I am a huge fan of fan service as long as its done as part of the story I hate it when it looks tagged on

But, why don't you just buy a lads magazine, lik Maxim or Nuts or something, instead of oogling animated girls?

Um because the otaku inme prefers animated to still images and if she aint a cartoon then i might as well stair at my girlfriends breasts

Okay, that didn't really make sense. There's plenty of pornography on the internet, if you want motion pictures. Do you watch anime because of the storylines, the art, the characters and the music or so you watch anime for abnormally large breasts?

I watch it for the story, animation, characters, music. I'm just saying that if there is fanservice included I have no problem with it, look at Air Gear brilliant anime, full of action and an amazing story but does have fan service moments included.

It can't be helped CitizenGeek if he likes sub-par anime series full of fan service from time to time. ;/

Um that was slightly uncalled for, especially from a fell GITS fan

I didn't say it to be mean, you said so yourself you enjoy them, there's need to feel anything against it, mayn. Besides it's not like you JUST watch that type of thing.

Fair enough. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I realise that I probably just don't like fanserivce because I'm gay, and women don't do it for me (d'uh). I'm sure that if there was fanservice involving good-looking male characters, I probably wouldn't mind either.

So, I guess, fanservice is probably okay in small doses. Although, I'm pretty certain I would not like series with gratuitous or regular fanservice, regardless of who said fanservice is catering to - series like Ikki Tousen would be an example.

Fan service is part and parcel with all tv shows and regardless of sexuality.

Video games are awful for it an example would be the Tomb Raider series a game built on fan service and mention towards Bloodrayne as well.

Have you ever watched a Coronation Street? I mean who in real life would let the daughter go to school exposing her cleavage? American and British shows are just as bad, if not worse it's not unique to Japan.

St. Trinians out now in cinemas I rest my case.

But it makes me wonder why Japan include fanservice to aim at a children market as well as Adult japanese citizens.

Maybe Children are more mature about it?

Comedy Ecchi Romance genres, sure.
Others, not so sure.
I watch Comedy and Romance ones the most, so seeing things like that does make me laugh.

That's a good point. There's "fanservice" in almost all TV shows. I suppose UK and American TV shows can be 'sexy' without being annoyingly childish. With anime, it's usually quite childish :[

You're painting a really bad picture for us Ikki Tousen fans, you know... XD

I enjoyed that story in the anime and the manga... it was great at the start, but resently, Yuji Shiozaki has just been doing page after page, scene after scene of fan service. With the manga, I take one look and turn the page (and get another shot), and it feels like the story's taking ages to move, and the whole thing has turned into a semi-porn mag.
I would love the story if it progressed, but it is stretching it's limits. And the anime is always a rushed end...

It's not the idea for Ikki Tousen that's bad, it's just the story's changed so much from simple bursting shirts to a regular bop-sessions, thinking the smut is better than the story quality. That's the impression I get anyways... Someone save our Tousen (And our other ecchi classics!)

I guess the main reason that people are more put off by fansevice in anime as opposed to live action shows is the fact that it's animated.

Perhaps, I still think it has a lot to do with the fact that anime fanservice is childish in how it's presented, while it actually fits in with US/UK TV series.

Check out Genshiken season 2 there is a whole episode of fanservice aimed at gay men and females

It's catering to that otaku demographic in Japan who really can't 'get any', so it doesn’t really matter if we in the west like it or not. The fanservice in those shows is equivalent to the fan service in western and it’s not really considered an issue; the only difference is that ours isn’t as over the top.

But to answer the question, I don’t like it, especially in GITS as it is totally out of context with the rest of the show.

I think you have got something here, with live action something may not be intentional and just show up because of a camra angle, but in animation it takes thought to place fan service as someone has to draw it to animate it.

Where's the option for middle-ground people?

Anyway, as long as there's not too much (I'm looking at you, Ikki Tousen), I'm perfectly happy with it.

Fanservice... well, When me and my friend watch a series and several panty shots appear in succession or proportionally incorrect boobs bounce on screen we laugh, raise our eyebrows and say "fanservice". I don't know, maybe it's cos we're girls, but it just looks pathetic and imature.
