What Games Are You Playing?

I have never been so annoyed playing a game before. Not because its difficult but because of muscle memory 😿😹😹😹

The N64 app on the switch assigns the right stock to the C buttons

What sounds like a good idea until you play Majora's Mask. Then everytime you feel like you want to move the camera. You instead use one of the C controls

Actually getting angry with it now 😹😹😹😹😹😹

First third of the year gone, have played a lot of games this year already, but in terms of new releases its been 5 so far. All pretty recent games played, or occasionally still jumping back into.

As a side note, I keep track that stuff on Backloggd, this being my account RaeDra's profile | Backloggd

Those are, in a order of sorts, lets say

5) Assassins Creed Shadows - Having stayed away from these games since after Syndicate, I thought it was time to try one of the newer games. Some of the things i've heard about the series progression had me worried because of what Valhalla was in its scope... so after playing this one to near completion in all things, I dread even contemplating playing that or even Odyssey or Origins. Though not a bad game, I did enjoy my time with it, but a rework long term is perhaps a good idea (the combat in particular feels increasingly not great). There's more to be added so ill check back in over time, but I think I got my taste for these games for now. The quality of the visuals, though, very nice definitely made the expensive PC investment worth it

4) Blue Prince - I have not finished this game, and I wish to revisit it again at some point. Part of that is because playing it on PC has some limitations that I think I would like it on a handheld (like, say, Switch 2 or something, would be nice) since its difficult to stop a run, if you need to be somewhere else, you can do that on the consoles though. I will also add that the design, narrative and random elements means my progression felt more frustrating at times than I would like, but I have pages of notes that I will be keeping for future usage. At its core though, a very interesting game, would like to return to it sooner, rather than later.

3) Atomfall - Maybe Rebellions most interesting game in a long while. A narrative survival game that the best parts of it is seeing the interactions of the various mysteries of the people and such within several areas you scavenge your way around and bump up against each system therein. Theres some jank for sure and I can't say I was particularly satisfied with how it wrapped up, but a interesting premise with some good stuff attached to it, somewhat immersive too.

2) Avowed - Suspect I liked this game more than quite a lot of folks, it is decidely not that special, but I really liked the combat in the game, alongside some of the world building. A lot of that is because it pulls so heavily from the Pillars of Eternity series, so that stuff is pretty well used. Its own narrative is a touch bland though. Its been said before but its a bit odd a game from Obsidian is received better for its combat, rather than its narrative, but here it is. Also, most games would be improved with a companion portrayed by Brandon Keener, no doubt in my mind.

1) Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 - This will probably be Game of the Year, to me anyway, unless theres something truly wild out there yet to come. It's... difficult to talk about the narrative of the game other than to say I found it to be extremely memorable, captivating and with truly excellent work in there. So much of the joy of the game is experiencing the narrative anyway so check it out if you are vaguely interested. The game itself being a turn based game with dodge, parry and other active systems and works really well. Its not without some issues (animation oddities, PC version both having lumen problems and being particularly crashy) but its been a while since I played something that stuck with me as much. Who knows whether it'll stick the landing in reception at the end of the year, but I fully expect it'll get its flowers for things like narrative, its soundtrack and some performance related character awards (for some of the cast, particularly Jennifer English as Maelle). It's certainly picked up some traction online for sales, pleasingly.

Sonic the Hedgehog (Sonic Origins) (Switch) (re-play)

Though not a bad game by any means and is the start of the series I adore so much this has always been my least favourite of the original four games and my opinion on that hasn't changed. Though, playing via the Anniversary Mode in Sonic Origins, the game does add the Spin Dash and Drop Dash which makes it a bit more enjoyable. I am still not a big fan of the Special Stages though which you need to beat to get the Good Ending.

Sonic CD (Sonic Origins) (Switch) (re-play)

Sonic CD has always been an odd game for me, I've always enjoyed it but it's not one I'm re-visiting often. It has been quite a few years since I've played this game though and I've actually come to like it a lot more with this re-play. This also marks the first time I've gotten the Good Ending as well for this game which there is two ways to obtain it. The first is to travel back in time and destroy Dr. Eggman's generators in every stage or alternatively collect all the Time Stones from the Special Stages which is what I opted for as I felt it was the simpler way (though also arguably more difficult in a sense that you need to reach the end of a stage with 50 rings minimum to access the Special Stages and some of the enemy placement in this game can destroy that in a instance).

Got 100% achievements on Rusty Rabbit - which was rather tricky to do as some of it came down to chance.

