UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

I'm guessing this question is a bit premature and will be answered in due-time, but I thought that it might be worth a shot anyways. With Mai Mai Miracle, are you targeting a set similar in size to Patema or KLK? I backed the CE. I don't mind either way, I've discussed previously my preference for the KLK size over the other but I'm just genuinely interested in this instance. I'm guessing it's going to be KLK sized due to it not coming with a book and such and I'm guessing a digipack is coming with the CE due to the previous tiers specifying that they come with an amaray? Again, happy either way, I look forward to getting it when you're all done :) As a side note, can't wait for my LE LWA2 as well, would be funny if they both come around the same time :p

Hey hey - will be similar size to KLK as the artbook ships separately on this one :)!

I had actually forgotten about Mai Mai Miracle even happening, despite backing the $130 tier... Well, to quote Anime Limited's top tips for Valentine's Day: "Delays happen, don't sweat it".

Hopefully the update that we're supposed to get next week, barring any delays of course, will have some info on when it will start shipping!

It'd be neat if you could include how the Collector's Editions + art books will be sent out, in proper boxes with bubblewrap or other materials, or if it will be basic mailers. Any info on that part would be appreciated.

Thanks for the prompt reply as always! Look forward to hearing more about it next week if I remember the newswire correctly :p You've got a lot on your plate with a lot of awesome releases coming up throughout this year but I hope your experience with Kickstarter has been a positive and enlightening one and that you consider this method of getting things out there in the future with IP you might not feel feasible to just release on the market. Hopefully it allows for releases we might not otherwise see, in a package that does it justice for people who are interested.

To be fair - dubbing is commencing on the project and we've got the sub script being reworked by none other than Katabuchi-san himself to ensure the points he wants across are there so the project is advancing :). Downside of working on older projects though - they can get bogged down quite quickly especially when dubbing!

Updates will follow in due course as per normal so fear not there :3. Re shipping - not yet started shipping but likely for the DVD sets in the UK will use Amazon-esque packaging and for the artbooks similar depending on where they're going :).

US-side is in the hands of Righstuf when it comes around :). Hope this helps!

Yo man I am In a nightclub when I type this! Are you interested in bringing mai hime/otome? Did mai hime sell well when it was a beez title?

I salute your dedication to questions - it merits an answer then too! Looking at them definitely given their current BD status - nothing concrete to update as sales were always middle of road alas and have a few other Sunrise items higher on my agenda ;) . Will get to that though!

I don't know much about the industry itself, what company has what rights and all so there's a big chance of me making a fool of myself with this post, but I know Beez is not around anymore, and I don't know if anybody picked up the rights for Eureka Seven, but if they're available, would you be interested in picking them up for a BD release? I love that show, I have the Beez DVDs, but a Anime Limited-quality BD release of Eureka Seven? It would be pre-ordered, no question about it! It's one of the shows that deserve double dipping IMO.

Edit: And I do mean the original Eureka Seven, not AO. I like to pretend that one doesn't exist :p

Since you don't seem oppose to answering questions here, thought I'd try my luck.

Not overly familiar with anime as a business, but how viable are sub only series releases in the UK? (MVM seem to be having some success with the Monogatari series, but as I understand it already has quite a following).

Reason I ask is; I quite enjoyed Samurai Flamenco, but I get the impression US license holders Aniplex perhaps didn't. Hence I'm starting to doubt it'll receive a dub. (My understanding could be way off here anyway, as I don't know if you're even entitled to those assets if they produce them?).

Anyway, I quite like the idea of owning it on Blu-ray, but obviously if such a release wasn't viable I'd stop holding out any kind of hope (I realise it's available on Netflix, you have my thanks for that!). You've probably got your work cut out with more popular releases too thinking about it!

They appear to be a lot more viable than they were a few years ago, as previously it was a case of no dub = no release. Dubbing a series certainly increases the potential audience as many people won't buy a show without one.

Pretty sure Andrew said he'll be doing a sub only BD for Samurai Flamenco. I'm 99% sure it won't get a dub as the series didn't seem to be all that popular, and actually bombed when it came to home video sales in Japan. (It did about as badly as Deadman Wonderland and Coppelion - so ~200-300 units per volume.) I'd imagine that AniplexUSA are either hesitant to release it due to awful sales in Japan, or they are not allowed to at the moment as a result of that. It's starting to get released outside of Japan now though, with volumes coming out in Germany.

Likely sub-only - we had a weird update from Madman saying they were waiting on a dub (reported by Fandompost) so we're checking that before I commit but tentatively looking at May/June release over two box sets I suspect (France was told they could only do two anyway, I'd rather do complete sets though on this one so shall ask AoA).

Thanks for the info! Really appreciate it!

I did a little Googling before I made the post, and only managed to find as you said, Samurai Flamenco appeared to bomb in Japan. So I can totally see why other companies would be hesitant to put it out. Which is a shame, as I loved it (maybe I just have bad taste or something!).

Little more hopeful now you've pointed out Andrew was thinking about it, and that there was a release in Germany.

Personally, while the choice of an English dub is nice, it's never really the defining factor for me when picking up a series. Though I can see how it probably would be for other people. I'd be interested to see what the split is for people who buy anime in a physical format (without opening the whole dub vs sub can of worms).

Edit: Just saw Andrew's response after typing this out. Thanks for the update! I'd be overjoyed with any kind of release, though a complete set does sound like a more attractive proposition.

I'd buy both (and lots of other Sunrise classics) on BD! :D

Also I wish all the Ultimate Editions would be like MMM and have the artbook separately and KlK style box (as I said in another thread) haha :)

It's funny as I'm the other side of that coin and I'd be far less likely to buy a ultimate edition if the art book didn't fit in the box, not sure why because as much as I enjoy art books, I flip through them once and never look again.

Hi Andrew! I have a rather peculiar question that I was wondering if you knew an answer to?

Last week, Hasbro announced that they had signed an agreement to release merchandise based on Yo-Kai Watch in 2016, which fits with comments made by Level-5's president about how the company plans to launch the franchise overseas this year (likely starting with the Nintendo 3DS games). Considering that Yo-Kai Watch's success in Japan is largely attributed to the TV anime series however, I was wondering if you've heard anything in regards to plans for an English-language localisation/release?

(Also, how likely do you think it would be for a company like Anime Limited to grab the license for Yo-Kai Watch? Or due to the nature of the beast, do you think the licensors might be wanting to court a more "mainstream" distributor?).

Personally I love Yo-Kai Watch (it's super weird, there's a lecherous cat and more) - but ultimately to make the show work in the west for families any distributor is going to need to at best Pokemon-ify it (localise out some issues) and in the word absolutely 4KIDS it to sell. I'm not ready for a reputation of villainy for that kind of reason just yet!

Just throwing it out there, if no one else picks up Barakamon & Monthly Girls Nozaki Kun I would very much appreciate you guys doing so. MVM or Animatsu might get em (Barakamon - Funimation & Nozaki - Sentai) but if not, it'd be neat if you could ;) Just sayin and all ...

Also, have you ever considered throwing out surveys for shows people would like? for example, making one once a season has finished airing & seeing what titles garner the most interest? I've always felt that would be a neat idea.

Edit: Amgai Brilliant Park would be nice too ..but I do feel that's gonna go the way of Hyouka :(

I'd definitely buy Nozaki Kun in a heartbeat.

I've said this before, but worth saying again, if anyone wants to rescue Haruhi for a lovely Season 1 + 2 Blu-Ray re-pack, I'd be there in an instant.

Also, Excel Saga - make it happen.
