'
It's getting like the smegging indie crowd in music.

Anyway back on topic> Yes anime scene has grown, partly through flash in pan anime successes like Pokemon, but also due to the fact that you can buy more than 3 titles in store and the internet is helping bring fans like us together. Other than on-line i know no one else interested in anime. If not fro the inter web would know about 1/4 of the series and movies i do.

I would say that the internet is the single biggest factor as to why anime is more popular today than it ever has been. It's a bottomless well of information, both for the newcomer and the veterans alike, and can provide more insight and detail than a magazine ever could, as well as being a means to get new anime, be it fansub, domestic or import. Were it not for the interweb, my interest probably would have stopped at Dragonball Z on Cartoon Network many moons ago, but here I am...

I'm also left wondering where it's going to go from here. Some companies are dabbling already, but perhaps online distribution via streaming and such is the next step? Another ten-fifteen years time and we may not need DVDs, blu-rays or whatever, we just connect to the site, pick an episode and start watching, similar to how YouTube works. Maybe it's not that far off at all...

... or maybe I'm just thinkin too much?

It's certainly grown far faster in the past six years than it did during the 90s. For example, as a youngster aged nine or ten, I'd read Mean Machines Sega magazine (for my Mega Drive :)), and I'd notice some ads for animé videos released by Manga, back when they first began doing it. Now, I was at least peripherally interested in it because of these ads, but try as I might, I couldn't find any videos in mainstream stores. This rather put me off trying to find animé, until Pokémon and Digimon arrived on the scene and got me properly interested.

So yes, it's grown, both in the scope of its operation (we now have...four companies regularly releasing animé, correct? MVM, Manga, ADV and Beez?), and in the public's perceptions of it. The viewpoint that animé is "cartoon porn from Japan" is now in the minority due to exposure to movies like Spirited Away, but it's still far from being anything more than a curiosity to most casual viewers. And at least it's now fully accessible to those who want it, on the shelves at reputable high-street shops instead of tucked into the corner in your local comic book shop.

The only way forward is if the BBC start showing more, They could fill up that empty simpsons slot. And all the crap is on BBC3 could be exchanged, but I don't see them doing a risk like that, no matter what the adverts say.

Lets be blunt, they don't know what to do with Family guy and American Dad, never mind anime.

Very True, they should have really given them the 6 slot or atleast something prime time. I even think they would get alot of viewers in the small hours of the morning.

That makes me cry, I've seen like 3 episodes in the past 4 months. ;_;

6pm slot?....can you imagine how much Family Guy would be cut if they did put it at that slot on BBC2?

I think DVD and manga sales are doing a lot better. But im the only girl fan at my school there a few boys that like it but most like it because they think its all henti.

And i carnt help but think that if uk tv starts to play anime it will all be aimed at male viewers. Anime needs more girl fans. There should be a anime channel that plays all genres.

And i still have to buy all my anime and mangas of amazon.

I think it has, but in all the wrong communities. At least with TV. I mean, cmon.. "Rockworld"? I stopped watching Cromartie High School because they kept talking about things like metal's relation to Satan worshipping at every ad break. Rapture seem like good people and I like what they're trying with their gaming and movie shows, but their core audience is still people who watch R Muzik, and because of that it's on almost 24/7. Jetix/Toonami don't help the impression that anime is for kids, although I can understand why they cut everything, the channels are supposed to be for kids..

Film 4 though, now that is a massive improvement, I wish they'd show something other than Ghibli/Miyazaki movies though.

The DVD release scene.. meh, it's still a matter of too little too late for the most part imo.. but it's still a marked improvement over what it used to be like...

Yeah, the UK Anime'/Manga industry has definitely grown. The state of play on UK TV might not be to every one's taste but at least it's there, hopefully with steady pressure and growing viewing figures things will improve.

For those that don't use/trust internet shops, the high street has never looked so good IMHO. Places like HMV, Virgin etc.. all have a reasonable amount of Anime' in stock and what they don't have is ordered easily enough. My local Boarders has a massive selection of Manga (about the same amount of space that the Star Wars books & European/American GN's has put together).

I'm kind of happy with the way things are looking, and it can only improve as long as we keep demanding quality stuff.

It is also worth noting that anime also commonly features in sales these days (and not just old school Manga Ent titles), whereas in the past surplus stock would have been sent back to suppliers. This shows a certain amount of confidence in stores that they can sell anime.

Anime and manga fans are increasing all the time ask any student about anime and I bet theyl know about it

Most of the animation students at Uni watch anime and read manga.

There should be a place in middlesbrough or any where infact where people who are fans of anime and manga can meet but the thing is not many people like to say that they like manga or anime they feel embaresed. Probably because they think there to old to watch cartoons
