To be fair to Ayarse, her work in Aquarian Age was poor and Madlax's (the 'sister' of Noir) music wasn't as impressive as her other work. He's probably wrong but maybe, just maybe, Noir's music isn't all that.

...See? I can be a nice guy, from time to time.

Here are a few random, off-topic tracks from her various work:

.hack//SIGN: Key of the Twilight - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfwJOyfmXj4
Kara no Koukai 3: Track ? - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSkSy9Y1Z08
My-HiME: Mezame - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJBnFDT6aZk
Xenosaga 2: Communication Breakdown - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEryKU-JHLE
Madlax: Nowhere - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1W66Xka2U_o

Personally, I think it's all pretty generic. Here is the track I consider the main offender - Now, couldn't that easily be the music for a level of virtually any computer game? To me, there's nothing about it which heightens the feeling of what's going on in the scenes where it is played. I dislike the whole 'Genre Mixing' which seems to be her big thing as well, "Lets have some opera... and techno... and rock guitar... yeah. This will do for anything now."

If true, this probably goes a long way to explaining why I dislike the Noir OST:

'Kajiura does not have the pleasure of seeing the rough cut of the show she writes for. She is usually handed sketches of the characters, and what she and Koichi Mashimo have dubbed Music Menues, so she is often confused when she writes.' (from Wikipedia)

...Generic? Her music is so distinctive that I realize it's her music without knowing in advance. Her the vocals and beat make it standout; her music isn't like anything else I've heard, and that's why she's so loved.

It's true that her music does sound very similar in each work, hence me being able to tell just by listening, but not all of her tracks are the same. Her pulse-pounding 'action' tracks with vocals are the best, but I can't say I dislike her more peaceful, BGM only tracks.

Many people suggest a lot of the anime she works on aren't great, and that her music adds a point or two. In the case of .hack//SIGN, which I believe to be her best work, that's probably true. And, more recently, when I watched My-HiME, it was her music that once again increased my enjoyment.

As for the Noir track you uploaded, it wasn't amazing. She's probably improved over the years. But to say she doesn't have any finished content to work with is the reason for you disliking her work in Noir is off. A lot of composers only get basic descriptions and a list of certain track types with only vague titles - that's how it goes. And, since some directors seem to just let her do whatever, they obviously believe she's so good she doesn't need telling anything.

(I still haven't watched Noir because I expect it to be a bore, like most other Bee-Train anime. Madlax wasn't anything special.)

Maybe, but my main complaint would probably be that the music seems to bear very little relation to the visuals. It's possible that it was badly used by the production team of course, but that doesn't change the fact that I still dislike the tracks themselves. Well, there has to be an 'odd one out' who holds the unpopular viewpoint for most things, and I'm pretty much used to it by now. ;)

Just admit you're a bit of a penis and we'll be able to move right along. ;!;^.^;!;

How's Hell Girl going and your plan to watch the remaining episodes on the net? I noted that, out of respect for yours truly, you didn't say anything bad about 6-10, instead opting to post more pointless rubbish over in general chat. That was very sweet of you.

It might be more Mashimo's directorial style of drowning his anime shows in the same few tracks, played loudly and confusingly, which is causing the problem. The majority of negative .hack//SIGN reviews have a lot to say about that.

I hated Noir but quite liked the music (including the Ali Project song). My favourite Kajiura tracks are these though:

Vanity
Tasogare No Umi from .hack//Liminality (average show but some great quirky songs came out of it)
Seijaku Wa Headphone No Naka (completely unrelated to the video but the hilarious attempt to make Gintama look like a serious show kills me)

Noir is one of those series that always frustrate me as I feel it should really have been better than it turned out to be. I think ep12 is probably around about where I gave up on it. It's not without its moments, but I didn't think the action was all that special and the plot didn't feel as fascinating and mysterious as the series apparently wants you to think it is.

It's a shame really, it's not a bad looking series and the characters' globe-trotting adventures make for quite a refreshing change of scene.

Never seen that before - Giving me the finger with both hands, or am I way off?

Hell Girl is improving and I do intend to finish it, but I'll not post much more about it until I'm done, as depending on how it develops from here it could go up with the eights or down, down into the fives. It's proving a very knife-edge series for me. I did actually like two episodes from the last five a lot though; The one with the actress and 'Friends'. Things not going as planned is my preferred kind of plot. Part of my problem has been the predictability - It's not as though I didn't know what I was getting into, but the majority of episodes seem a bit too simplistic: Set up bad guy to be really bad, bordering on evil* and the one who wants revenge to be an entirely innocent victim... Enter Hell Girl, bad guy gets their comeuppance. It seems a bit too much like simplistic revenge fantasy.

*I mean the one with the housewives was just stupid. "My neighbour sees me having an affair, how do I best keep her quiet (even though she has no particular incentive to reveal anything anyway)? Oh I know, by tormenting her and her family at every possible opportunity!" Yeah, 'cause that makes perfect sense...

Rahxephon (complete) Took me a few days but finally got round to watch the series. It was a great watch and I would suggest it to anyone. Similar yet completely different to EVA but just as good imo. I've got the movie too but I'm gonna leave it for a few months.
Naruto Shippuuden Ep 116-120 Thought I'd start back on Naruto seeing as though I have some catching up to do. These episodes included young Kakashi and how he gained his Sharingan. I found them rather entertaining.
Lucky Star Ep 18-19 Still enjoying the series however it's not one that I could watch back to back. One in each few days is plenty.

Did they adapt Kakashi Gaiden then? Never knew that -- awesome!

The real reason people watch My-whatever.

