UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

I was a little confused by Andrew's comments about Turn A Gundam as they seemed to potentially suggest they had it and were considering if they could release it on Blu Ray as that would suit the UK market more than DVD.

So was I, hence the comment about that bit being a bit crap.

I believe Anime Ltd.'s distribution deal covers the entirety (or at least most) of the Gundam franchise, like RightStuf/Nozomi's, and Turn A is a title that Andrew has apparently been hinting at for a while. Apparently he was making jokes about "Turning" at the last MCM event, whenever that was.

@Buzz201 Many thanks for the writeup (assuming it's yours!), really appreciate it!

It's mine. I should take the blame for the multiple screw-ups that will probably become visible.

If they did do BRs for Turn A that'd be a bit of a coup considering the U.S. didn't get them. I'd be tempted to say for the UK market, sub only BRs would definitely be better, as it seemed like MVMs Patlabor release a few months back tanked because it was DVD only, and anyone planning on buying that title anyway would have only wanted the highest quality.

I think anime tends to be slightly more niche in the UK, so the people that watch tend to prefer subtitles. I also think the UK is slightly more used to watching foreign content with subtitles, so the lack of a dub for Turn A is probably less of an issue.

Oh my god. Why did they have to mention Natsume's Book of Friends! I was resigned to that never getting released in the UK, but now I'll (foolishly) hope they license it.

Never say never for Natsume, it's a great show but it just needs some thought on how to release it :).

Re Turn A - we're not going to break pattern vs what the USA does on it, causes way too much friction and as it's a partnership with Sunrise we want to ensure consistency in the west on that frontier. What we meant was we were considering one big set though for it in a nice box though :). More on that soon!

Interesting, thanks for the info - good to hear there might be something on the way as I was vaguely considering importing the US sets, but will definitely hold off if there's a domestic release coming. Think I was just confused as to whether *all* the Right Stuff Gundam sets would be coming out here or if we were just getting some of them.

I'd agree though, my preference would definitely be for one big Turn A set with all the eps (and the movies included too?) - but either way I'll be buying it.

Very true. As soon as MVM announced it was DVD-only I imported the US set instead.

Turn-A, I'll stick with AL even if it's DVDs. My understanding is that the RS release PQ is very nice anyway so I'd imagine AL's would be exactly the same, but with the bonus of better packaging. The only alternative is the Japanese BDs which a) are massively expensive and b) not English-friendly, meaning you're adding your own subs in anyway.

The replacement scheme for Kill la Kill will be coming soon, but Jeremy would like people to wait a week before contacting him, due to MCM Glasgow.

Replacement scheme for Kill la Kill, did i miss something somewhere as i'm not aware of problems with it. Can someone enlighten me.

A lot of people including myself picked up the first part at MCM London October and we noticed there was an issue with one of the episodes so they delayed the set by a month to fix it.

Patlabor "tanked" pretty much from ova 1 - we knew sales weren't going to be great on ova 2 [even more so as ova 2 is a sequel to the tv series, not ova 1]. Hence why there was no BD either here or Australia - it "tanked" over there too.

It's a shame to hear that - for what it's worth, I bought the Blu-Ray of the first set and the DVD of the second set as I wanted to support the domestic release anyway. But looking at what happened has made me pretty skeptical about more 'retro' anime getting much support in the UK in the near future (special cases like Anime Ltd's Gundam releases aside)

It's frustrating because it seems to be the one area where the US really seems to have a market for that stuff when the UK doesn't, just because of the smaller population demographic.

There's some incredible pre-00s anime out there, and it makes me sad to think that a lot of it will never get a UK release simply because enough people won't buy it.

Ah this i knew about, but i thought this was already settled with all who bought KlK at MCM London

Mai Mai Miracle Update!

[spoilerbutton]September Update: Dub Excitement!

Well, it's been a very long time since the last update: I've been home on holiday and back at work for a while now, so apologies for the delay but trust me - it's all good news! So let's get into it shall we?

The Dub
Ho boy! Well, the dub is coming along GREAT! There was a bit of a delay with the dub due to working with kids which knocked us about 2 weeks off our schedule. However, this morning we received a first round of mixing for the dub (called a bounce) and it sounds really great. We are super pleased with the result.

NYAVPost are now working on finalising the mix, so there's still a bit more work to be done there, but the biggest chunk of work is over and sounding really solid.

As something special for this Kickstarter, the good people at NYAV Post have sent over a couple videos of the girls voicing Shinko and Kiiko talking about the movie and their experiences voicing the characters.

*Videos are on the Kickstarter page and I don't think they can be embedded here, the update is also for backers only*

Packaging and Artbook
We were hoping to have some pretty pictures of the packaging up for you guys by now, but we've needed to make some changes and are still in the approval process so hopefully should have something for you by next update! Once we've got sign off on the packaging though, we'll put them up here ASAP.

The artbook is coming along but definitely still a work in progress. I mentioned in the previous update that we've gotten the notes from the director for each page and instructions on how it's to be laid out. Currently the notes are being translated but once this is done, we'll be moving along with this.

Digital version of the film
Last week, we took down the digital version of the film to fix some of the issues many of you noticed with the timings/synch. This has been fixed and re-uploaded and I'll be sending out the link in a DM via the Kickstarter platform after I post this update!

Other Rewards
These are pretty much ongoing, work in progress. What we'll end up doing for this is sending out all the rewards with the final product all at the same time. So you'll have everything in the one go.

It has been a long time coming, and this project has been a constant in our lives for the past year and a half. But the finish line is in sight and we're nearly there! Thank you all so much for your patience and support and I hope you enjoy the videos included in this update. Hopefully by the next update I'll be able to include a clip of the dub within the context of the film to give you guys a feel of how it'll all come together.
Until then, thanks and have a great rest of the week!

I'll have to start saving up for all those copies of Natsume Yujin Cho. It would be great if AL could find a way to release it, though I suppose it would be tough. I guess a Kickstarter or something wouldn't really be possible (I'm not sure if AL would want to do that anyway).

On a related note, I forget if Mai Mai Miracle has been confirmed to be getting a release for non-Kickstarter backers. I can't see why it wouldn't really, I suppose they could at least sell some copies through their own store.

A Sound! Euphonium release would be good. I may be the only one but I wouldn't mind getting Denki-gai as well.

I hope the Nerima Daikon Brothers release works out, it's been on my list for a while now.

It would be nice for Natsume Yuujinchou to get a UK release but i wouldn't double dip as i already own the NISA premium editions for all 4 seasons and they are lovely.

People seem to be reading into the Sound! Euphomium answer a little too much given Andrew's response on the podcast said nothing other than; if they want it, they might or might not be able to get it, and that might be sub-licensed from PonyCanUSA or it might not. Most of the answer was about PonyCanUSA titles generally.
