Your anime viewing journal

Viewing journal threads generally don't interest me much, but I had to post SOMEWHERE about this:

I worked all through my weekend on stuff I didn't want to, and it got to 1:00 AM, and I just had to watch something for an hour or so to to wind down. I nearly didn't, because I was (and am, as I type this) completely knackered. But I decided I'd watch Mardock Scramble: The First Compression.

To be honest, I had pretty much no expectations. I had heard good things, but the look of the movies didn't really grab me, and the subject matter sounded like it would be hard work. I was expecting The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by way of GITS.

Fair to say, I had no idea it would be so good! I expected schlock, but this is an intelligent, well made movie with SUPERB characters, and it reminded me of the feel of William Gibson's best novels. It's a long, long while since ANY movie has made me go 'whoa' as the end credits rolled. Fantastic!

Rumbling Hearts episodes 6-10

Still think this is one of the best romance series I've ever seen. The tension in the central love triangle is incredible, and it treats its characters very maturely - these are people that properly screw up, have fully fleshed out relationships, have bad days and in general stab each other in the back. The main character is such a jerk at times, but equally, it's all the more believable because you can imagine someone like him in real life.

I went into Rumbling Hearts not expecting much, especially considering it's based on a porn game, but it's become one of my favourite shows. There's not many romances that deal with traumatic injury and actually have the characters going beyond high school and having to deal with the real world Although Ayu can go die in a fire.

Oh no, I like Ayu! Even if she is the most cliched example of a Tsundere ever...

But yeah, I really liked the maturity of the show - for a start, the characters actually have sex instead of just fooling around and blushing and getting nosebleeds - and like you say, it deals with 'beyond the highschool' in probably the best way I've seen outside of Clannad After Story.

You've just gotta feel for Mistuki though - poor girl.

Yeah, that too. Not just Mitsuki, everyone gets emotionally steamrollered in that show. I genuinely don't know what I'd do if I'd been in Narumi's place. Did you watch the OVAs too?

Tsukihime eps 5-8

Still don't get why this is as revered as it seems to be in certain quarters. Found it a bit of a slog to get through if I'm honest - it's not even like a poor man's Garden of Sinners, it's just a bit, meh... And then in episode seven it goes into some weird harem thing. And the animation quality on the whole is pretty poor. Still, great OP theme though.

Not yet - still trying to track down the last volume at a reasonable price actually.

The Tale of Princess Kaguya

....what? Space Buddha riding clouds from the moon...what?.

Reading through a summary of the original tale, I think the problem with the movie was that it didn't have as much of a resolution for Kaguya as the tale did. I mean, she wasn't even allowed to say her goodbyes or even finish her monologue before the magic robe shut her up.

Cross Ange: Rondo of Angels and Dragons - Episode 25 [Final]

Cross Ange had its faults but it was consistent in its tone and I found it easy going entertainment.

Aldnoah.Zero - Episode 24 [Final]

I thought the second half was better than the first and there were some great action sequences in Aldnoah.Zero but I still can't warm to it as a series.

Mobile Suit Z Gundam - Episodes 4 - 6 (Blu-ray)

Really enjoying watching this again.

Sekirei eps 5-12

Weirdly worked better as a comedy than a harem show for me - I laughed way more than I thought I would, and to be honest there's something inherently funny about 'boob' shows as brazen as this or High School DxD. No where near as good a fighting girls show as something like Ikki Tousen though. I'd give it a 7 at best.
