UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

Kinda bummed out that the footage they shot at MCM didn't make it in. They filmed us doing the Zeon chant and said they'd be a montage on volume four of the various premiere audiences across the world doing it, including us.

Admit it feels a bit in bad taste given the past year but any word on what happened? Footage wasn't up to snuff?

EDIT- "Aw, the back of my head!" "What?!" "Sorry, not something you see everyday, back of your own head."

I love the running joke here that every time I've been in an MCM Gundam photo, you can never see my face :D

Looks like Anime Ltd are re-releasing Gurren Lagann as a collector's set next year in February according to this Zavvi listing
Gurren Lagann - TV Series and Movie Collection Blu-ray | Zavvi.com
It comes with a collector's booklet and slipcase. Looks nicer than the UE with a loose disk tray sat on my shelf :)
I am becoming increasingly displeased with how AL have handled Gurren Lagann. I have the UE, but now I'm stuck hoping for an early bird special for the CE because it looks so much better than the expensive UE.

You and me both. I think the UE is garbage and no where near worth what they charged for it tbh, and this looks soooooo much nicer, kinda miffed about it but truth is I'll likely try get rid of my crappy UE and buy this.

The Lagann UE might be a bit of a mess, but at the time it was an amazing alternative to the 64,800 Yen (£450) Japanese release. It's a highly regarded show that came with a lot of content and there simply wasn't many alternatives at the time. Of course, I think that the show itself is **** but that's a different story all together. If you're fans of the series, surely the fact that it's getting more mainstream releases that'll help it sell better and reach a larger audience should be a positive thing? I mean, it's been 2 years after all.

Personally as someone who bought the UE I felt it was a good start but had so many problems:
- The digipacks, while a cool idea, did not work for the size of the box and as such have expired over time. My digipack set has the cases falling out now, which is not good for the discs.
- The video quality is weaker than the other releases due to the damaged materials.
- The Japanese audio is apparently worse than the other releases. I don't know what happened there, I believe the Movies are lossy?
- The artbook was okay but could have been much better.

At the time I did pay £80 so it was a pretty decent deal at the time. But now that CE has better value, however it will still suffer from the same problems that the original had.

I would consider re-purchasing the CE if Anime Limited managed to get new materials that fix the damaged issue and audio (in other words - nearly matching the AoA sets in terms of on-disc content).

This should not be the opinion of everyone that bought the UE. AL definitely messed up here.

While I could be the exception that proves the rule, I'm not quite insane enough to buy the entire show for a third time just for different packaging and prefer the artbox (not the digipack) design of the UE >_>

Yeah i said i was tempted but chances are i cba lol. I actually really like the ultimate edition. It has its flaw (disc trays, digipack too thin) but it's still a great looking set IMO.

The day i got it, two of my non anime fan mates came round and they saw it and they were blown away by it.

Firstly a Merry Christmas to one and all! I hope Anime-Santa has been good to you all there :)!

Quick note on all counts without singling anyone's comments out alone since I'm procrastinating from going to the gym here ;):
  • CE rationale - Is a timed exclusive to Zavvi, it will unlock after that and we'll look at what we can do but the whole goal from it was to attract a wider audience into Gurren Lagann who may have missed it in our last real push (Zavvi would you believe do a pretty good job of this target).
  • "Anime Limited have messed up" theory - Keep in mind when we released GL originally the artwork you are seeing on the slipcase was not made available to us for our box, in fact we were explicitly not allowed to use it. We'd have loved to have it then so we felt two years later it was something we wanted to do. Aka we wanted to make something nice but nobody is forcing anyone to buy it obviously!
  • Video points - If that were possible, we would, but this was done in the early days of AL at a studio who long since will have deleted the masters so to fix the selection of very small points we'd have to spend a lot to do it even via our friends at MediaOCD. This would mean a real price hike to cover the cost as the expectation on unit sales would not be high enough to justify the upfront. Where we can, we do go back to fix issues of course though always and strive to do as well as we can, just sometimes we can't I'm afraid. The majority of the set barring a couple of seconds overall are great quality though and audio-wise I've at least never noticed any issues (but then again, I'm a stone age person with a 2.0 setup).
Retrospectively I have said it a hundred times, the Gurren UE was our first effort in really unique packaging and we learned a lot from it. If we could go back now with what we've learned and do-over would we? Definitely. But sadly we can't and we just continue to iterate onwards really and doing a CE now is just us making good use of the property in our catalog to do something nice to hook in a new audience ideally.

Either way, nobodies noses were meant to be put out of joint and after 2 years, I don't think it's hyper-unfair to let us do something else with it if we've new materials unavailable before (aka the packaging artwork for the case for example).

Hope this clarifies and folks have a great day today! I'm going to go relax anyway now (after the gym anyway...)

Best,

Andrew
