World End Syndrome

uCp9uFYmcMXdGB7qaqfC4MgSgB3Zka8A.jpeg

This game has pretty much been backlogged since launch. Haven't played through a VN for lord knows how long but decided to give it a shot.

Well gotta say, I almost dropped this game as the first three routes hadn't been what I'd expect from the lore of World End. For me the emphasis on romance, minor personal problems and daddy issues had me lost as I had expected a Physiological Mystery and Horror vibe.

Boy I was so wrong. Once you get to the fourth route onwards, that's where the core of game truly awaits. Many tense situations and the characters who seemed friendly reveal their real colours once you begin to delve too deep into the mysteries.

The Final route + "Truth Chapter" had been absolutely wild and tragic. The twists really has you hooked and you'll be unable to drop out until you've reached the end of these parts.

What's even crazier is that even though the main story felt pretty wrapped up. The epilogue is tearing into you that these events are only the beginning for the worst to come.

That is to say...

The upcoming sequel World End Phenomenon.

Verdict: Although not a must have VN, it is definitely worth looking into as the story (though slow in the beginning), character design, art, background and soundtrack is amazing to witness. Especially playing on Nintendo Switch feels great on the go.

Rating: 7/10 - GOOD

Are the routes linear? In that there's only one way through them. And are they all very different? I often cant be bothered to play to every ending of a VN as so much is similar but sounds like this one might be worth checking out?

I believe only the prologue is linear for the first run and "Truth Chapter". Once you complete the prologue, you'll have an option to choose a different dialogue choice which changes the outcome to set up the main game.

The five character routes are where the branches start to divide and the ending are unique to each heroine. For each route, If you fail to spend time with or select an undesired dialogue option on a heroine's route. This will set you on a path to a bad end. You need to build a sufficient relationship with the heroine before the deadline.

However despite being locked into a character route, you still have the freedom to interact with the rest of the cast and complete tasks to expand on the lore/myths of the in-game town.

There are a total of 7 routes to go through.

  • prologue [partially linear]
  • 5 Character routes (first 2 are available whereas others are progress related)
  • Truth Chapter [linear]
My explanation may have been somewhat weak but is the best I can do without dragging on 😅

I have completed Tales of Arise. Another epic story to add to the Tales universe. Berseria used to be my favourite but now Arise has taken its place easily. I'll admit i didn't take to the characters straight away but they grew on me as the story progressed and now they are my favourite cast of characters.

I recently played through Cyberpunk 2077 and found the experience to be frustrating at times due to the crashes and bugs that are sadly still prevalent.

That said the story itself was decent and takes some dark turns, though I found the side content to be lacking depth and feeling repetitious in what it required of the player, which is a shame as the game has some nice lore scattered around the world.

I’m now looking to play through Lost Judgment, and have also picked up the season pass.

Been playing too much, finishing too little for awhile now. Did finally manage to finish F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch, an excellent rabbit-furry metroidvania funded by China monies; to the extent doesn't look or feel like an indie. Very combat-centric, similar to Guacamelee. Not quite as good as Ender Lillies, a recent Daughtervania, but it's up there with the best in the genre.

Have Ghost of Tsushima DC on the go, very slowly. Replaying it on PS5 since it's my favu PS4 game.
Tales of Arise is also going slowly, given a poor/uninspired star--only Shinome's bitchiness, owls and the combat holding much appeal. The story bosses are ********, and difficulty unbalanced depending if normal encounter, optional mini-boss or story boss. Still, I am getting into it more, now in demo area with full party. No Magilou though, so -2.
Eastward is pixel art porn, with an amazing soundtrack, loveable heroine, mongable gameplay.... and a looooooooooot of waffle. 30-40m start of each chapter. NPCs get in way. Influenced by so many things I like can mostly overlook though.
Kena is like if Ghibli and Pixar had a rather bland baby. It's God of WarxHorizon. Competent but little originality.

Oh, and will be starting Judgment 2.

PS: @Dai, Days Mongo starts at its worst. Granted, it's very much a competent experience rather than a great one but I did gradually build some affection for the protag, ignoring fact I have now forgot his name. Once you reach the 2nd large town with a potential girlfriend character, it's not quite so... bleugh That and start encountering zombie hordes. I'd only rate it 6-7/10, though, the end is as weak as always is in zombie survival fiction, as TLoU2 illustrated.

