UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

Just got an email from Amazon saying Cyborg has been pushed back a month? Anyone else get this? Wonder if AL have spotted an issue while doing their unboxing?

Yeah, please disregard any notification of 009 Re:Cyborg Limited Edition being delayed until October. We heard about this when we got into the office this morning and that was total news to us. Did some investigating, and we're getting it sorted now but it's definitely on track for 14th September :)

If we can now get minimal branding on the spine as well that would be awesoommmeee

Everybody puts their logo on the spine, at least AL use a uniform template that makes your shelves look nice. I don't want to see them abandoning that template, it took long enough for a UK distro to come along that kept things looking neat.

I don't really like the Uniform style - the blue/red(depending on whether its a film or series) and etc all on the spine takes away from the artwork and doesn't look nice on a shelf whereas i find with US sets, they make the title of the series or film the main thing and the only branding they add is a small logo at the bottom of the spine, rather than having 'blu-ray box 1' 'complete series' etc on it, making the title part of the spine smaller

Yeah I don't like the Anime Limited spines either. I remember Andrew saying that they did a lot of research when it came to that stuff beforehand, and I guess its a case of it being a market tested thing, made for dummies so they know what they're getting since all of the info is there, but it just comes across as messy.

Personally I love the spines and think the uniformity of them lined up on my shelf is probably one of my favourite things about them - it probably increases your chance of getting more too, as you don't want to end up missing one.

One thing that I think really boosts Anime Ltd's position in the market is the sense of them as an actual 'brand' with values - including design. So people aren't just buying their products for the show itself, like they might do with a Manga title, but they're buying into Anime Ltd too.

Which is an unhealthy way to go about things, but that's everyone's own prerogative I suppose.

Aesthetic taste is subjective, but something with a uniform standardised template design cannot be described as remotely "messy". You want messy, go back to the days MVM spines for different volumes of the same series didn't line up at all and Manga kept moving their logo and the DVD/Blu-ray logos all over the place.

I like the uniform spine design, my only complaint is that the spine seems to have changed recently, as Cowboy Bebop and Space Dandy #1's standard releases line up, but Durarara!!'s standard release doesn't...

It doesn't annoy me too much, as I sort alphabetically so they aren't together, but if they were together I would find it frustrating.

The only time I've been peeved at an Anime Limited spine is that the standard edition of Gurren Lagann says 1-27 instead of complete series like the others. Just because it doesn't have the movies doesn't make it not the complete series. Cowboy Bebop has Complete Series on the spine and that doesn't have the movie...

Yeah as one of the posters say, taste on the design of packaging and other things is subjective, i'm just giving my opinion and the reasons why i don't like the spines. I don't mind uniformity among series but not across a distributor's catalogue of titles as it feels i'm just getting a collection of AL titles rather than a box set specifically for series x or film y. Again, this is subjective and others in this thread have shown that they like the uniformity that AL presents with it's home releases

Having them all the same doesn't make them less messy *shrug* I wouldn't know about MVM and Manga because I pretty much import all of my **** and don't care for individual volumes, the UK market has always been terrible in this department in any case, but AL bother me more because the releases are going for the higher end of the market, but like I said, I'll just continue importing my stuff.

Aren't things like that more usual on the higher end of the market? I cast my eye over my Criterion and Masters of Cinema releases and they have spine numbers and a standard design
