Your best & worst of the Autumn/ Fall season

crashmatt

Death Scythe
Its that time again where shows are reaching their conclusion. I don't think its been a great season but there are still some decent shows out there. Anyway here's mine.

Excellent >Good

Magus Bride
- I Love this series, the attention to detail and the characters. I really feel like im watching something special

Girls Last Tour - I'm not a huge fan of the chibi character designs but there is something about the world setup and atmosphere that is fascinating. It has a great soundtrack as well.

Garo Vanishing Line - just good dumb fun

Recovery of an MMO Junkie - A real surprise, it's refreshing and there is some nice messages in what the show is trying to convey.

Children of the Whale- Quite dark at times, but an interesting fantasy which has some original touches as well as borrowing from Nausica and From the New World.

Food Wars - Love Food Wars, season 3 is much better that season 2

Average

Just Because - fairly standard teen high school romance, its a shame it doesn't really offer anything new.

It would be good if only a little sister was here - Mostly trash but can be fun at times

Poor > Awful

Fate Apocryphya - Bland characters (except Mordred)and confusing story, held together by solid action scenes. oh yeah and Jack the ripper Loli we can all do without

Zodiac Wars - When it focuses on action its fine but dragged down by tedious flashbacks and recently the animation has taken a dive

I'm gonna steal your rating system :p

Excellent > Good

The Ancient Magus Bride - 10/10 adaption.
March Comes in like a Lion Season 2 - Still brilliant. They're really bringing the emotion this season.
Blood Blockade Barricade & Beyond - Dare I say I'm enjoying this season more than the first?!
Food Wars Season 3 - More Foodie goodness
Welcome to the Ballroom - Chinatsu's introduction greatly improved the overall quality of the show for me.
Konohana Kitan - Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous.
Recovery of an MMO Junkie - which is also my surprise of the season, was not feeling the first 2-3 episodes, glad I stuck on as it's great!
Blend S - My only complaint is that I wish they'd do more with the character archetypes.
Umaru Season 2 - She's still a loveable tyrant! A big positive to this second season is that you can see her gradually growing as a person.

Average

Love is like a Cocktail - Cute!!
Love Live Sunshine Season 2 - Nothing ground breaking ...it's all more of the same and that's what I wanted.
Inuyashiki - I feel this may work better as a manga?

Poor > Awful

Zodiac Wars - Trashy fun, shame about the decline in animation. Least it shouldn't go Terra Formars: Revenge animation bad ... :S
Animegataris - References: The Anime
Black Clover - Yeah..hoping we have less Asta and more of everyone else as the series progresses..

I'm very interested in watching Land of the Lustrous and Girls Last Tour at some point too.

Excellent
Blend S - Just a really good and fun time. I don't think it's anything groundbreaking, but it makes me laugh consistently, the characters are all likeable and the animation is above average for this kind of thing. I'd happily take a S2!

Himouto! Umaru-chan Season 2 - You know, I think I actually forgot how much I really enjoy Umaru. Again, it's another show full of laughs and great characters, but this one also has a lot of heart to it. Even though Umaru is bratty and annoying, you can still really feel the strong bond between her and her brother.

Inuyashiki - I enjoy this almost purely on a level of shock-value. It's been awhile since I've seen a show so balls to the wall, so unrelenting in its depictions of violence and nastiness, I kind of love it. Of course, there is a bit more to it than that, the antagonist, Hiro, is genuinely great, and MAPPA's animation is top notch as always, but the fact when I tune in every week I have no idea what extreme I'll see next is great at keeping me coming back.

Blood Blockade Battlefront and Beyond - Not much has changed between Season 1 and this follow up, which is good because I loved Season 1 of BBB. This is just over-the-top sci-fi nonsense and I love every second of it.

The Ancient Magus' Bride - Probably my pick for the best show this season (although there's so much good stuff this season, it's hard to pick), this is just a gorgeous looking show with a real sense of emotional depth. Given this is two cour, it's still under half way through, but so far, so good.

Girls' Last Tour - Whilst this is a cutesy slice of life series on the surface, there's a real sense of something far more complex beneath the surface, with the conversations between the two girls sometimes getting philosophical or existential, yet despite these heavy topics, the show itself remains fairly light in tone, fun and engaging, with Chito and Yuuri having amazing chemistry. I'm loving this far more than I could've predicted.

Good
UQ Holder - Man, I was really on board for this when it started, but as soon as the UQ Holders themselves were introduced, this become really meandering. Still pretty fun to watch, but with the plot being pretty thin on the ground, I feel this is somewhat of a missed opportunity. Granted, there have been some interesting revelations in the last couple of episodes, and the last cliffhanger was great, but I wished this had all happened sooner. Hopefully there's a second season.

Food Wars Season 3 - I've never been able to muster quite the level of excitement for this franchise as most others can. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy it, I just don't find it to be this mind blowingly amazing shounen that's up there with the best of them. Season 3 has carried on this status quo of "good but not amazing" and that's perfectly fine. What kind of kills it for me is a total lack of tension, Soma wins pretty much every time, mostly because the plot demands it, with his loss meaning his expulsion, which couldn't reasonably happen and have the series continue. You could say every shounen is prone to this, but none put the negative outcome front and center and outright say the negative repercussions right before a battle like Food Wars does, drawing more attention to the obvious outcome. This show works so much better when the shokugeki are between characters who could reasonably lose.

