The News Thread (for news that does not need a thread)

Does it not bother anyone else that Sentai seems to license so many shows each season? Their home video releases are pretty disappointing in every regard (Video Encoding/Subtitles/Extras, and their EngDubs are the worst). The only advantage they have is that they seem to get shows out somewhat quicker than other distributors.

It's bothering me too for a few reasons:
- The Blu-rays are too expensive in comparison to Funimation's prices, especially the two course season titles like Clannad for instance.
- The lack of extra content just annoys me.
- They're licensing TOO MUCH. If they license at least 5 at a time every two months then maybe their release could have better quality.
- QC is also an issue, but everyone's got that.

The plus side is that they're getting more B compatible releases which is nice.

Rumours of another hollywood film based on an manga have appeared, this time being Berserk (mainly the Golden Age arc). Facepalm:
Jonny B. just pointed me to an eyebrow-raising new title in pre-production for a 2017 release.

Entitled Berserk, the horror/action/adventure is an adaptation of the popular Manga series written and illustrated by Kentaro Miura.

According to IMDB (who can never be trusted – thus, this is unconfirmed), the feature film adaptation will include this massive list of directors: Christophe Gans (Silent Hill, Brotherhood of the Wolf ), Oliver Stone (JFK, Platoon, Natural Born Killers) and Nicolas Winding Refn (Only God Forgives, Drive, Bronson)!

In the adaptation, “The Epic of Guts, a dangerous barbarian who joins forces with a mercenary group named ‘The Band of the Hawk’, lead by the charismatic Griffith, and fights with them as they battle their way into the royal court and their final doom.”

Stuart Beattie (I, Frankenstein, 30 Days of Night, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl) worked on the screenplay.

Expect casting news shortly.

I think Sentai could just save time by announcing what titles they HAVEN'T licensed each season.

Entirely possible :)

I'm going to have to chime in and agree on the prices and features. The BD are more than a Funi combo pack yet are barebones for the most part. I guess they make a profit buy licencing early, cheaply with no extras and grab some extra cash with higher prices and no combo packs.

Honestly, I do agree with Sentai's pricing. Also, what's with their recent practice of releasing a series and OVAs separately (like Kokoro Connect and Girls und Panzer)? At base RightStuf prices, it would cost me $83 (£50) to buy both the Kokoro Connect TV and OVA Blu-rays - or £74 from UP1. The average FUNimation 12/13 episode DVD/BD combi-pack tends to be about 2/3rds of that price and actually have extras.

Some of you may have heard that the US release of the hotly anticipated Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo has been delayed. Unfortunately we can now confirm that this has had a knock-on effect for the UK DVD and Blu-ray release and as a result we have been forced to amend the release date. We are very sorry for this but it is beyond our control.

The new release date will be Monday 25th August 2014.

This date change will be reflected with online retailers listings shortly.

However, in light of this news we are now excited to able to confirm that there will be theatrical screenings of Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo prior to our DVD & Blu-ray release of Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo across the UK. More details on this will be made available at a later date.

We encourage you to keep an eye on MangaUK.com, as well as the Manga UK Twitter, Facebook & Instagram pages for more information as it becomes available.

Kind regards

Those 2 sets of OAVs are a bit tricky though, if it was 1 episode it just goes with the rest of the series. 4/6 extra episodes puts the count quite high for any company to do on their standard 2 disc releases. Funimation also did this with the Baka and Test OAVs, perhaps it all comes down to licencing issues, grabbing the extra episode OAV of a series is easy, grabbing a short OAV series that was done after the main series, not so easy.

It was hinted at during the end credits of its first series, but it's now been confirmed that production will commence on a second season of Kyoto Animation's popular original series Free! Iwatobi Swim Club.
Although an exact broadcast date for this second series is yet to be confirmed, the first season closed with the message "See You Next Summer", which suggests that we can expect more tales of this group of swimming-obsessed friends to premiere in July 2014.

I AM READY

I personally was never interested in Free! (to be fair, I'm not exactly it's target audience), but I know a lot of people who loved the show, so I'm happy for them. Especially as Kyoto Animation have already promised me Tamako Love Story =3.
