Viewster Announce Premium Service

I'm curious to see how many people have managed to reach 20 sign-ups for this whole Omakase service. It's pretty tough, I got 350 clicks but only 11 have signed up. I wouldn't call it a flaw but it's quite unfair for some. Heck I would have had a better chance if the links were working properly when it first started, I guess first come first serve is the key to these kinds of competitions.
It's kind of an odd idea in general really, everyone that subscribes through your link also becomes your competition since they'll have their own link and will want to get 20 sign ups. It's better for Viewster since they'd have more sign ups and less prizes to give out, I suppose.

They could probably do with having more information on the link too, rather than having people give out their e-mail (which people might hesitate to do, there's not even a box to say "don't send me spam" or a note to say they won't).

I don't think I'd be interested in random merchandise either. I can't imagine it really working in the long run, surely you'd lose people who get fed up with getting things they're not interested in and it'd be tough to replace them in an already niche interest.

I don't even see why they feel they need a gimmick to draw people in, they seemed to be doing okay by getting content that people want and I'm pretty sure plenty of people would be willing to sign up for ad-free and HD (where possible) content. I can't help feeling they could undermine their own good work by spending too much on something silly and then not being able to become a real competitor as they seemed to be moving towards.

Who knows though, maybe it'll turn out to be a great service above what everyone expected and it'll do really well for them.

I agree that they need to be more clear about what you're signing up for on the landing page. I am doing well on click-throughs but poorly on actual sign-ups. While I don't really care as I don't want the box anyway, it shows that there's interest in the idea of Omakase but people are dropping off before signing up for themselves. Well, I guess Viewster will use both sets of figures in calculating their overall strategy and the only people who lose out are the referrers.

Personally I'm extremely interested in the service and don't care for physical bonus goodies. I can see why they would want to offer it at launch since they want to stand out in a world where Netflix and Crunchyroll have the market stitched up to most people, but as Viewster has a ton of content nobody else is offering I think they have what it takes to attract customers without any flashy gimmicks on top. If they offered an Omakase subscription without the boxes alongside the premium one I'd still pay to lose those stupid makeup ads which get in the way of ogling Daryuun each week.

R, who signed up with Grav's link then immediately became a rival, proving Smeelia's point

But that's stupid, as far as I can tell, they don't have Kill la Kill for anywhere. Unless this is a spectacularly underwhelming announcement that they now have streaming rights for Kill la Kill.

Also, WHO THE HELL WANTS A GOLD PLATED MANGA ADAPTATION OF KILL LA KILL? I could understand including the volume, but what's with the gold plating. From what I've seen, gold plating has no relevance to Kill la Kill whatsoever, and it probably just makes the volume tacky and heavy.

Well collectors might feel they got something extra if the omakase version of Kill la Kill has a variant cover instead of duplicating something they could already have. I'm not sure a market actually exists in the west for manga with fancy covers (it's hard enough getting hold of normal versions when they go out of print!) but you never know.

I suspect that to some extent, the stuff in the box is influenced by what they can get their partners to give them. Viewster may not be promoting Kill la Kill right now but if the manga publisher is, that's what they are going to be offered - and it doesn't hurt to grab attention by parading a load of schoolgirls with swords and jiggly boobs around on the promotional materials.

I see the trend of overestimating Kill La Kill's value continues unabated.

I'm not saying it's a bad show, just that a gold plated manga volume is the epitome of useless crap.

But I'd imagine one of the reasons Kill la Kill gets used a lot is because it's an anime original, with Aniplex seemingly retaining most of the rights. It's probably far easier (and perhaps cheaper) to clear Kill la Kill than it is many other similarly popular projects based on manga or created by artists with their own production studios.

You probably won't see Tokyo Ghoul popping up all over the place, because from what I've heard, Sui Ishida likes to approve absolutely everything and as a result the series is a bit of a hassle to clear stuff for. My guess is the Kill la Kill team are relatively easy-going and consequently the series is easier to work with.

Oh, no worries there, Buzz. I knew what you were getting at.

I do find it a bit irritating when a property gets pushed like that. I've yet to see anything that makes me personally want to throw my money at Kill La Kill, so I share the confusion as to why a gold leaf manga would be a desirable object.

The initial launch, with the two-month subscription priced at $25 plus shipping and handling, will be for customers in the U.S., Canada, and the United Kingdom.
So call it $12, and from my arse, say it's roughly that in GBP because of P&P.

That's....not great for a VOD on account of you getting chackhis that you really don't want.

Eh. I'm not paying $25 every 2 months for pointless crap I'm 99% likely to have no interest in and which will just take up space. I just want a premium video service. So it's a no from me.

I can't say I've kept up with all the details but has it been confirmed that to get the HD video you'll also have to get the physical goods?

I wonder if they'll have options for one, the other or both. I'd certainly hope so and if not it'd be nice if people could register their interest to say they want one thing but not the other.

Some of what I've read would seem to suggest the plan is to have different options but I could be wrong.

Everything I've heard is just people hoping for a physical-free option, nothing from Viewster actually confirms this will exist.
