Young fan of anime needing advice. (Please answer!)

Sorry if this is a bit rude, but why did you show her a copy with a higher age rating, especially if it's been rated in this country at an acceptable age limit. In any case different countries, as has been explained, have different countries have different standards when it comes to rating different material. Australia is very liberal on violence and strong humour, but sex is a bit taboo as is the depiction of minors. Neon Genesis was banned (If I remember right) in New Zealand and very restricted in Australia, yet got 15 here. The best thing to do is try and source releases that have been released here previously and show your parents those. From experience the UK and US are broadly similar with the UK leaning slightly more towards liberal than America. Other countries tend to be very conservative, especially German and New Zealand.

My mum goes waaaaay too far with the whole age ratings thing. If it's a 15 due to the violence, it's acceptable, but if it's due to the sexual content, then she won't let me anywhere near it.

I asked about putting the R4 release of Azumanga Daioh on my Christmas list (rated MA15+ in Australia) even though its rated PG/12 in the UK and she said

NOPE LOL

which pisses me off a little bit.

Have another crack at it in a week or two perhaps. Be prepared to point out it was rated with no cuts by the BBFC as PG/12 and surely the official UK rating must hold more weight than a foreign country, even if it is Australia. Might finally make the BBFC useful to someone somewhere that way.

Haganai is rated M for "Sexual violence, sexual references and animated nudity"
High School DxD is rated MA15+ for "Strong sexual references, animated nudity and violence"

I'm pinning that totally on the Haganai OVA, DxD has way more nudity and sexual references but there's several pretty shocking parts in that OVA that'll cross the line for some people.

Just as a note on the Secret of Mamo, even though I think it's rated 12 in the UK, it does have some fleeting nudity and a generally smuttier tone than most Lupin films. Cagliostro is completely fine though; it's family-friendly in the Indiana Jones sense.

I thought the TV Series was a PG - 12?

I heard from previous discussions and reports years ago that Neon Genesis got a lot of bad press for it's religious iconography and I think, the sexualisation of minors. I know a number of latino countries went ape (same countries thought pokemon was evil???). I think New Zealand and Australia were mentioned in the same breath. If I've made this up over the years I apologise and would like clarification on this.

Evangelion did receive a 15 but only for Death & Rebirth and End of Evangelion (and 2.22 & possibly 3.33 from Rebuild).

A majority of the episodes were rated PG while a certain few were rated 12 (Episode 9, 20, 24, 25 & 26).

Guessing EoE / D&RB were rated 15 because of - well...

"THAT scene". You all know what I'm talking about.

It was so cool when Evangelion used to air at 10 in the morning on the Sci-Fi channel back when I was 12. It was even cooler when I stayed up for the midnight stuff on a Saturday night a couple of times when my parents were out, for the likes of Roujin Z and Riding Bean.

Sometimes I get up extra early (4 ish) in the morning on weekends and pop an anime DVD on.

Balancing the noise between loud enough so you can hear it and quiet enough so you don't wake your parents is difficult.

Thanks for that, my brother is currently borrowing my boxset so I couldn't check. Glad to see I wasn't going mad. Yes, 2.22 is a 15. Not sure that 3.33 will be, I can't seem to remember any 'shocking' scenes in it that would make it a 15....

I remember those days as well (Saiko Exciting on SciFi) Riding bean is excellent (18 rated for very obvious reasons) and Roujin Z is definitely worth a look.

Sounds like you might find some headphones useful. I always use headphones for listening to tv (except when I'm eating and the cable gets in the way), the difference in sound quality from the built-in tv speakers is huge. About £30 for something decent like Sennheiser HD202, keep the volume as loud as you like and no-one has to know when you are watching some slightly pervy anime :p

I could guess a few:
One scene of Sexualised Nudity ~ Shinji accidently walks in to Rei while she was naked
One scene of Strong Gore ~ Kaworu's departure
Some scenes of Moderate Threat ~ Guns pointed at Shinji plus the whole collar thing

This situation escalated quickly.

Now for Christmas I'm asking for Portable Region-Free DVD Player
K-On! from gran
Azumanga collection from mum and dad

With my possible Christmas money I'll be getting:
Oreimo collection
Haganai LE
High School DxD LE
Dai Guard vol. 1-6

All I need to do is to tell my dad the Australian ratings (except from Oreimo)

I just say that Oreimo's rated 13+ on back of case.
Haganai is rated M in Australia.
DxD is rated MA15+ in Australia.

Let's just hope he doesn't look in the case for DxD (lots of boobs)

Regarding Oreimo, there's virtually nothing wrong with it (hence the 13UP rating for the US release). The reason it was given a MA15+ in Australia was because of heavy eroge (Adult Visual Novel) references but Australia is very strict in contrast to the BBFC and other rating systems (well except Germany).

The LE for DxD might not be around after Christmas. It's out of print or just going out. Once the stocks gone, then there's no more LE.

In case you don't get one, DxD and Haganai don't need a multi-region DVD player. The DVDs are 1,2,4.

Do you think I'll be able to get hold of DxD LE 1.5 weeks after Christmas day?

Otherwise I'll just go buy To-Love-Ru or Future Diary or something.

Okay, I've got my Christmas of anime 2013 sorted out:

K-on from gran
Azumanga Daioh from mum
??????? From dad
Money from other relatives to buy:

Haganai LE
Highschool DxD LE
Mawaru Penguin Drum Part 1
Mawaru Penguin Drum Part 2

Oh f-ck, its only October

Honestly I have no idea. Personally, if I knew an item I wanted was out of print, or going out of print I would buy it as soon as possible.