Have you enjoyed it overall? I played and quite liked the demo, but it doesn't really get into the meat of the gameplay in what little it gives you.

The gameplay was fine, but other aspects such as the voice-acting in the cut scenes dragged rather.

Sonic Colours Ultimate (PS4) (re-play)

Though this is my first time playing this remaster I played the original on Wii (as well as the DS version) a lot as a kid and though it's not the most outstanding Sonic game it is still a really solid title and it was nice to re-visit it.

On the remaster side of things I heard this wasn't great and I can agree on that. Though this has been patched for bugs such as the infamous visual glitches the remaster still has its issues which comes in the form of how it looks. There is way to much bloom and just isn't as visually appealing as the Wii original, just upscaling that to 1080p without the extra touches they made here would had sufficed IMO.

For the new gameplay content this remaster adds though we have the Jade Wisp, Metal Sonic rival races, customization (visual differences for Sonic and profile pictures which can be unlocked by finding medals in stages) and support from Tails (essentially replacing lives).

The latter two there isn't to much more else to add but for the other two new gameplay features, the Jade Wisp let's Sonic travel through walls if there is a point the Wisp can grab onto (think the blue stars in Super Mario Galaxy), this was a fun enough extra power-up but nothing overly exciting but doesn't harm the game either.

The second feature being Metal Sonic who wasn't present in the original game, these are simple races through a number of stages already present in the game, these are fun as you need to find the fastest route throughout the stage (which I enjoy doing anyway) but they were't much of a challenge but an enjoyable extra little feature.

I would had liked if they involved Metal Sonic in the main story though as that's one of the weaker points of this game and Metal Sonic could had added a little something to it but they did do a promotional animated short prior to release involving Metal Sonic and introducing the Jade Wisp so I guess that was there way of involving Metal Sonic somewhat in the story.

Ideally it would had been nice if they went all out and included features from the DS version as that had exclusive Wisps the console version didn't have as well as including the supporting cast of the Sonic series, albeit it in minor roles though as a fun fact, the DS version of Colours is the first time the characters Blaze and Silver meet since the memory wipe of Sonic '06.

It also included a true final boss being the Mother Wisp who isn't present in the console version and you got to fight her as Super Sonic who also isn't present in the console versions story (though is unlockable to play as). The Mother Wisp shows up again in Team Sonic Racing on the Planet Wisp track and with both her and Blaze and Silver's reintroduction to each-other as friends it makes the DS version canon to the Sonic series so that's why I would had liked if they combined the two versions.

Here's my April-May progress! Just one game but a worthy one.

#08 - Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (PlayStation 5)
Acquired: April 2025

When I first saw this game at the Xbox showcase, I was immediately intrigued by its visual style and the fact they went with a turn-based system which to me is rather uncommon nowadays when you see how a majority of games are more action driven. Since then I have kept my interest in the game but avoided all of the trailers and when the reviews came out, I immediately made the decision to pick it up at launch especially considering the price was £40 for this quality experience.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was developed by Sandfall Interactive, a French studio founded by a few former Ubisoft developers with a majority of newcomers to the video game industry and it does show on the final product because there's so much passion and love put into this project from the content to the story-telling and presentation. Considering they were inspired by Japanese RPGs, I say they have done an amazing job honouring the genre and it's so good that I cannot wait to see what they have in store next.

The story is about a group of expeditioners who are on a mission to traverse through a fractured world to stop the paintress, a being who is threatening the fate of humanity. And that is all you need to know because there's a lot going on with its story and I highly recommend going through the story with as little information as possible. What also supports the story has been the cast of characters and the performances which were really solid. We have Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Ben Starr (Final Fantasy XVI), Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings), Jennifer English (Baldur's Gate III) and more and they all do such a great job.

As mentioned, this is a turn-based RPG so when you go into combat you have to take turns. This game takes the system and adds more variety to make it accessible for those who prefer the action style gameplay. For example, you can shoot your opponents to knock their shield points down and also apply a mark which can add critical damage to them on the next turn. When you use an ability, a quick-time event will appear which upon succession will add extra damage to the opponents and they're very easy to manage. Each ability uses AP points which refill when you use a regular attack or the start of a battle, which I should mention is what makes this game really good for pacing as it avoids the challenge (or tediousness) of other JRPGs where in those games you need MP but can easily run out during your travels unless you find a save point or have items.

