UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

Eh. Modern anime fandom has pretty much reached the point where it's pretty much just people shitposting and using and abusing shows. IBO still has people tearing into it for its ending, because they misunderstandings where the story was going and expected a bunch of anime cliches instead.

That said, I still see IBO get respect.
I've mainly seen people praise it, which is a pleasant surprise after Age and G no Reconguista.

It mainly gets flack for season 2 where
McGillis' plan fails because it turns out he's just a crazed manchild who put too much stock in propaganda legends. A lot of people didn't pick up that the story was about throwing away good deeds by believing your own hype and so think season 2 just abandoned plot points when in reality it just bucks convention/Gundam formula and tries to be a bit more realistic in consequences.

Yeah IBO is a war drama like 0080 but it’s got giant robots so the realism I get it and respect but also it’s not why I watch Gundam, S2 I think is bad a for a lot of reasons especially the child raised by the two women WHAT? I mean it is an interesting solution to the love triangle but was weird both times I watched it
AGE Was a pleasant surprise yeah arc 1,3 and 4 are alright but arc 2 and memory of Eden are really good in regards to people’s opinion of it.

Assuming this is actually about more copies of the 4K CE going out, am I the only one that suspect this will attract the attention of even more resellers? I mean, the demand has already been established by the original print run selling out within 24 hours so I doubt they will think twice about hoarding copies.

Pretty much my concerns from my earlier post I made on the subject. If they do go for a second print run, that's great but there's always the chance it'll sell out fast. That being said, US folks did eventually get a GKIDS version so maybe it might ease up.

If it were through the AL webshop I wouldn't be worried as they could easily monitor whether or not someone buys like 10 copies or so if they wanted to but, as Jon O Fun rightfully pointed out a few pages back, zavvi most likely don't care if someone buys and resell their stuff at 150-200% the original price as long as that stuff is flying of their shelves. As I assume that any reprint still falls under that exclusivity deal and thus only be made available through zavvi, some resellers are sadly going to have another go at hoarding copies. That said, as you say, hopefully the US people don't feel the need to import now when they got their own version, so at least that probably won't suck up all that many new copies.

I just hope everyone that missed one last time will be able to get one now, preferably at a reasonable price.

Should it not have an adverse effect if there is more printed?
The hoarding and reselling mentality only works if the product amount is scarce and sought after. If the source makes sure the scarceness factor vanishes then there is no need to hoard, since the price you can get drops to new price of the source.
(Of course people might not notice and buy anyway, at which the 2nd hand market may get swamped with something below new price? 🤔 )

on the subject of gkids stuff, are their subtitles usually sloppy? i watched Fireworks at the weekend and was getting annoyed at the timing of the subs because a character would say 2 words and the subs would stay on for a while but then when it came to someone saying 10 words the subtitles would disappear as soon as they finished saying it in japanese despite it being a longer sentence in english

I figure it's all about how big this new potential reprint is and how big the demand is. Demand might be a bit hard to quantify but considering 1000 copies flew by with a few people missing out within 24 hours I dare say the demand is very high in terms of the anime market. So the question is all about how big the reprint will be. At 1000 new copies, we'll just have to see but considering that there is a concrete proof of how coveted this seem to be, I wouldn't be surprised if it attracted even more resellers this time around willing to take the potential risk you speak of anyhow. Though as you say, it might backfire on them if the reprint is big enough and demand is significantly lower this time around. The result could very well be that resellers will be sitting with multiple copies going into 2021.

In the end we'll see.

I can see them announcing a standard 4K UHD edition now the limited has sold out.

It'd be interesting to know the details of this exclusivity deal with Zavvi as I can imagine it had something to do with Zavvi's resources in replicating 4K blu rays and possibly covering x % of the cost.

no chance of that happening this soon, 4K UHD is 100% region free

Thought between meetings today I'd swing by and point out a few things on reprints etc:

1. Reselling (overall): If anyone is buying the 4K to resell, I'm unsure how they expect to make money on it. All the other parts are available elsewhere still on sale across the world for starters. Currently I count 6 copies on EBAY currently and if they're not selling now which is not even 1% of the stock sold on Zavvi so while it's wholly possible stock is lurking - I'm perhaps missing evidence of a mass reseller swooping in.

Either way - the extended print-run should dissaude from that and on our own site we'll obviously be monitoring for unusual quantities. We're of course keen to make sure anyone who wants to enjoy the film in 4K is able to without having to import so that's why there's an extended run now :). Don't worry - if you preorder from us, you will get your copy.

2. Why an exclusive on first run: We usually do exclusives with retailers when they have a specialist market built up for a type of product for a few reasons - one there's a built in audience and two they're usually keen to promote it. Zavvi have built themselves up over the years first for Steelbook and now for 4K as well so it was a logical choice. Nobody has ever sold an anime 4K in the UK before so we're all still learning what kind of demand makes sense (especially when it's a higher price than just a 4K BD on its own). It doesn't have anything to do with replication - Anime Limited always manages the production process, then retailers take, market and sell exclusives from there.

That was for the initial run though and we listened to feedback which is why for the variant edition we're also doing it on our website. Sadly we're out of our allocation of soundtracks and we simply wouldn't be able to refresh in time - but this was the best compromise we could come up with there.

3. Standard edition 4K release: Afraid I'd not hold out hope in a rush - if Japan hasn't done one, the odds of us being allowed to anytime soon are pretty slim (it's not unheard of for it to happen but for a title this big, it's unlikely).

Best,

Andrew