After going through a big batch of games during the month of August, September takes a step back in favour of finishing off the Summer 2021 anime simulcasts. That being said I did go through one lengthy game at the beginning of the month, one that has been in my backlog since early 2017.

Completed Game #27: Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1 (Vita)

Hyperdimension Neptunia was one of the first games I played on the PlayStation 3. It had a great cast of characters, a neat concept and also a messy battle system. Fortunately the franchise did well enough to have sequels that revamped the battle system for the better. Not long after, the trilogy was remade for PlayStation Vita (and later released on PC) and while I bought the first game back in February 2017, I didn't start the game until late last month - which is about 4 years 6 months later...

Neptunia is a turn-based RPG with a large roster of characters, but only three at max can tag along during battles (though you can swap for another character for each individual so it's technically 6). The battle system is split into different areas, starting off with the Attack approach which gives you three methods; Rush, Power & Break, with 3 hit combos (you can mix and match between the three). Rush is good for increasing the speed of the EXE Gauge, Power is for strong damage attacks, and Break is to reduce the enemy's guard so that you can do more damage once it breaks. Once the EXE Gauge reaches a Level you can unlock a fourth combo that does extra damage, so the higher the EXE level the better. This approach is a vast improvement over the original which was quite hard to follow and a bit overly-convoluted.

Alongside the main Attack option, the battle also offers SP special which can help heal your team, add buffs & debuffs, and also do super attacks against one or multiple enemies. For Neptune, Noire, Vert & Blanc, these four also have the option to activate HDD which gives them extra attack power. You can also select Items in case you run out of SP and Defend yourself or try to Escape the battle if the scenario escalates. Again these are also improvements over the original battle system which was initially dependent on luck rather than being able to immediately use the items or special moves.

The battles overall can take seconds to a fair while depending on which enemy you're up against. In each dungeon, a majority of the enemies are pretty easy to fight unless they go into Viral mode which can increase the difficulty. There are also large 'tough' enemies that can overwhelm you if you are under-levelled but the good news is that they won't chase after you if you are close so you can literally walk past them without initiating a battle.

Then we have the boss battles which leads to my biggest issue with the game - the difficulty. Long story short, the difficulty ramps up by a lot compared to the regular enemies which ruins the pace of the game. The best way to describe this is if you're Level 20 and you can deal with fighting enemies that are around Level 18-22, but then you fight the boss who is Level 30 for whatever reason and easily defeats you even if you have the most updated equipment. This to me, is the game's biggest flaw in general because it ruins the pace and can often become unfun depending on the circumstances. The only way to fix this is the generic RPG approach of level grinding, which is unfortunate considering the battle system is very fun to use, and while you can suggest that spacing out your team is a key aspect to defeating high level enemies, the amount of damage they can do (and sometimes even heal more than the damage they take) will still cause problems.

Outside of battles, the game also has a Share system where each nation has a percentage of shares that will determine which of the two endings you will encounter (Normal or True). The True ending requires each nation having 20% shares and the enemy nation having 0% which is pretty easy to achieve. Shares can be achieved by defeating enemies in the Coliseum and going on Quests by fulfilling criteria like finding materials or defeating specific enemies. These will offer 1-5% shares for a nation, but in return can result in a decrease of shares for another so it's all about balance.

On the world map, you also have little message pop-ups which can give you new plans to make items, weapons and dungeons. This where Re;Birth's new features come in but its easily missable if you don't pay extra attention. The Remake system is a brand new addition to the game that lets you create new dungeons, new items, new game modifications and more after fulfilling certain criteria in terms of specific item drops from dungeons. When you create a dungeon, you'll want to visit them at least once so that you can unlock additional plans that adds more enemies and changes the item drops for those dungeons. The game modifications include weakening or strengthening enemies, more credits, more EXP, increase in the EXE Gauge and more.

You can also use the Remake system to unlock Nepgear, Uni, Rom and Ram, characters from the second Neptunia game, for the character roster but they each require 30% nation shares to unlock the plan followed by 50% shares, 1024MB of Remake System space and an specific item from one of the dungeons near the end of the game. The Remake system does have a limitation to avoid breaking the game entirely, which is about 2000-3000MB you can use at max. Fortunately, the plans you create in the first playthrough will carry over into New Game+ with the MB space reset so you can keep your pre-existing creations and make more in return.