When the enemy has their turn, this is what makes this game stand out from others because you can in theory go through the entire game without taking any damage due to the dodge and parry mechanics. You can choose to dodge an enemy attack, or take the 'high risk, high reward' approach of parrying which upon successful hits can deal massive damage against your opponents which is very rewarding and necessary if you want to progress through many of the game's tough fights. Dodging is still fine but you may end up taking a lot longer defeating opponents in battles.

You can also customise your characters with various features. You can change their hairstyle and costumes which can be unlocked throughout your journey, whether its an item, buying them from a merchant, or defeating a specific boss fight or challenge. You can also use Lumina for increasing your Pictos abilities. Pictos is where you can apply an ability to a character and if you manage to fully maximise its capability other team-members can also use them at the same time. These abilities use up points, whether its 5, 10, 3, or 20 etc and the stronger the Pictos the higher the cost. There's tons available, including regaining HP/AP if you successfully dodge or parry, deal double damage but also take damage, a chance to immediately revive if you lose your HP during a fight and start the battle with tons of AP so you can immediately have access to higher cost abilities from the start. There's dozens of customisation available and you can build your party with as much freedom as possible.

You can also level up your character's stats based on Health, Damage, Speed, Critical Rate and Defense. I focused on Health, Damage and Defense but you will have opportunities where one skill stat may also build others which is handy. If you're not happy with your current build you can reset the stats with an item and I had dozens of that throughout my playthrough so there's room to make changes if needed.

Because of spoiler reasons I won't go over which characters I have kept using during my progress, but each of them are really cool and are all equal in terms of their capabilities in battle, so you won't feel dissatisfied if you are forced to use specific characters. If you are struggling with the difficulty, you can tone it down to Story focused if needed or keep Lune in your party for HP support. I have played through the whole game on Normal difficulty and while I have encountered a lot of tough battles, mostly from Chromium enemies who are more like post-game bosses, I felt that a vast majority of the defeats came from me not learning the right moment to parry so I kept going until I nailed it and eventually defeated them. There will be enemies that have tons of health so for those I hold off until I have better stats but in a lot of cases I am able to win the battle which rewards you with new weapons, pictos and costumes which is cool.

I haven't even gotten around to the world design because it's really good. You will have various areas with different themes to them and their own type of enemies, but the world map has this Fantasian style to it and you can walk around the place. You can also setup a camp to rest your team for a bit if needed and the game does warn you if an optional area is too dangerous for you to encounter which is good for making sure you don't get caught up by a surprise super-hard boss at a lower level.

The music is so good in this game. It's pretty much NieR level of quality and what's really surprising is that this is the first time the composer has worked on a major project given their previous music pieces were through SoundCloud and forums. The quality of the music is so good that every track nails the tone of the game and has a mixture of sad, happy and jazzy tunes to them. The music that plays during the world map is so good.

In terms of criticisms, the cutscenes can be pretty low quality of times in terms of its resolution so it looks like they optimised it to reduce file size. And the final portion of the game can make you super overpowered if you decide to deviate from the story early on so I recommend you focus on the story and then enjoy the post-game content afterwards because there's tons of very interesting lore throughout the game.

Speaking of which, the collectibles are really solid. You can find journals that explain more about what has happened to the world prior to your current expedition team, and there's also extra areas that offer additional story which is rewarding and offers some pretty cool boss fights. The trophies in this game are well done and there are some missable ones in the prologue (fighting a Mine and grabbing a key that unlocks a gate later down the line) but everything else can be obtained without issue and I managed to get the Platinum trophy which isn't exactly an easy feat considering there are some pretty challenging boss fights. I spent 49 hours 27 minutes pretty much 100% the game in its entirety and I loved every moment of it, it was pretty much the same feeling I had with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth but half the time needed.

So yes, I do highly recommend the game and I'm hoping it wins Game of the Year because its such an achievement for a small independent studio to create and to me, sends a message to the gaming industry that you can create high quality games for low prices and with no interference from those who just want big massive live service projects.

Yeah I did. The first part was doable but the second part I cheesed (every other boss I was able to defeat without issue) because the hidden sword was ruining the flow for me. I relied on the Roulette Pictos which allowed for extreme damage. Great music though.

Finished up the main the story for New Vegas and its DLC and am now playing Fallout 4 and its DLC in the run up to the Switch 2 launch in June.
Finished Fallout 4 today and it’s easily the weakest of the three entries I’ve played - some interesting themes and ideas and Nick Valentine is amazing but I found it lacked some of the depth and charm of its predecessors. The settlement building also did nothing for me and the DLC was a mixed bag - Far Harbor was solid though.

I’m now in a sort of limbo as to whether I play through a shorter game or take a break until my NSW2 arrives.

