Diebuster, eps 1–6 (complete)
Like many other folks here did, no doubt, I got my copy of the CE of this in the post recently, and I've been keen to finally see it. It's been a good while in the making, but with this, I was at last able to uphold my half of an ancient pact made with
@ayase.
Speaking of, have you watched Diebuster yet, Neil? This is the deal, if we watch Franxx, you watch that! I wanna know what you think of it.
(Yeah, I'd forgotten all about it, too, until I came across that post while searching the forums last year for the term "Diebuster" while looking for any release updates on the AL BD.)
So, what
did I think of it? Simple: I really enjoyed it. So much so that I watched the entire thing in a single sitting today. It's very much a Gainax show in the spirit of
FLCL and
Gurren Lagann, and that's a very good thing for me, because I love both of those. Despite having known about this series for absolutely years, I absolutely did not see coming the revelation about protagonist Nono's identity early in episode 2. (She's
a robot!
)
I enjoyed the characters — Nono herself, Lal'C, Tycho — the latter of whom I came to understand the motives of, and I was kinda stopped in my tracks by what we learned in one episode about her ear piercings. Great payoff. The voice cast were excellent, too; the latter two of our main trio were voiced by Maaya Sakamoto and Miyuki Sawashiro, a couple of my favourite
seiyuu, who also show up in
Evangelion's Rebuild films.
I liked the space battles with their
Gurren Lagann levels of bombast, and I spotted some elements of the design work that seem to have filtered their way into the aforementioned
Eva movies. (I was absolutely shocked to see Captain Hatori wearing Captain Katsuragi's uniform from
Evangelion 3.0!)
Lastly, and with the minimum of spoilers, I was not anticipating until very late in the game that the finale would tie in the way it did with
the original Gunbuster.
So, yep: thoroughly enjoyed it, and I'll be wanting to watch it again at some point.