As for the story, it's pretty much the same structure as the original with added characters to the mix. The franchise is a homage and parody of the video game industry with Neptune based on SEGA's unreleased Neptune console, Noire based on Sony's PlayStation, Vert based on Microsoft's Xbox, and Blanc based on Nintendo. The other characters include Compa (Compile Heart), IF (Idea Factory), MAGES. (searching for that Dr Pepper), Falcom (basically female Adol), Tekken (yes that Tekken), CyberConnect2 (designed like a dot hack character), MarvelousAQL (as busty as Senran Kagura), and Broccoli (not the vegetable, but the actual company who made Di Gi Charat). For those curious, Nepgear (Neptune's younger sister) represents SEGA's portable console devices, Uni (Noire's younger sister) represents Sony's PlayStation PSP/Vita devices, and Rom and Ram (Blanc's younger sisters) represent Nintendo's DS handhelds. Because Xbox is mostly console-based, Vert doesn't have a younger sister. Also NISA and Gust characters from the original do not appear in Re;Birth.

While the original PlayStation 3 version has a recycled battle system and assets from Cross Edge and Trinity Universe, two previous cross-over games from one or more similar developers/publishers oddly enough, the seriousness of the original isn't carried over into the Re;Birth version so it's more light-hearted than before. In terms of the story progression, there are 8 chapters in total and took me about 28 hours to complete alongside the preparations for other completion-based tasks like acquiring more dungeons, receiving the plans for unlocking additional characters, and levelling up the team to defeat the bosses. Once I finished the first playthrough, an additional 11 hours was spent getting everyone to Level 99 and acquiring 100 million credits for the Platinum trophy.

Regarding the 100 Million credits trophy, because I own a physical copy via the North American release (Europe was digital only), I had to take the long approach by fighting the Clione enemy which offers 322,000 credits with the Credits Up plans in place. It is a tedious journey but was much faster than I had expected as it took about 500 minutes to sort out. Fortunately since its accumulative, you only need to reach 50 million credits as you can then use the credits to buy and sell expensive items to reach the number faster. If you do have access to the DLC, that approach is much quicker due to receiving more credits by defeating an enemy in one of the Coliseum battles though it will require additional levelling up I believe.

Overall, aside from the frustrating difficulty spikes for the boss battles, Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1 is a very enjoyable game and a massive improvement to the original PlayStation 3 release. The game has been released on PC with 60fps support, and there is a PlayStation 5 version now available called Neptunia ReVerse that I recommend for newcomers if they want the definitive release (it also has 60fps and allows you to have 4 characters during battles instead of 3 which makes a very big difference). Neptunia ReVerse also has a different trophy list which I believe is way easier to achieve compared to the PS3 & Vita versions.

I back to Trove - it's a really nice game (old, but great)
In the evening, I run the Flux program, which dims the screen and makes it easier to fall asleep. Because the currency in Trove is flux, almost every evening I want to turn on Flux - I accidentally run Trove ^^
The best thing you can do to have a good time and have a nice (in a good atmosphere) visit Odealo and check what they have in their assortment (for example flux)
However, if you have decided for a better game, I recommend that you buy a flux for Trove
buy flux

I finished Life is Strange: True Colors - definitely my favourite LiS game! The locations weren't as varied as in the other games in the series, but I think it really had the best cast of characters including the main character). The story never dragged and I was really happy with how the story turned out for me.

Now I've started on Dating Life: Miley X Emily - it's OK so far, I guess. It's a standard Ratalaika/Gamuzumi-type visual novel (pretty cheap, basic and not very long). It would be nice if the font size was bigger and in a sans serif font, but never mind.

After having it collect dust on my shelf for years due to busy schedules, I finally got to play & complete Nier:Automata with endings A to E. For me, one word is all that is needed to to describe every aspect of this masterpiece: Beautiful.

Despite its individual components not all being 10/10 if you break them down, the end result is that it is probably the best game I've ever played. It is also deserving of a very fitting line from within it about how beautiful this world can be, and how it is easy to miss that when caught up in life's trials & tribulations.

Probably also the only time I've ordered a soundtrack from a game but this one's is utterly gorgeous.

It's late and I don't feel like writing something articulate so I'll just say the tracks for the desert and the forest kingdom are like, all time greats. The track when fighting the twins is incredible.

The track for the robot village legit gets me misty eyed.

9S's descent into madness is despair inducing.

The title drop is legendary.

If you've played the original, the returning characters feel great to see.

I'll defend the hacking minigame until the end of time.

And I was lucky to get the bonus cd with the OST that came with the hacking versions of the soundtrack. Love this game to bits. Love the original and I'm very fond of Drakengard, even if it's really not a good game.

