Virgin Punk: Clockwork Girl - I enjoyed this a lot. It’s only 33 minutes and clearly setting up for more episodes down the line so there is nothing approaching a resolution to anything put to scene. But it uses the run time to have at least 3 really outstanding action scenes that are well-paced and storyboarded. I tend to struggle with action movies because I always feel like they run out of ideas before the end and are just exhausting. All three of the John Wick films I saw felt 20-30 minutes too long, for example. So something that is barely longer than an average episode of television but is always doing something different is closer to what I want (maybe Hong Kong movies will suit me more). The Japanese Blu Ray has the full English dub and it’s rock solid. Virgin Punk: Clockwork Girl is such an ugly name. Virgin Punk sounds fine. Clockwork Girl also sounds fine. The combination of them is really offputting.

I started A Hundred Scenes of Awajima late in the season when I realised the director was Morio Asaka again. This story of the long-lasting and wide-ranging effects of bullying at a theatrical school clearly based upon the Takarazuka Music School, is a series of vignettes rather than a linear narrative. This meant it took me several episodes to properly grasp what was going on. The shifting perspectives also meant I struggled to remember who was who. Once I cottoned on to what was happening I could then appreciate the artistry on display. Morio Asaka is one of the most empathetic observers of human foibles in anime. Rating: a low very good.

I'm not sure why this was so popular (top scoring original/new show of the season on MAL). The mood flips all over the place and the MC is just a robot doing what she was programmed to do, so the story is a bit dull at the moment. If she broke her programming and did something more interesting then it would be better. The side characters are either all robots too or "wacky" aliens!

Much like Fairy Gone, the Mafia have the more interesting characters.
For a comedy, I laughed once.
