UK Anime Blu-ray & DVD Bargains

Giovanni's Island Ultimate Edition is £34.70 on Amazon right now - which is probably the lowest it will go given an SRP of£54.99 but definitely worth grabbing at that price! Contains both DVD + BD versions of the film and a 96 page book (18.1cm x 21cm) packed with historical data on the background of the film prepared by Production I.G.

TL;DR - If you want the Ultimate - now's a good time to buy!

I pre-ordered mine from Amazon a while ago and was going to cancel it because of this price, but apparently when I pre-ordered it it was £34.05, so I still got a better deal :p

I'm tempted by the Monogatari's. I have the first Part of Bakemonogatari on Blu-Ray.

I wasn't a huge fan of the first few episodes. Seemed really cheesy and more of a harem with the characters that seem to get introduced later on. (PS: I do not like harem's or overly stereotypical characters. - It's why I'm put off by Toradora too)

Would anyone recommend I continue? Based on my enjoyment of Lodoss, Slayers, Utena, etc?

In my opinion, Monogatari is more of a self-aware parody of a harem than anything else. If you take it seriously as a straight harem show, it's weak unless you happen to like the girls, but if you treat it as social commentary it's more interesting (especially if you like gags which play with the Japanese language and lots of strange fan service). It deliberately includes as many stereotypical harem elements as possible just so that it can mess around with them.

If you don't like the characters from the first arc you may find a few of the later ones more palatable.

I like all of your favourites for what it's worth, but then I think anyone with good taste does :D

It definitely plays with some of the conventions of the harem genre - and some of the fanservice is pretty racey - but largely I've always taken the series first and foremost as a literary/philosophical take on modern life. It messes with your mind, both visually, and verbally.

I've seen some people say you should watch it with a remote in hand and pause to read every title card that flashes up - though personally I prefer just to sit back and enjoy the verbal sparring.

It's also probably one of the most visually distinct shows out there - if you're a fan of modern/abstract art/design/architecture then it's a must-see.

This was on my to buy list a while ago but I removed it. Is it good and worth a watch?

I'd say it's very much just ok. Nothing particularly great about it. I'd bought it on release and was a little disappointed honestly.

To be fair, I watched it with my sister and she loved it. I think for me I'd read what it was about and imagined it differently. Character designs are very pretty. Definitely watchable and worth the DOTW, but not the best thing I've ever seen.

Definitely worth a watch - from a story point of view it's not great, but it's probably one of the better anime I've seen that really capture the essence of the whole NEET phenomenon and how that interacts with everyday life. As others have said, the character designs are very cute too, and their personalities are quite well fleshed out.

Now this might be a mistake but get on it ASAP -
Space Dandy Collector's Blu ray - £29.99 http://www.zavvi.com/blu-ray/space-dand ... 91997.html
Kill la Kill Vol.1 Collector's Blu ray - £29.99 http://www.zavvi.com/blu-ray/kill-la-ki ... 85082.html
Damn, just bought Space Dandy from there on Thursday for £36 with a 20% off code. Also got Bakemonogatari Collection for £29 which balances it out a bit.

Pity I can't get reimbursed for the difference like with Amazon when you buy just before a significant price drop.

Excellent, just snagged the Space Dandy set. Regarding their packaging; I had a couple of standard discs from them in December and both came inside a sturdy box without issue.
