I for one see cosplay as basicly another genre of fancy dress (which it is). It's all good fun in the right situations. People can dress up if they want to. I've done dressed up before and I'm sure most have you have in the past too.
Who cares!! People can stereotype if they want. I don't care coz I know who I am and what I like. ¬_¬

Dude cosplaying is about expressing your love for a character, its about dressing up as them in an omage, its about putting your effort into creating an outfit, yes some buy the outfits too I myself buy them in parts and then put them together mainly because I have zero sewing skill.
If you are calling it crap then call it crap but try not to slag us cosplayers off so much, you hate it when people call anime 'cartoons' or 'kids' tv right well now your acting like one of them.
I try to pic cosplays that suit my body type hense the Bass outfit XnickX mentioned but sometimes, infact most of the time, no one will match my body type I don't consider myself fat but I am big and don't measure up to the 6ft height that seems to work well, but when I dress up as a new character i feel like that character its like gaining there spirit, and I know this is a concept lost on non-cosplayers but I have tried to explain it as best as possible.
Oh and as for the 10st overweight black guy yes he made a bad choice, maybe he should have dressed up as Bucca from Airgear instead but hey he was having a good time and thats all that matters.
I hope I don't get any negative feedback on what I have written as I have made it as honest as possible. I know quite a few people who cosplay, some put lots of effort in and get good results, some... just get the first part down . But they've all been fun guys and girls to hang out with, so I'm not sure exactly where all the negativity is coming from...

Cosplay is all good and well when it's at conventions or on the internet, but shoving it in our faces on what's otherwise a respectable channel is not right. Cosplay, even on that rare occasion when somone from the UK pulls it off, is still the epitome of absolute geekdom. People will be turned off of anime if they see cosplayers on TV, of that I'm sure.
Why not spend this money on interviewing some of the people from Sweatdrop studios, or attending a con or on an anime news program instead?

Ice Climber, whether you like it or not cosplaying is a niche within a niche. Sure it's fun for the people actually cosplaying but to other people, even a lot of people who watch anime, it is seen as a very 'nerdy' thing to do. It's not exactly a respected element of the fanbase (as demonstrated in this topic).
Like others have said if they want to expand their scope then that's great, I'm all for it. For example Nargis Ahmad(Manga Girls) managed to get an exclusive interview with Johnny Yong Bosch for this site, I can't see why they couldn't manage to do they same thing. It would be a lot more watchable.

I have to say reading all these posts I kinda feel a bit persecuted, this post was started to let cosplayes know about a tv show aimed at them and turned into a place to have insults thrown at us and our hobby (comments like we treat it like Halloween, no halloween is tacky.... 95% of us suck at it, maybe but we smile when we do it cause we love it). Yes you have seen the bad outfits, lets face it tv shows in this country are more likely to show that as its 'funny' and makes people feel at ease because taking the piss is far easier than giving something a chance. And as for Youtube, come on that was made to bully a place we can all go to laugh at annonymous people.
Look can we kinda move away from the negative sides of it, cause it really gets on my nerves when people who haven;t tried and won't give it a try pass judgement, don't you all hate it when people mock you for watching cartoon porn... sorry anime and ready dirty comics... sorry manga.

- 'Is spotlighting cosplaying on TV a good idea?'
- 'Since this is a TV channel aimed at a wider scope of an audience than pre-existing fans of the shows could the sight of cosplayers put potential viewers off?'
- 'Could this kill chances of the channel/medium being taken seriously?'
- 'Would it even make a difference at all?'
And so on.

- 'Since this is a TV channel aimed at a wider scope of an audience than pre-existing fans of the shows could the sight of cosplayers put potential viewers off?'

They will think that anime is not to be taken seriously when they see ridiculous cosplay on TV, and I can't blame them. What if I want to convince my friends that anime is worthwhile, and is mature entertainment and I point them in the direction of Anime Central and they see cosplay? It's just not going to be good - the truth is, that even I cringe when I see cosplay and I've been an anime fan for about 2 years now.