I try to think of which tracks I like the most and inevitably keep picking half of them for that! Favourites probably vary within Copied City, City of Ruins (especially the Shade variant) and Peaceful Sleep, but really the whole soundtrack is beautiful.

In terms of gameplay, I think it's a beautiful homage to so many styles of arcade games including the top down "fighter plane" combat as well as original GTA views for action, the side scrolling platformer scenes and of course the hacking games. I love the variety they all provide.

This is my first foray into this series, even though I have the original Nier also collecting dust on my shelf. Think I'll go to the newer Nier replicant next. Was looking at the drakengard series and wished I'd bought the first two when they were reasonable priced on cex in the last year or two, but now the prices are just extortionate. Did get the third drakengard off of Amazon at a reasonable price. Hey ho, now to find the time to play them (and hopefully get the original two if they become cheaper).

True, Okabe/Monaca outdid themselves. I think it's even better than Replicant's (never thought I'd say this before, after finishing and thinking on Automata).

Changing perspectives is another trademark for sure and it's always welcome. There's a genre change in the first one that will have you smirking real quick!

I knew I preferred Replicant immediately after finishing Automata, but now that I think so fondly about it, I'm not sure anymore. I gotta finish the replicant remaster myself, didn't even do the first route.

As for Drakengard, it's unrelenting in its misery. Not sure if it has to do with where Taro was in life at the point or just the kind of story and characters he wanted to depict but it's very misanthropic. Don't get me wrong, I'm willem_dafoe_you_know_im_something_of_a_misanthrope_myself.tiff, but that game really goes in. It has some atrocious stuff but thinking back on it, it's almost refreshing seeing that kind of subject matter in a game.

Anyway, the dragon parts are OK, the ground parts are... not so much. But you should play it if you ever have the opportunity.

Drakengard 2 is not Taro's baby and so gets a bad reputation on the internet, but I'll always defend it for the beautiful conclusion it gave the main romantic pairing. It's unforgettable. The OST is good with a couple tracks that are mindblowing.

Drakengard 3, I honestly don't remember much, aside from the (very funny) sexual innuendo. Seeing an old man go on about his "vigourous rod" or some such never got old. It felt like it broadened the lore and background of the world quite a bit, but now my ps3 is dead and so I won't be able to retry it anytime soon.

I know Taro did that thing he did for D1's final ending (WHICH I COMPLETED) but didn't this time around. Adults don't have the same patience as kids, I guess.

Anyway, sorry for the rambling, hopefully this gets me in the mood to finish remaster Replicant this time.

Heh I certainly know what you mean and the lack of patience generally seems to stem from the lack of time from adult responsibilities: booooo!

Very helpful to have your opinions on the series, definitely makes me want to play them all as possible, and my interest is certainly piqued for the first Drakengard now (not sure what you're reference to the final ending is but I'll keep it that way in the hope I can play it sometime)! Was aware of its gameplay not being all that which is fine as what I really wanted to experience was the story and Automata just confirmed I love this guy's style. Good to hear you have such fondness for Replicant & its social soundtrack - will help fill the hole after I've done another play through of Automata (and here I was thinking I would be able to start Persona 5 finally hah!).

I got the free PS5 upgrade for Final Fantasy VII Remake and it was just as great playing it a second time. If anything, I think it helped knowing the weird direction it goes at the end, and that aspect of it worked better for me this time. Also, this was already an amazing looking game on PS4, but the subtle improvements on PS5 push it to higher quality than Advent Children in some ways, which is just insane.

I also bought the Episode INTERmission DLC where you play as Yuffie. They did a great job of making her combat style feel like a ninja while retaining her playful immaturity. It's a solid expansion that took me about 7.5 hours including all the optional stuff. I was particularly surprised that I enjoyed the new version of the Fort Condor mini-game, since I always dread the boredom of that part in the original. It's been redesigned to flow faster, though weirdly you can't issue direct commands to units anymore.

I 100% finished Re:Zero - Starting Life In Another World: The Prophecy Of The Throne on PS4

Next up on the PS4 is another visit to Nier:Automata. I finished the first route but never did the rest so I think it's time to complete the game fully.

I went back to Life is Strange: True Colors and played through the rest of it. It's an excellent, heart-felt story that presents some choices that really had me worrying about the potential consequences, but everything built to a satisfying resolution. The recent patches for the PS5 version have smoothed out the framerate issues and fixed the more noticeable bugs, making for a much more polished experience.
