What Music are you listening to? Discussions Welcome!

I think there are some really interesting parallels between this song and Fullmetal Alchemist, in addition to appreciating it for it's intended meaning :)

I have really been enjoying having Spotify Premium, they have so much great music on there and IMO the price is very reasonable for unlimited streaming access to pretty much any piece of commercial music you could want, compared to how video streaming services don't even come close to that if you pay like, 10 different ones :)

Started thinking recently about how little I know David Bowie’s output after Let’s Dance, so decided to try going through some of the later albums.

Never Let Me Down has a couple of good tracks (notably Time Will Crawl), but it’s so ridiculously over-produced that it becomes exhausting if you try to listen to it all in one sitting. It’s like every track has to be doing everything, all the time - very often the vocals are just lost in the crush. It’s kind of interesting that it came at a time when he’d been doing a lot of music for films, as it feels like you could stick any track from it into a popcorn blockbuster without it seeming out of place, but maybe that’s the problem - even aside from the production, it’s all just a bit safe and unchallenging.

Tonight, probably one of Bowie’s most maligned albums, was surprisingly passable, but it’s mostly made up of other people’s material and nothing about it seems especially memorable. Even the title track, with Tina Turner on guest vocals, is just a bit… whatever. If you told me it was a collection of b-sides from Let’s Dance, I’d have believed it.

Noticed this on the The Colors Within soundtrack:
Excellent cover/remix. Now if only they made a full 7:36 length version like the original instead of just a 1 and half minutes long.

A couple artists I've been listening to as of late.

RAT WARS remains to be one of the best albums I've ever experienced. A great mix of noise rock and electronic with catchy sounds and a pretty cyberpunk dark tone in the mix. Some will recognise their contribution to Cyberpunk 2077/Edgerunners and Rockstar's Max Payne 3 & GTA V, but the group have a new album this December which is considered a continuation to their last album. So far it's a banger.

What surprised me about The Devil Wears Prada was how much they had changed since they formed over a decade ago. One of the most well-known in the metalcore screamo scene has evolved into a solid alternative metal tone and their last album was surprisingly good. It's been a few years since then but these new singles have been pretty promising for their next album scheduled this November.

YouTuber turned rapper Quadeca is up there with Joji for being one of the few YouTubers to really hold out on their own in the music scene. His last album I Didn't Mean to Haunt You had an amazing style and tone which he's continued through to his new record that released last July. With the theme centred towards boats and fishing, each song is distinctly different in style. FORGONE is predominantly a piano piece but is up there as one of my favourite songs of the year and the final track is so good that it has led me to listen to Maruja. Speaking of which...

Maruja have been around for a while but they've started to become more well-known for their unique style. It's a blend of protest poetry lyrics with jazz influences throughout and while it may be jarring at first, it eventually works out surprisingly well and their predominantly long tracks are one of my favourites of the year. Pain to Power is a really strong album that just got released in September and I highly recommend them. A drum & jazz dual-solo here and there lifts the mood pretty well.

Low Roar will be more known nowadays for their heavy contribution to Death Stranding, but let's not forget this unfortunate final album that came about last January, as the vocalist sadly passed away a few years prior. What we have is a sombre and peaceful end to a really strong band and while it may feel incomplete or B-side-esque, the songs were great.

It's that time of year again:

Not sure how the age thing is done. I listened to plenty of much older songs, although all the artists that listened to their whole discography (see top artists + The Corrs) have albums from the last 10 years too.
The top album seems to be done on minutes and the top one just happens to be the longest (I try to only listen to an album once a year).
The club thing seems to be top (sub)genre(s), all the artists are from a psy-biant playlist which is the one I listen to most.
