I'm not really sure this is a justified statement to be honest. I guess you could argue that some of their more child friendly releases are thematically similar, though I've yet to see a Ghibli film that is truly similar to a Disney. Even Ponyo which is often criticized as being one of their more child friendly works, is a world away from Disney if you ask me. But look at Spirited away, easily Ghibli's most successful movie in the west, I don't think it's particularly thematically similar to a Disney film, and certainly not more so than a ton of other anime.
I think Ghibli's success in the west comes down to the undeniable quality of it's output (Earthsea not included) and the fact that someone like Miyazaki just does whatever he wants without pandering to the latest trends and obsessions of the rest of the anime industry, so while I don't agree that his films are thematically similar to Disney, I would say that they are more universal than much anime.