Ninja Gaiden (NES via Switch)

This is a great, classic, action-platformer for the NES though quite brutal at times. If it wasn't for the save state and rewind features of NSO I definitely would had not beaten this game and likely would had enjoyed it much less. I'm glad to have beaten my first Ninja Gaiden game though, especially with the two new titles releasing soon. It's a shame NG 2 and 3 aren't on NSO though but I have the 3D trilogy to play (plus 2 Black) on PS4 and PS5.

EDIT: I somehow completely forgot I played and beat Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge way back on the Wii U so this wasn't the first NG I've beaten.

Oh man, you've reminded me about the time I reached the end credits of Ninja Gaiden on my NES Mini by mercilessly save-stating the living daylights out of it. 😅

That console has no rewind feature, so I seem to remember creating a new save state after each individual successful hit against the final boss in whichever one of its phases it was — and it was still difficult!

Around the same time (early 2021?), I played Mega Man 2 through to the end on its easier "Normal" mode with heavy use of save states as well. These days I can finish Mega Man 2 on "Difficult" mode without save states just fine and yet still wouldn't even dare to attempt Ninja Gaiden again. It's that hard. 😬

(The rewind feature on NSO's really neat, isn't it?)

I’ve been revisiting The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild courtesy of the Nintendo Switch 2 edition and it’s the same game I fell in love with back in 2017, but now with a buttery smooth 60fps, quicker load times and improved graphics.

After spending the first four months of the year obsessing over Railway Empire and Stardew Valley, I'm now running a country pub in Traveller's Rest. And it's cutting into my anime watching time something shocking!

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
I tend to feel a sense of dread when a game is described as being "inspired by classic JRPGs" because few modern developers seem to understand what made the best JRPGs of the 90s into classics. Games that self-describe that way often end up being tedious slogs bloated by dozens of hours of grinding, featuring off-the-peg sterotype characters on a generic quest to save a generic medieval fantasy world from a generic ancient evil. Thankfully Expedition 33 has none of those problems. Sandfall Interactive understand what really made the best JRPGs of the 90s into classics: engaging characters, worlds that feel alive and are a joy to explore, inventive battle systems, and emotional stories that feel epic without outstaying their welcome. They not only understand this; they had the talent to put it into practice.

One of the most impressive aspects is how it deftly avoids the common pitfall of stories where a group of characters are trying to prevent the end of the world. All too often a story of that type can see its characters getting lost in the vast scope of the events happening around them, becoming little more than an odd-jobs crew whose final task just ends up being "save the world". Expedition 33 instead interweaves its story of impending human extinction with the personal apocalypses that each character experiences in their grief as events unfold. Grief and the carnage it leaves in its wake are the defining forces at work in this story. It's impressive how well it manages to tie everything back to its central themes, even the quirkier elements that may seem like Kojima-style affectations at first. It all builds towards a powerful climax that presented me with the most harrowing choice I've needed to make in a game since the original Life is Strange.

Then there's the battle system. I've seen it compared to Mario RPG with its mix of turn-based commands and timed button presses, but in practice it's closer to a soulslike where you need to react to (or memorise) the tells of enemy wind-up animations. It's a surprisingly skill-based system for a turn-based RPG, since any attack in the game can be negated through one of various types of dodges or parries. It's always evolving too. Each new character in your paty plays in a fundamentally different way from the last, with a near bewildering number of options for customising the abilities and move-set. It never gets old over the course of the game's 30-hour main story.

It's all backed up by exploration through varied locations in a world that's often breathtakingly beautiful, accompanied by gorgeous music. The result is a masterpiece of a calibre that we only see a handful of times per console generation. I will be surprised if anything tops it for my Game of the Year pick by December.

I have suddenly realised that the game I want to play is running a hot spring like the one in Spirited Away in a similar format to Stardew Valley or Travelers Rest, so if someone out there cound develop it for me....

Also, I’ve checked out CSGOEmpire - Official Website in the UK recently — the layout feels just as streamlined as its counterparts, and it runs without hiccups. Everything from browsing skins to exploring features is straightforward, making it easy to dive right in and see what’s on offer. It’s a solid option if you want a hassle-free platform.

Here's my June progress! Mainly focused on anime for this month but I did check out a few. Death Stranding 2 is next in the gaming backlog so stay tuned on that.

#09 - Mario Kart World (Nintendo Switch 2)
Acquired: June 2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 is finally here and of course like many others who picked up the console I also went for the bundle because it was much cheaper than its physical counterpart. Now this completion is a bit different to the other games in my gaming completion list because technically speaking this game isn't 100% done, but I'm at a point where I felt I've done as much as I can with the options and time available.

