Anime Central to be taken off the air!

Was on Wiki when I first read about Anime Central ending. OFcom (Television Liscencing) show that as of an update of May 2008 Anime Central will be replaced with True Entertainment sometime later this year. I've looked hard about this channel (True Entertainment) but all I could find out is that it will be a cartoon channel with possible anime appearances, it looks to be mainly your common cartoon channel (like Jetix). I can't garuntee that as fact like coz I can't find the page on the CSC Media Group (Licensee of AC). The Licence Service Name Changes on OFcom is solid enough though.

I guess it was only a matter of time. Theres only so much Cowboy Bebop and SAC the UK can take.

I think all things considering, i'm surprised the channel didn't dissapear a couple of weeks after it switched to the bebop/ ghost combo. Just have to see what this new channel is like when it comes on though i've got a nasty feeling that if there is an anime block on it, its going to be bebop and ghost in the shell all over again :roll:

It may has not been airing for a long time now. I love SOC and CBebop like, obviouse not enough however, to watch them repeatedly for (how many months now?)... ah well.
 
I'll bet anyone that the first show that True entertainment will announce will be GI Joe!

I got this funny feeling that they will air 80s and early 90s cartoons.

But then who knows every show might be an anime!

From what I've gathered in other forums and sites, it's not looking to hopefull that it'll be another anime channel. Me thinks we'll get naruto/ transformers or maybe even bleach at best. That's also highly unlikely. I reccon it'll be more like Jakie Chan and X-men. Nothing solid yet like.

It could be a mixture.

By not classing it as a pure anime channel, they could get away with showing a more eclectic mix of genre.
 
An anime channel will never work in the UK. There just isn't enough commitment inthis country to show that animation is not just limited to kids entertainment and can be just as mature as any live action show we have on TV. That's probably never going to happen and we should probably stop trying for a dedicated anime channel. An anime slot once a week on a relativly popular channel and a series that can appeal to a wide audience has more chance of taking off but lets face it that's not going to happen because of the idea the general TV watching public has about japanese animation. That's who anime on TV is for, not the fans of the shows.
 
What Sy says is sad but true. We even lost Anime Network and that seemed more like a sensible idea to having an anime based channel. Plus it definately had more veriaty in it's 2hr showing time to AC 9hr repeat. I just wish there was more anime on in general, Film 4 get the Ghibli on the go from time to time but other than that we're looking at Naruto, Bobbobobbob etc On the Kids channels.
 
It seems like any idea to show anime on a channel is doomed from the outset........ I'm still holding firm the idea that we have to wait for Animax to come over here.

I have a feeling it might be happening sooner or later, now, seeing as Freesat just got launced... and Sony were looking for a similar kind of way to broadcast, i.e free to air, I think. I'm not certain about any of this, though.

An they wonder why the UK downloads so much of it. If Animax does make it over here I hope that it can succeed unlike it's predicessors. I can't understand how when looking on the net and from what I hear, the UK has a large anime fanbase but still we struggle to get the accessabilty we crave threw basic channels. There will be time when this will all change I'm sure.
 
Anime on TV isn't going to work here for a long time, if ever. For a start, anime fans are too accustomed to DVD collecting as their primary means of getting anime - and the channels (which undoubtedly have a very low budget, and therefore can't buy many series) either have to air only one night a week (which isn't enough), or air new episodes daily and punish any viewers who can't give the channel three hours of their life every day (everyone).

But I await the next attempt. They're not going to stop trying for a while.
 
i'm telling you, the best way for anime to come out here is some sort of time slot exposure on another channel (which i feel is what is going to happen on True Entertainment) like they do in the US with Adult Swim. Sure Bravo's given it a quick shot with Afro Samurai, but if it's adult swim brand got a few more anime licences (even if it just plays them at the weekends) i think it would do alright, specially with bravo being a freeview channel
 
I don't think Anime Central was helped by the fact that it only ever started broadcasting from 9pm.
Having a daytime slot, from say, 12pm, may have given them a wider 'hit zone'.
You could have the kiddy stuff at first then move on to the more mature shows around 5 or 6, when people are arriving home from work.

In all honesty, who's going to sit up past 12 at night watching tele? (Apart from the pervs who watch porn). :evil:

I watch TV past 12 regularly... There are a hell of a lot of repeats on from earlier in the evening that I didn't see at that time. Plus I have a habit of watching BBC News 24 for a loooooong time.

I used to do that until I decided I don't give the slightest toss what happens in the world anymore. :)

Anime Central was a sattelite channel I take it? I don't have sattelite so I never watched it anyway - I'd rather spend the subscription money on dvd's.
 
AC was actually free to air, you do not need a sky subscription to watch it, just a dish and a receiver. Even before Sky launched their 'freesat' service you've been able to get the very same channels (and more) for free. Freesat is a total con just to get money out of people.

Sony have always said Animax will not be free to air.

Unless Animax do something really special, and especially given that they want it to be a pay channel, I can't see the leechers moving away from their PC screens. There will always be something wrong, be it subs, dubs, timing, series, access to TV etc.. that means they won't watch. The fact of life is a TV channel will never be able to keep up with fansubs.

True Entertainment is most likely to be a mix of cartoons, some anime and some kung-fu/godzilla type films. I forsee AC continuing on True Ent with yet more ghostboy shellbop repeats ;)

Not really. The main aim of the BBC/ITV's Freesat was to get HD channels to be free, instead of having to pay for them on Sky.... Becuase they can't get the bandwith for it on Freeview.

Let's not be picky here, I know it says Freeview, but I wasn't specifically talking about free-to-air either.

It just launced in Germany late June on a subscription-based TV service (whether this means like Sky, or VOD remains to be seen).

The term satellite can be very broad, from being free-to-air, but able to be received by a satellite only... To actually being part of a satellite package, ala Sky... to who knows what. Their intentions are to show on Freeview eventually.
 
You can get the free HD channels via satellite without 'freesat'. You can already buy FTA HD receivers and FTA HD PVRs. What you do get with your payment to sky for 'freesat' is the sky EPG.

There are payfor channels on freeview, Setanta and TopUp TV being the current ones.
