Young fan of anime needing advice. (Please answer!)

So, I'm a very young fan of anime, as I have been since I was about 6 (look at my profile for my age if you have to). When I was about 6 I started watching Full Metal Alchemist and loved it. At age 8 I discovered Lucky Star, age 9 TMoHS, and now, age 12, things like High School of the Dead (yes I know).

I'm wanting to import the Haganai, School Days and High School DxD DVDs from America and Japan, but they haven't been rated in the UK. How can I convince my dad to let me buy them without a BBFC classification (i'm thinking of editing a page on the BBFC website to make it say that they are all 15 rated using the F12 trick).

Also, how do I convince him to let me buy anime figures in seemingly sexually suggestive poses? It's not like I'm gonna fap to them, I just like collecting anime merchandise.

All answers appreciated,
frostythebudgie

Re: Young fan of anime. Need help!

Howdy, frosty! First off, when I was your age, I was watching Pokemon and Dragonball - anime watchers sure grow up fast these days! Good job. :p

Now, onto the topic at hand. Who is actually paying for the items; when I was 12 my own income was fairly thin on the ground, to say the least? Also don't lie to your father - that will never end well.

Re: Young fan of anime. Need help!

Firstly, you picked an amazing series as your first anime, my personal favourite infact :D Like AntAce, I grew up with Pokemon and then DBZ so this really makes me feel old!

I think it might be tricky with High School DxD in particular, but it sounds like your dad trusts you to watch 15 rated media at least. What is his approach to letting you watch other movies?

Well, my pocket money is £5 per week from father. It's just I finished watching High School DxD online, loved it and wanted to buy the DVD/Blu-ray double pack on Amazon for twenty-something pounds.
If it helps at all, I'm very mature, get top marks at school, and (as you may have noticed) am one of the few 12 year olds alive that can both use the internet and construct a sentence properly!

To be honest, I watch a wide range of anime. I've seen lots of things online, fron Pokemon to (cough cough) Berserk.

I've seen some 18 rated stuff (e.g. all 4 Alien films, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), however, none of these are heavy in terms of sexual content. However, after watching HSDxD, I only thought it would really get a 15 rating.

Haganai and High School DxD are rated as 17+ on Rightstuf, which is the same for Highschool of the Dead. So, perhaps if you show him that he will be fine with it?

Apologies for not being very helpful. My parents never questioned it/I never had to convince them, even when I watched things like 3x3 Eyes, Urotsukidoji, Ninja Scroll etc in primary school...

But lying about the ratings and such will just make matters worse. Be honest and upfront with them.

How did you get to see HSOTD?

I'm not sure we can help you trick your dad - it's bad for the conscience, and he's trying to do what's best for you. Haganai (and probably HS DxD) is bound to come over to the UK at some point as people scramble for dubbed content in a world where more and more titles are being released without dubs, and I don't think that School Days has been licensed yet? The Japanese versions don't have subtitles so be very careful the imports you're looking at aren't fakes.

Perhaps you can show your dad some parts of the show so he understands why you like it? I can understand his anxiety, but you do sound as though you've got it together so if you're upfront with him he'll probably react better (in the long run) than if you trick him now.

Urotsukidoji?!

AWESOME!

It's worth giving it a shot.

Try GolGotha's idea then - the US is much more conservative about most sexual content than the UK (and much less conservative about violence...) so you could explain that 17+ isn't a big leap from 15+ in that context.

I watched Urotsukidoji with my mother. I was 21 at the time, but wanted to crawl into my hand and die while the film unfolded while simultaneously trying to delete it with the power of my mind as she looked on is fascinated horror. It took a lot of Studio Ghibli to persuade her anime wasn't all tentacle rape and gorn after that.

Anyway, there wasn't any anime around when I was 12 but I was allowed to watch 18 rated horror films, my Mum used to meet me after school and we'd go pick one to rent. The key was honesty, she knew I could handle it, so she allowed me. Don't deceive your Dad, forbidden fruit is tempting, but you don't want to incur a backlash.

Thanks.
I'm thinking of buying a couple other imports first (Pani Poni Dash, Air TV) to get him used to me importing foreign DVDs, then ask about Haganai.

It's probably best to be up front about it and tell him that i've watched them online.

Daayuuumm, watching Urotsukidoji with your mother? That's horrible at any age.

Good point. It's not pornographic. True, you could still fap to it, but I'm not here to do that. I've already seen it, I just want to add to my anime collection.

EDIT: Whoops, by the way I'm talking about HSDxD in the second paragraph.

Well, in that case of you having the ability to save up and buy these items yourself, I'd echo the sentiment of showing your dad just what it is you wish to buy - ultimately it's going to be his call, until your older that is. If your dad has no issues with you watching shows like Highschool of the Dead, I doubt he'd have any problems with Haganai, which is comparatively tame.

When it comes to figures, as long as they're fully clothed, you should be fine - your wallet won't be though.

Slight addendum: I don't think School Days has ever had a sub/dub release, so I'd avoid that like the plague. If you do get it, just tell your father it's a comedy - I sure as hell laughed all the way through it!

Haha, they still are ;-)

With alcohol they thought if they banned me from touching it until I was 18 I would end up being convinced by the other kids my age to steal some from the alcohol cupboard at home, take it down the park and get **** faced. I would of probably woken up in a ditch somewhere and who knows what could happened....so, they used to let me drink at home. I got to drink, and know my limits, and they got to keep an eye on me.

So, just talk to your parents. Explain to them that you want to watch it and that you're mature enough to handle it. And that if you decide you aren't, you'll turn it off and try again at another date. Lying to them or watching it behind their backs will just make things worse - but you know that, you're a smart kid.

Well yes, but I mean if the USA rated it a 17 then I imagine if they were to be released here they would receive the same rating as Highschool of the Dead.

Edit: Figures wise, perhaps get some tame ones for now and then slowly add the odd swimwear one in - that way it looks like you're a collector ;-)

Or 12+ as ef - a tale on memories has an equivalent 18 rating in the states, but only got a 12 rating from the BBFC (episodes 1-6 got a PG rating).

In regards to importing, you could use www.up1.co.uk as they're UK based but stock region 1 DVDs.

Haganai will be easy to buy - the DVD cover looks really innocent.

Also, is it worth convincing dad to let me get the HotD set with the OAV or should I just get the regular version?

Well, for an extra £1 you may as well get the set with the OVA.
Except the OVA got an 18 rating, so convincing the parental unit to get the drifters of the dead set would be a lot harder.

The thing is though, Drifters of the Dead doesn't show any nipples so all you see is skin so it's not that bad in comparison to the HDxD Specials.

On the eBay image, the OVA set is shown as 15 (even though its an 18) so I could ask him to get it, leave it in the mail packaging, watch it and then say 'accualy is ayeten; dad pls'.