Mario Kart World is the latest iteration in the racing franchise and I've played about under half of the games released, primarily Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart Wii and bits of Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart: Double Dash. The one that I've spent the most hours was definitely the DS version as it was at the time the killer-app of sorts for the DS platform. And while I own Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Switch, I haven't properly played it so this is technically a jump from Wii to Switch 2 for me and it's an interesting experience for the most part.

Mario Kart World changes the formula up by going with a world setting so its similar to Burnout Paradise in a way and the Grand Prix starts off with the traditional three-lap formula before having every other map switch it up to a Point A to B approach which is both a benefit and a detriment to the game. It's good to introduce a new style to racing these tracks but at the same time it also felt a bit too padded and over stayed its welcome as I played through them. It's also very spacious so the tracks aren't as busy especially when you're so far ahead in first place. This would work for online multiplayer where you're playing against dozens of people but it does feel like single player was an afterthought here.

That said the race tracks themselves despite the Point A to B approach all look great, but I hate the water levels as they're not particularly fun to playthrough. The graphics look great and the gameplay is pretty easy to jump back on. The addition of the Knockout mode is a great idea and this does somewhat work much better with the Point A to B format but it would be nice if the game provided an option to switch back to the traditional three-lap approach. It's okay to change things up but if it ain't broken don't fix or change it and I think that's what's happened here. I suppose the general point is stick to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or the older games if you want the traditional style and stick to Mario Kart World if you want something completely different.

Switching up the negatively, I did play through various characters and they're all pretty fun to control as well as the various vehicles in both car and bike formats. The jump mechanic is pretty fun and rewarding hopping around parts of the wall and I love how you can unlock more characters and costumes as you progress through the game especially with the Yoshi drive-throughs. The game offers a Free Roam area and that has its own challenges and such but I didn't find much motivation to commit a lot of time for it.

Now for added context, I don't have Nintendo Switch Online so I can't play the online multiplayer and why I haven't bought it is because I have such a large PlayStation backlog that I don't want to purchase another subscription if I'm not going to use it much.

Overall I do think Mario Kart World is a well-designed game but it does take a step back on removing the traditional lap racing in favour of the newer ones (though you can race them in time trials but that's not fun at all). Many have said the game isn't worth the £74.99 ($79.99) price point and I do agree on that for now. If Nintendo decides to offer free expansions throughout the course of the new console generation then I may say yes, but my advice would be to go for the bundle before it expires later this year if you want to play it sooner than later.

#9.5 - Nioh 3 Alpha Demo (PlayStation 5)
Downloaded: June 2025 (expired 19th June)

With the surprise reveal at the PlayStation State of Play, I wanted to take the opportunity to check out the Alpha demo release for Nioh 3 and beat it before the demo expired. I am a big fan of the first two Nioh games and while I didn't go for the DLC expansions due to the high difficulty requirement, I was happy to check out any new instalments when they come along.

Nioh 3 changes up the gameplay with a few key differences. You now have control over two class types; a samurai and a ninja, which brings some interesting combos and dynamics during your journey throughout the world of Nioh. The other big change is the level design is now open-world which gives you freedom to explore the area, check out various mini-bosses and even some side quests to help unlock more items to improve your build.

I had a go with various weapons as I progressed but I settled on the usual samurai sword and any of the ninja weapons as they were pretty cool to use. The ninja class is great for getting yourself out of some pretty nasty situations while the samurai class is there to deal the big damage against the demons. You can also parry against the red glowing enemies which automatically changes to the other class which is pretty neat (in Nioh 2 successful parries starts the Oni form). You can use talismans, summon enemies or call for allies to help with the boss battles.

The boss battles themselves were pretty fun and take a while to get used to their moves and surpass them. One of the toughest fights that I had to deal with was due to bad spawn placement and that's the Bloodedge Demon which is achieved by defeating various people (other players who died due to being defeated by an enemy or boss) who you can summon to defeat throughout the game. This boss is a pain but it's more painful when you need to clear out the enemies around it because they'll get in the way, and one enemy in particular is a leech that just won't go away. The leech enemies have too much health and can deal a lot of damage.

In terms of progression I managed to finish the story chapter for the game and was quite the achievement. The demo took me about 8 hours to complete it and that's a lot of content for an alpha demo. The framerate is not perfect but I expect they'll fix this in the final build. Overall I was really happy with the demo and look forward to playing the final version when it releases next year.
