UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

Excited by the prospect of Anime Limited distributing imports, I was always jealous of sites in the US that did that.

While amazon.jp is often fast and easy to use, it doesn't always stock the more interesting editions of stuff.

Also, having never touched Gundam ever (there's just so much of it... I'm never sure where to start). Is this a good jumping off point?

Going by what I've read of the manga version, I'd say yes - very much so - after all, the Origin kinda does what it says on the tin, it is the 'original' Gundam in terms of the characters/story it tells. Though by that same extension it's also quite old-school, in terms of art/style, general feel and tone.

On the other hand, you've Wing - which is so 90s, but very brutal/dark in a lot of senses, and my personal favourite - SEED - which is glossy and colourful in a very early 00s sort of way, focuses more on its relationships/female characters in my opinion.

Ah right, thanks a lot for that! I didn't want to get too presumptuous with the "Origin" bit just in case!

I really dig the old-school feel, and you can (mostly) never go wrong with giant robots, so I'll give it a try.

AWRIGHT! Anime Limited get in on the Gundam! This pleases me.

The price, and the item as listed, though... does not. Were squarely in the realm of 'were I a rich man, I'd pay it gladly.' But I'm not, so I can't. Natch. So I'm watching for standard edition release news like a hawk, now.

Really very excited to see what happens with Anime Limited and Bandai in future, though - especially if it equates to home video releases of Gundam shows. These are shows that people WILL want to own in physical format, and there's a market for it outside of 'regular' anime fan circles, if my Facebook interactions are anything to go by.

There's a case to be argued that Gundam is the show most in need of rescuing right now - it's one of the most well known anime properties ever, but as it stands there isn't a single DVD/BR in print right now in the UK of the show. That needs to be rectified ASAP.

AGREED!

It's also a case, I think, where price point needs to be very keenly judged. I've said it before on this board, and I'll say it again - I think this franchise could be a REALLY big thing over here if it's promoted and marketed adequately to suit.

Andrew may not appreciate me saying this (especially as I know full well how his hands may be tied on the matter) but it strikes me that expensive LE sets for this show are NOT the way to go. Lots of folks have remarked to me in the past how they've wanted to check out a Gundam show, but the asking prices put them off. So there's that.

EDIT: It just occurred to me that, given the 'export edition' status of this release, it's a bit churlish to complain too loudly about pricing. More stuff to bear in mind for a localised release, I think.

I'd love to own this, but my only worry is that there's no way I'd have the money in time to meet the pre-order deadline (curse you amiibo pre-orders!).

Also as this is an import release, I'm curious as to how Anime Limited will be handling the BBFC? Will this global release be submitted to the BBFC, or will they be using their French arm cleverly dodge the issue?

And then there's the obvious...could this lead to Anime Limited distributing future Aniplex import releases too?

Two Words - Clannad BluRays. People would go mental (I hope)
If I remember correctly, Jerome was quite vocal about how much of a flop Clannad's DVD release was.

From what i've read it'll be shipped straight from Japan (hence why AL said they'd deal with the customs) so no need for BBFC. Its like if you were getting a dvd/BD from an online store like CDJapan but instead you're just going through AL instead.

If they're planning a basic version next year too, they may as well get it certified by the BBFC at some point though. So there's that possibility.

The price point for a store-exclusive LE deluxe set is never going to be lower outside Japan, because the entire funding model relies on it holding its value. OAV production is basically crowdfunding without any kind of safety net for the creators - that's why so many get cancelled partway and why the OAV model mostly died out in the 90s. Gundam is a safe bet, however :D

It's LE or nothing for Origin in the west at this point, and I'm fine with that. Without this worldwide release we'd be waiting until 2016 (or beyond) for an international release anyway, and if people want to do that then it's absolutely cool.

It's interesting they made the English dub from the start with this one - and it seems quite clear the show has been made with an international release strategy built in. I'm personally not the biggest fan of deluxe-or-nothing release strategies, but I do like the attitude that this is a 'worldwide' release - it ties in with the global audience Gundam has and as others have mentioned, even if people don't buy this release straight away, hopefully the talk around it gets more people interested in and consuming Gundam in its many shapes and forms.

Finally got round to opening the Blood Lad set, wow this is a nice release. You seem to have hit the nail on the head when it comes to the CE packaging quality now, with Kill la Kill, Space Dandy and now this all being awesome.

The book is fantastic, very glad Viz allowed you to reproduce it!

Base.com and Zavvi have finally updated their Kill La Kill part 2 prices to add their discount, coming in £3.26 cheaper than Amazon at present for the blu ray. I've submitted a couple of price updates to Amazon, we'll see how things move in the next day or so :)

I generally stick to Amazon these days - just for convenience and peace of mind; they always seem to go down to match by release date at the latest.

Glad you like it! (And I agree, the book is nice compliment to the set :) )

Yes that's generally true, though I do wish they'd update sooner, I'd rather know they'd updated the price before they charged me rather than get a refund a week later because they dropped it in the last 6 hours prior to release. I guess they do it that way to prevent an all out price war.

These new discs will be using the exact same video and audio assets. (We were very happy with video and audio quality originally so we want to retain the same high standard there.)
The Audio/Video materials used on the AU/UK discs seem to be exactly the same ones from the US/JP release - just with the Japanese audio commentaries on each episode removed. Not very often that happens.
If everything goes to plan then this could see AniplexUSA's release being bested by one in another English speaking territory.

One question regarding Durarara!!, will the new release also get a new EAN code ?

The eventual standard Blu-ray and DVD collections we'll release will have different barcodes, yes. There won't be a reissue/re-release of the Collector's Edition so that code will not change.
