UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

Criterion and MoC releases are collections, they are all individually numbered and people collect them because they're Criterion/MoC. The two companies have reputations for only acquiring the absolute best content. They have a cult following and in Criterion's case could basically release any old pap and people would buy it in droves.

As much as I will check out anything Anime Ltd. acquires, it's more because Andrew has good taste, rather than me liking every single title they acquire.

Just to throw my two pennies worth in since everyone else is; I'm fine with the AL spines, sure they look different to almost everything else on the shelf, but they're easy to read and understand exactly what they are just from looking at the spine. I appreciate the fact that they're pretty consistent too.

I mean sure, I know that Garden of Words is a film, but for someone who isn't me looking at the shelf for a film; they can see exactly what are films, and what aren't.

I do agree that my imports have prettier spines as they're not BBFC and publisher laden, but I do sometimes have a bit trouble if I didn't put them back on the shelf in order... Looking at you Garden of Sinners...

As someone who arranges their collection in alphabetical order rather than by distributor, as all sane people should, the uniformity of packaging design across AL's catalogue isn't terribly useful to me. Once, I gazed longingly at my shelves. Now all I see are various giant white As set against red or blue circles staring back at me, peering deep into my soul. Everything else fades into the background. It's rather disquieting.

Uniformity? Yeah, fine. That doesn't mean they have to be so busy. Way too much crammed into the meagre height of a Blu-ray spine. At least they're not as bad as Canal's Ghibli abominations, I suppose.

Yes, 'busy' describes them perfectly imo - especially given that alot of AL's collector's editions (e.g. DRRR, Blood Lad, Tiger and Bunny) have spines the width of a standard bd case (maybe a bit wider or thinner, I'm not sure). I do not think they're messy as someone said earlier but yes there can often be a lot going on

The rest of my anime collection is alphabetical, I keep the AL stuff separate though as if it's a mini collection :)

I see both sides of the argument, I understand that the uniformity is a great thing compared to our sordid history of inconsistent logo placement etc. However, I much prefer minimal/no logos whatsoever as I list all of mine alphabetically, and putting an AL box between two Funi boxes makes the AL one look inferior (to me) due to the business of the logos etc. I see it as I'm buying the show, not the opportunity to display a distributor's logo. That being said, I completely understand why it is there, and that it's a big step up from some other inconsistencies.

I like Funi's way of - tiny Funi logo + BR logo and not much else besides the show title.

I personally couldn't care less about packaging. It's the disc content that's most important to me.

I would fully agree with you there. I mean, I'll complain about cover art if I think it's bad or unrepresentative of the film (I'm looking at you The Apartment) and I certainly appreciate nice packaging (Arrow's Videodrome release was one) but I'd say it should take up as little of the budget as possible, so the discs themselves can be filled with extras - as well as perfect PQ/AQ for the main feature of course.

Does AL's shop take money on dispatch or when placing the order?

They've got a couple of pre-orders on their shop that are cheaper than Amazon, Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya & Ping Pong.

hit the nail on the head :) - well in terms of my opinion

Oooh, UK exclusive artbox to store both parts... I Like. Will definitely be nice if all sets going forward follow the spine set up with the "Gundam Collection" logo

Have Anime Limited exhausted their supply of KLK Part 3 boxes yet? Was that limited to 1000 as well? Different show and all that, but was just wondering. Some shows don't even shift 1000 units in their lifetime lol.

I wonder about that as well. I honestly hope that this Gundam release doesn't sell out because I'm now interested in this version than the US release heh (and I don't have the funds to get it right now, probably save it for Xmas).

I said a similar thing a few days back, Andrew's response:

Durarara!!'s LE was limited to 3000 copies, it's been out 18 months, has been insanely cheap for the past 3, doesn't really have to compete with the US release (it's an AoA release so was both expensive and limited) and is now the best release for English-speakers in the world. That still hasn't sold 3000 copies.

I think 1000 is a lot more copies than some of us realise...

1,000 sells pretty quickly for us really sometimes too though...really depends on the show! Example being Tokyo Ghoul Limited Edition will really be limited, I don't see it lasting in stock for super long (so would advise buying now).

Also DRR has been out 18 months and is almost out of stock on the LE so it's not lasted all that long when you consider the disc situation for it too really...

Haha yeah I was being a little facetious, Anime Limited have usually sold out of their limited edition allotments, from Bebop to Perfect Blue, no idea how much units were printed for either of them however and usually they drop down in price a lot before going the way of the dodo, but either way I have no doubt that they'll ship many copies of Gundam through its lifetime.

I guess its impossible to know how long they'll take to sell the first 1000 units, being a series that hasn't have much retail presence in the UK for a long time, I guess I was just interested in seeing how KLK 3 stood up as a general time-frame. For example, if AL announced that KLK 3 was reaching its final stretch through their social media channels, whats the threshold where they decide that its time to warn people and how long do the remaining units last? I have to assume that the box is a big selling point for people.

That Gundam box is beautiful. It will look wonderful with all the series in similar boxes too (hint - hint).

Can't wait to have it on my shelf.

It was not limited to 1,000 units and has already exceeded that ;).

As a side note, Gundam definitely is tracking to go beyond that lifetime number too - although true not all do :).