My-Otome: 1-12

It's been pretty much as I expected: a My-HiME spin-off where lots of old characters play new roles, with some nice nods (ShizuruxNatsuki, Mai's brother, Akira's gender...) towards HiME. There's been a lot of silliness, a lot of close-but-not-close-enough lesbian activity, a tentacle raep monster, a character (Nina) who pretty much orgasms when touched, the usual Sunrise character drama and little to no solid plot details. At this stage, besides knowing the obvious, I have no clue what's going on, and I can't say I really give a toss when I have so many funbags in front of me.

I wasn't sold at first because of Arika's (the new-new, non-HiME lead) child-like actions and general stupidity. Where as it was easy to like and connect with Mai in HiME due to her involving love triangle and fairly realistic close relationship with her younger brother, Arika has simply ran around making noise and gotten herself involved in various lulz worthy activities. And she's more loli than fully-developed school girl, which means I can't masturbate with fury over her... and that's a major negative in my mind. BUT I was able to get into it once I saw more of mentally-strong Nina and Mai's main love interest from HiME (he plays the role of an older, more mature embassy worker). So far, there's been some decent secondary character development and poor main character development, though I am hopeful that'll change later on.

Even though HiME was always silly, Otome does take everything a bit too far. Supernatural warriors all wearing maid costumes, having to be virgins to keep their powers (leading to much girlxgirl and otaku love!) and there being anime-esque stores in existence to honour them, complete with all manner of Otome goodies; ranging from figures to costumes, is a bit too much. Since I'm a 'srs biz' guy, I preferred how HiME had more of a normal school setting with lots of craziness involved rather than lots of perverted craziness occurring on another planet... but, as luck would have it, I went into Otome just expecting a 7/10 at best My-HiME cash-in, and I've enjoyed it a lot as a result.

In short, it's another colourful, fan-service laden Sunrise title, and I'm sure lots of drama will follow the fun later on (together with a lot of deus ex machina ********). Up to yet, it's been a 7.5-8/10 title, though I'm sure I'll have to knock a point or two off once more than vague details start being thrown around and the cliched 'lost princess' story takes center stage...

The sort of people who truly appreciate S-CRY-ed.

S-CRY-ed: 1-12

As a much younger, even dumber anime fan, I downloaded and watched these episodes. I dropped it after laughing at a death scene where a character got shot(?), saved his friend as if he wasn't injured, had a conversation on his friends back and then randomly died in 'tragic' fashion. At that stage, I wasn't looking for unintentional comedy and quickly escaped.

After re-watching most of the episodes I had watched previously, I feel I was a tad harsh to have judged it so early, taking it so seriously, but it's very fair to say that S-CRY-ed is a dumb anime aimed at dumb people. All the series has going for it is simplistic, 'IF YOU KEEP FIGHTING, YOU CAN WIN; EVEN AGAINST A GUNDAM!!!111' battles, a tried & tested rivalry between a simpleton with no money and a posh, upper-class type and basic metaphors that remind me very much of Wild Arms 5.

Whenever there's a problem that needs to be overcome, there's a line or two about an imaginary wall that needs to be climbed/destroyed.
When a character randomly gets stronger after previously being owned, both parties involved comment on an imaginary switch being turned on.

And, of course, there's been a 'deep' comment or two about how blue the sky is and how close it appears. (I'm almost surprised a bird flying in the sky hasn't yet been used as a symbol for freedom!)

...But, in all honesty, S-CRY-ed IS a lot of fun; providing you're fine with your brain not being worked and a black guy with a pink afro having the special ability of writing his own scripts and making them into reality. There's a lot of variation between each persons' abilities (I was being serious about the Gundam!) and lots of punching; meaning it's good for passing time if you're a guy/look more like a guy than a girl. If it's a choice between being sat in front of an anime that wants to be deep, not making any sense and throwing in references here and there (Ergo Proxy) and S-CRY-ed, I'll take a a 6/10 aimed at the simple any day of the week.

I fail to see how? Both My's hint at lesbian activity, without actual showing anything. An image showing Natsuki and Shizuru about to kiss is quite fitting for anime that tease male viewers, resulting in much porn being created from the depraved imaginations of the Japanese.

OT: I'm up to 17 of both Otome and SCRYed.

Otome has tried a little too hard to be melodramatic. It's hard to take a love triangle involving an older/mature man, a 15-year-old whose mentally still a child and another 15-year-old seriously. Where as in HiME the triangle was genuinely moving, in Otome it's all been a little too forced; an attempt at making the upcoming battles more dramatic. Not bad, and it's served its purpose, but nowhere near as good as in the 'prequel'.

On the plus side, Otome has so far surpassed my expectations, despite the story so far being practically non-existent; the focus having been characters and comedy. That's about to change, but since the the previous My story was best when nothing was clear...

...As for SCRYed, little has changed since my last post. There's been a trademark anime/JRPG memory loss section/time-skip in order to get the series to meet the required episode length, and more wall metaphors. There's also been a 'supportive' conversation with a dead guy (time stopped, obviously!) that powered-up the lead in cliched fashion when he was about to die.

I'm done with the 16 episodes I watched years ago now, though I can't say I'm excited to have reached new content when it's just going to involve more Kazuma vs. Ryuho battles where the unlimited power released opens the door to... *GASP*... THE OTHER SIDE!!!!1111

Konomini (This Ugly Yet Beautiful World)

I kept thinking someone had swapped my discs for the early "filler" episodes of Mahoromatic up until the last few episodes when it finally decided to have a plot and go somewhere. It could probably have done to be half as long as it was and in the process dropped some of the more boring tropes. I understand that the filler stuff was needed to make the end more meaningful but it was still a bit of a drag to sit through. The last couple of episodes were higher quality.

Great OP song though. Bought the CD a few years ago and it's still good.