Love Live Sunshine Season 2 - Love Live Season 2 is an all-time favourite anime of mine, bringing the plot of the first to a really emotional climax that can almost bring me to tears but man, I'm just not really feeling Sunshine's sequel so much. It's still good, but I just don't have the same emotional resonance with this group as I did the other girls.

Average
Black Clover - I don't quite believe in all the hate Black Clover gets. Sure, Asta is annoying as all hell, but that aside, it's just a painfully average shounen, not anything to write home about, but nothing worth bashing either. Next king of shounen, as Crunchyroll likes to proclaim, it is certainly not, but I'll stick with it. Will I stick with it for the whole 51 episodes? Well, we'll see...

Excellent

Ancient Magus' Bride
I love the world and it's atmosphere, and the characters are complex, and the story doesn't dump exposition everywhere. It feels natural, which is a real feat in storytelling.

Food Wars! The Third Plate More of the consistently good story, and the great animation and enjoyable characters, plus more food porn.

Inuyashiki The unexpected but excellent choice for my list. Such a visceral and intriguing series that, like Gantz before it, really pushes the boundaries in terms of its content and violence (that bathtub death was haunting)

Very Good

Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond
Just as zany and sporadic as the first season, I just like these characters and their interactions with the bizarre and unpredictable world around them.

Average

Black Clover
This is slowly becoming a solid series, but ten episodes in the only thing stopping me from not watching the rest is my manga-reading friends insistence that it'll pick up soon.

I won't count Boruto but that's be under a category of "good" since it's been enjoyable so far and now it's really getting into the story.

Excellent
March Comes In Like A Lion Season 2 - Continues the brilliance of the first season. Superb.
Welcome to the Ballroom
Inuyashiki
Recovery of an MMO Junkie - I had zero expectations of this going in but It's been the series I've been most excited to watch every week!

Very good
A Sisters All You Need - Don't let the first couple of minutes put you off! It's actually very enjoyable.
Blend S - Funniest show of the season
Children of the Whales
Food Wars! The Third Plate - More of the same. (In a good way)

Good
Black Clover - Yes, Asta's voice is an abomination and its got all the shounen tropes you come to expect but It's still a decent enough show for me.
Girls last Tour - (Still only 4 episodes in so I'll probably bump this up once I've watched a few more)
Kino's Journey 2017 - I feel like I'd be enjoying this a lot more if I hadn't seen the original, which I liked a lot more. Still a very solid series though.

Excellent

The Ancient Magus Bride - Literally AOTY
Hozuki's Coolheadedness S2 - I can't think of a funnier comedy.

Good

Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond - Not much different from S1. Its fun, but not really as exciting as S1 also.

Poor

Black Clover - I haven't watched much this season so in the small subset of shows I've watched it was the poorest of the season for me

Very Good
A Sister is all you need
Blend-S (added 26/12)
Girls Last Tour
Konohana Kitan - Favorite this season
Love Live Sunshine

Good
Kings Game - Actually pretty bad

Meh

Not watched enough of
Magus Bride

I generally wait to see what you guys say then binge later, but I watched a few first episodes for the Crunchyroll passport thing and have been watching Juni Taisen and Girls' Last Tour.

The former is trashy fun when on form and some of the backstories are OK, I think it could have been structured better, but I guess they're following the manga (I have no idea how closely).
The latter is very enjoyable with the interactions between the girls, but I was hoping for some answers to the questions about the world I have.

On my list to watch:
Ancient Magus' Bride - enjoyed the OVA and everybody has raved about it.
MMO Junkie - I liked the first episode.
Inuyashiki - seems to be interesting.
Blend S/Konohana Kitan - both seem similar-ish to some shows I've liked.
And
Children of the Whale
How have you been watching? I'm waiting on Netflix! Another one I've seen high on lists.

EDIT: Just to remind myself as I keep forgetting Yuki Yuna 2

Best - Ballroom, Oh how Amazon has killed this show
Inyuashiki oh how people ignore Amazon shows
Food Wars - Oh well I never wanted to own it thanks to CR stealing it

Worst - Altair, Boring the anime
Fate Apoc literally only one good character Jeanne.
AND WE GET IT ASTOLFO IS A MAN OKAY

There's only six show's from the current season that i'm watching and the only bad one is the new Kino. Imouto show is also kinda shlock but at least it's enterteining shlock https://myanimelist.net/anime/35413/Imouto_sae_Ireba_Ii

Blend S is really the surprise hit of the season. I would have expected it to be a awful moe show but it's suprisingly funny series and it has the best faces of the season.

Another surprise hit is Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou. The first episode felt too moeish but it turned out to be pretty atmospheric show. It has it's ups and downs but i still really like it.

Umaru sequel also kinda surprised me because i didn't like the first season all that much but i'been enjoying the sequel.

Mahou honestly hasn't hit me hard yet (6ep watched so i'm behind) but i do like it.

Konohana Kitan - Has been far and away by favourite of the season so far! This show is just too great.

Good:
A Sister's All You Need Weird start aside this show has been a lotta fun and refreshing with chars being adults!
Anime-Gataris Again fun show and there is something charming watching an anime about people like us lol
Kino Super interesting seeing all these countries, some stories are more compelling that others really enjoyed #5 and 6.
Bride Highly absorbing took a while to get going though.

Fun:
Juni Taisen- Some cool fights and like the unconventionality of it.

Overall stronger than the the summer
