Anime at the cinema

HAIKYU!! The Dumpster Battle (Gekijōban Haikyu!! Gomi Suteba no Kessen), the first film in the two-part Haikyu!! Final sequel film project, will be screened in U.K. cinemas on May 31.

SLA will be 1-10 November this year. Hopefully will be able to make it!!
I better get some time off sorted out. One thing I noticed is that they only listed the combined dates, and haven't included the dates for each location like they did before. I wonder if the dates are split like before, or if the event is now concurrent between the two locations.

I’ll definitely try and go again this year. Not sure if I’d rather go to Glasgow or Edinburgh though. Might wait until I see the lineup first.

Saw Spy x Family: Code White tonight in IMAX, I took my mother to see it since she's such a huge fan of the series. It was just OK for me, about on par with the series, although a bit more over the top. I will just say one thing about the movie:

"I am the Poop God!"

Anybody else keen to go to Scotland Loves Anime again this year? I'm planning to go with my son, my daughter, and her boyfriend, so that should be fun.
I'm not sure when the lineup gets announced, but I'm thinking of booking the train and hotel sooner rather than later.
Looks like I'll probably go to Glasgow this time as accommodation is cheaper, and it will probably work out better for me in terms of work schedule.
Does anyone have educated guesses as to what this year's films might be?

Considering Crunchyroll made no mention of a UK release while announcing it for North America and Australia I'd say there's a good chance of the Overlord movie appearing. This movie is set in the middle of season 4, just to make everything awkward.

I’d be up for both Overlord and Look Back - I’ve read the source materials for both.
A Silent Voice was great, so I’d be up for seeing anything else that director has done.

In terms of new films, I am thinking that The Colors Within and City Hunter: Angel Dust seem like strong contenders, because of their licensing.

after those 2, Ghost Cat Anzu, Look Back and Trapezium are in the next group of possbilities, seemingly less complications.

There are a number of others, including a lot of smaller films, but just not sure about the bigger names this year, such as the likes of Kizumonogatari -Koyomi Vamp- (Sony rated here for cinema), Mononoke Movie 1 (Netflix tied) and Fureru (I think this might be Netflix tied too, but no solid evidence of it at the moment). It is a film festival so its not as hardline about that stuff, but still, relevant to keep in mind, plus some holdovers here from last year too.

Debating about going to Edinburgh, but really it comes down to how the films are spread about over the days, even if The Colors Within is something I want to see, I am ok waiting for general release, based on some info that GKIDS has mentioned already that will hopefully be carried over by AL.

My Hero Academia: You're Next is coming to UK cinemas October 11th.

I already have that day and the next booked off for Sparking Zero and Daima so at least I won't have to miss this... unlike Dandadan unfortunately.

Also, are listings up for the Detective Conan movie yet as there're none in my area but I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't get it near here.

The text and image show different dates, which feels unnecessarily confusing! I'm guessing that someone at Sony made a typo and it's still on for the 18th.

We've had the 18th October from Crunchyroll for MHA today but no further details yet apart from a poster image and brief synopsis.

I saw Dan Da Dan at the weekend. I went in knowing precisely nothing about it. No trailers, no spoilers, nothing. I often try to do that when I see a new movie, so I can be surprised and judge it purely on my own terms and its own terms before I see what anyone else has said.

So imagine how Extremely Extremely Confused I was when the film starts with a 10-ish minute set of interviews about the film with the cast and crew BEFORE the film starts, some of which contained light spoilers. Very disappointing - it removed the surprise when those pieces came up in the story.

I was so confused that I even left the cinema briefly to ask the staff whether there'd been a mistake at the projector. They said that two separate people asked the same question the day before, lol. I just looked down at the floor for the rest of the interviews. I'd like to see the interviews now that I've actually watched the film. Hopefully I can find them online at some point in the future.

I've since found out that this isn't uncommon in Japan. Apparently this is because the audience have generally come from the manga, so they know the story already. But even then, it seems like an obviously better choice to have those interviews appear after the film. Personally I thought it was a bewildering choice. I would have got 3x more enjoyment from the interviews if they'd come after the film.

Then, imagine how confused I was when the film ended at what seemed to be two thirds of the way through the story. A big build-up that just ends out of nowhere, part way through the story.

Of course, I've since found out that it's not strictly a film, but the first few episodes of the TV show (which also explains some jarring editing and pacing choices - it's just the natural ending of one episode and the start of a new one). I would have greatly appreciated a card at the end of the story but before the credits that said "Find out what happens next in October" when the show launches. It's such an easy thing for them to add in, and it offers a clear marketing advantage too. It would have given me an "aah" moment, and made me really excited to see what comes next. Perhaps there's a card like that at the end of the credits that I didn't see. As it stood, I left the cinema totally baffled. I assumed they'd run out of money or something!

Nothing wrong with offering the first three episodes as movie. Great idea, in fact. But I can't be the only person in the entire world that goes into movies blind like this. In fact I'm sure I'm not, because when the credits rolled I looked around the audience to see a small number of folks looking at each other with confused faces, which I assume is because they also didn't understand why the story just ended.

A shame really, because looking back I enjoyed it a great deal. It's weird and outlandish and experimental and interesting. But at the time I just left the cinema feeling baffled and disappointed.

Also it seems London is also in Scotland as it will be running there this year too. The schedule is still tba.

In the Netherlands an organization called Kaboom Anime will be airing a bunch of anime movies in the next few months:

Link to their list of anime movies they'll be airing

Each of them is in Japanese with English subtitles.

I learned about them last year when I saw they were going to air Only Yesterday (something I never imagined I'd ever witness in my life). Since then I watched almost every movie they aired. Sometimes they have a little presentation before the movie starts, which is also done in English.

correction: Kaboom Anime is an event organized by the Kaboom Animation Film Festival which is the successor to KLIK! and HAFF. These two festivals were around for a long time.

Good to know that I can see GE999 in Amsterdam or Utrecht. A few weeks ago I only saw a listing for Groningen.
