Mononoke the Movie: Phantom in the Rain [English Audio] -
having been picked up by Netflix, figured given what I heard about the series I'd give this a go. The episodic structure of the series more generally means that isn't really difficult to follow at all, and the film itself is a somewhat inventive visual film, following a story set in the Ōoku and where the Medicine seller is featured of course. Outside of perhaps throwing too much at you in a fairly short space of time, this was really entertaining, and sounds there will be more soon enough, with the next film being released in March next year in Japanese theaters. I should watch the TV series at some point too.
1 thing i'd have to make my mind up about that is the TV series had a dub produced in SEA so i'd have to think about which way to watch, perhaps sticking with the original given that (the Medicine Seller would be different no matter which language you pick, having also been recast in Japanese). With this new film, it was very nice to hear Crispin Freeman in a lead once again in the dub (as the Medicine Seller), its been a little while, the other cast also holds their own.

(rewatch) Black Lizard (1968)-Directed by-Kinji Fukasaku

Rewatching this classic finally in HD,an exceptional movie and showcases another side of Fukasaku as he is mostly known for his genre defining Yakuza movies.Black Lizard is based on a play (by Yuko Mishima) and a novel (by Rampo Edogawa),it resolves around the infamous Black Lizard,a jewel thief who kidnaps a jewelers daughter in exchange for the star of egypt,a south african gem worth 120 million yen,it all sounds like a simple plot but the way the plot and characters are presented and the various styles Fukasaku plays with is simply a sight to behold,a mixture of crime thriller, noir, comedy to the bizarre and surreal but the crowning jewel to this surreal masterpiece is the performance of the lead role played by Akihiro Miwa who is best known for being a japanese cabaret singer and drag queen and will be known to Ghibli fans as the voice actor for Moro and the Witch of the Waste, his performance in the Black Lizard is breath taking and he steals every scene he is in and simply chews up the scenery every time he is on screen but the performance is never over the top or campy, essential viewing for fans of the surreal,i always think of this movie as a weird combination of Seijun Suzuki and Yasuharu Hasebe at there most bizzare and surreal but with a darker more artistic twist, heck even Mario Bava's Danger-Diabolik sprang to mind during my rewatch,so if any of that tickle's you fancy i can't recommend The Black Lizard enough.

I rewatched Batman: Under the Red Hood... 😭 ❤️

Jem and the Holograms ongoing, still really enjoying it (I think I'm partway through Episode 19) :)
Ah pure nostalgia overdose regarding Jem and the Holograms,i have very fond memories of watching this show with my brother back in the day, always loved the story and characters of the show and was pretty mature for its time and demographic, the anime Aishite Knight (rock n roll kids) always reminded me of Jem and the Holograms even though aside from the musical aspect they have nothing in common, when i see pics or thumbnails of each show they remind me of each other,i think it is the big colourful 80,s glam rock hairdo's that do it lol.

Yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of 80s US cartoons but Jem is def one of the better ones, it's comforting and cosy but deals with more challenging topics here and there, and I find it so funny how The Misfits (and their manager Eric Raymond tbf) keep doing such dreadful things but never end up in jail. My recent (and currently still ongoing) viewing of this and Buffy the Vampire Slayer are really making me want to read some of the comics for both (Season 8 and onwards for Buffy, and the Jem and the Holograms reboot). And yes they have amazing hair! XD

(rewatch) Black Rose Mansion (1969)-Directed by-Kinji Fukasaku
A year after Fukasaku gave us the spectacular Black Lizard he returned with yet another dark surreal tale called Black Rose Mansion and once again featuring Akihiro Miwa in the leading role this time as the beautiful and mesmerising Ryuko Fujio. The movie is set in the Black Rose Mansion club where Ryuko is a singer with a broken heart and a trail of men with broken hearts behind her and she carries around with her a black rose which will turn red when she finds true love, soon the men attending the club fall in love with her and many lovers from her past turn up to win her heart.A truly tragic love story told through a surreal gothic psychedelic lens with musical scores and dream like sequences all kept together with Fukasaku's masterful direction and Akihro Miwa in one of the most powerful and sensual performances as the beautiful yet tragic femme fatale.

Kinji Fukasaku's first five movies.
Drifting Detective: Tragedy in the Red Valley (1961)
Drifting Detective: Black wind in the Harbor (1961)
Hepcat with the Funky Hat (1961)
Hepcat with a Funky Hat: The 20,000,000 Yen Arm (1961)
Greed in Broad Daylight (1961)

The first five movies are fantastic, the drifting detective and hepcat movies all star Sonny Chiba, after starring in few tokusatsu shows in the late 50,s early 60,s he would eventually get his first major role in drifting detective:tragedy in the red valley and would be the start of a long collaboration with Fukasaku,so it is great to see the humble beginnings of these two giants of japanese cinema.Greed in Broad Daylight being Fukasaku's fifth movie and technically his first full feature and starring the legendary Tetsurō Tamba is about a bunch of misfits who plan to attack a U.S. military cash transport truck and is another early example of the greatness to come regarding Fukasaku's directing skills.
