Josee, The Tiger And The Fish
Sweet and charming. There was a realness to the characters in how most of them were both likable and deeply unlikable at the same. The emotional beats in the 2nd half were all done really well. Not the best film of its ilk but very well done and I'll definitely watch it again as some point.
I've already watched it twice-subbed only and dubbed, I think it comes across better in english than japanese. Needless to say I really enjoyed it a lot.

The Genius Prince's Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt (English Dub) Episode 6

I'm Quitting Heroing Episode 2 Misjudged.

Isekai Quartet (Rewatch) Episode 1-12 & Isekai Quartet 2 (Rewatch) Episode 1-12 (Complete. Upon revisiting I still found this to be as fun and quirky as it was back when it first aired and certain character interactions / scenarios are as funny as before. I'm hopeful that the next installments for the ICU will be as entertaining.) 3.5/5

It's that time of the season again. With so much in my backlog, I generally don't bother with the 3-episode rule. If a show doesn't grab me in the first episode, it gets dragged behind the chemical sheds for a bullet in the back of the head.

In the Heart of Kunoichi Tsubaki (ep 1) - I kept waiting for the inciting incident. And waiting. And waiting. If one is coming it isn't in the first episode and I'm not convinced it's worth waiting for. Meanwhile the characters weren't entertaining enough to fill the dead time, and incidental characters kept repeating the same dialogue over and over for some reason. Dropped.

Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie
(ep 1) - The sheer number of times the main character randomly nearly died made me wonder if this is a stealth Final Destination anime, but it's neither funny nor interesting. Empty SoL series like this live or die by how entertaining their characters are, and this bunch don't pass muster. Dropped.

The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical Nobody
(ep 1) - This show managed the unenviable task of disappointing me three times in 20 minutes. First, I thought it was a reverse isekai, but the protagonist is just reborn back into the same generic fantasyland he started in. Second, the potentially interesting premise promised by that title is a lie because he's reborn with all the powers he had before and is OP from the start (yawn). But worst is that it's trying to be a comedy, but has no sense of comic timing. At. All. Dropped.

Mahjong Soul Pon
(eps 0 and 1) - Episode 0 was hilarious, episode 1 not so much. It's only a minute long minus credits though, so there's nothing to lose in trying a few more. Watchlist.

Love After World Domination
(ep 1) - It's off to a good start. There's a risk of it being a one-trick pony, but hopefully it won't run out of steam. Watchlist.

Aharen-san wa Hakarenai
(eps 1-2) - This is shaping up to be a good comedy. The 'bone conduction' gag nearly killed me. Watchlist.

Spy x Family
(ep 1) - Great first episode. Looks like the hype for this one wasn't misplaced. Watchlist.

Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It season 2
(ep 1) - I quite enjoyed the first season, but felt it was already running out of steam by the end of that one. The start of season 2 has a couple of good moments, but hasn't quite convinced me otherwise yet. On probation.

Miss Shachiku and the Little Baby Ghost
(ep 1) - This was decent, but the material covered in episode 1 felt stretched thin, and would have been twice as good had it been half as long. On probation.

Heroines Run the Show ep1: I don't know what it is about HoneyWorks anime that doesn't click with me; on paper this is a decently animated school series with an ongoing plot and reasonably motivated characters but so far each time I've watched one of their spin-offs I struggle to stay engaged. Perhaps there's a subtle feeling that we're only scraping the surface of a larger universe and it's putting me off? I don't know. We're introduced to a clumsy girl with bushy eyebrows, messy hair and a permanent air of cluelessness who accidentally ends up entangled (not in the interesting way!) with a pair of haughty male idols from her class through their management. The story competently sets up an underlying tension in the idols' relationship and gives everyone unique designs and hobbies; even the kind-of-useless lead has a genuine passion for her sports club. I honestly don't know why I find it all so tepid and aimless in spite of there being no glaring problems. I couldn't tell you anything that happened in the previous movies I watched in the same HoneyWorks-verse either. It all just washes over me without leaving any lasting impression.

The Dawn of the Witch ep1: This, however, did leave an impression, though I wasn't a fan. It turns out that it's a spin-off of Grimoire of Zero, which was a show I never watched due to it being locked to HIDIVE. Then when I finally subscribed there was a lot more, newer stuff out and GoZ never looked interesting enough to warrant adding it to my list. I didn't think that any knowledge of the former series was strictly necessary at first as its a super-generic fantasy world with a school - hardly a complex setup! - and the characters keep telling one another basic facts about recent history in a stilted, unnatural way to ensure that new viewers know what's going on. There's some plot about a dunce student with some potentially complicated backstory/powers teaming up with a more capable classmate, and both of them are accompanied by a teacher who looks like a preteen but speaks overly-formally and appears to dislike wearing either skirts or trousers. I'm only mentioning this because the camera is obsessed with being at a low angle every time she's on-screen and zooming in on her crotch every now and then. It's certainly one approach to fan service but as with Konosuba's first-episode horny camerawork whenever Aqua was around, I find the whole thing weirdly off-putting (not to mention disastrous for taking Loux even slightly seriously as a character). The references back to GoZ gradually became more and more important, though, and I was left feeling the same way I did during the tedious last season of Tenchi Muyou. Perhaps it's better when the original show is watched first, after all.

Requiem of the Rose King ep13: The animation is washed-out and simple, more like a picture book at times than an animated series (which is ironic when the manga has better art and already exists!) but I still really enjoy this show. It's fun how some of the characters have clearly aged dramatically since the previous episode, which was set several years earlier in the timeline, while others look mostly the same. I appreciate that more happens in the average episode of RotRK than in entire full-length series elsewhere and I don't mind having to keep track of half a dozen different people named Edward at a time, though I can see why other people would find it unbearable!
