The Boy and the Beast (rewatch)

Got to give credit where it's due: Studio Canal have really nailed it with this BD. It's faultless, and the subs are the same as the cinema release, which is great, because I like that translation a lot.

Still not that keen on the orange spine of the art sleeve and slipcover, but at least they didn't make the amusing gaffe that they did with their logo on the cover of Isao Takahata and his Tale of the Princess Kaguya:

God I love this series.

If there was meant to be a point to all of that, I think I must've missed it.
 
Ulysses 31 (1-3 dub)
The animation has definitely stood the test of time better than some of the voice acting.

Whilst watching this the Zortrans (blue aliens) reminded me of the Daft Punk videos for One More Time and Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. So I wondered as Ulysses 31 was a Japanese-French collab whether it was an influence, so tried to look it up. Turns out Leiji Matsumoto (Space Pilot Captain Harlock) was the influence they named and was the visual supervisor on the videos and not only that they animated the entire album! So I had to watch that, it's called Interstellar 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem.

As I mentioned in my introductory post the voice acting is very "of its time" :) I think the voices suit the characters but unfortunately the dubbing is quite stilted and awkward. Weirdly there are a lot of "oh"s and other exclamations that seem out of place. Sometimes the timing seems off and some of the dialogue's phrasing can be a little awkward. It also suffers from the issue of a lot of early dubs in that it often tries to cram a ton of dialogue in to the point where some of the actors sound a little breathless at the end of a sentence. An unfortunate side effect of the technology being in its infancy back then and also the fact the languages of French, Japanese and English are very different. I do really like Ulysses voice actor even if his delivery isn't perfect.

Amsuingly Shirka (the computer of the Odyssey) is really the only voice that is perfect.

Yeah the Zatrians definitely resemble some of Leji Matsumoto's characters and his work is quite popular in France and a lot of Europe.
 
Outlaw Star - Episodes 1 - 4 (Blu-ray)

It's taken me a long while to get round to Outlaw Star. I knew very little about it other than it is well regarded and having watched these first few episodes I'm surprised at how many similarities Cowboy Bebop has to Outlaw Star. So far I'm really enjoying the story (a little generic but entertaining) and I love the way it looks, especially in HD.

Eureka Seven AO (complete)
Having watched Eureka Seven I only really wanted to watch this to sort of finish the story. Apart from being a rubbish story, AO feels disassociated from the original. Also the way they wrapped up the series made it all feel very inconsequential and makes me wonder why I bothered.

EDIT - On a side note whenever someone shouted out the protaganist's name it sounded like they'd trapped their finger. Ow!!!!
