The Gundam Thread

I really loved Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, so I am willing to give Kenji Kamiyama on Gundam a chance. I don't know if I can get invested in a Gundam show with this being its only pitch. As Hellcat says, this is like those Godzilla movies. You can understand why a Gundam video game would want endless waves of self replicating drone enemies for the player to blow up. For a show that just sounds very uninteresting and like risks shackling in the creators to a dodgy multimedia project's rules from the start. Oh well.

My calendar had an alert this weekend. I set up up last year telling me that if we didn't have news about Hathaway 2 or Victory Gundam getting license for a UK release I should order the Japanese versions. But there is no Japanese Blu-Ray for Hathaway's second film yet. Which is very disappointing.

If this is coming here on this date and not just the US what a monumental **** up by AL and Bandai on the UK cinema release.

Yep. Like I've been saying since May, Anime Limited (or whoever makes the final call) pushed this so far back that now people are going to rip that Netflix release and that will sate most people.

It really does annoy me and it's why I keep repeating my view AL's stance is "You'll get Gundam when we can be arsed". There had to be some better way of doing this, especially when they made sure stuff like Bleach was getting tandem with other countries.

The Crunchyroll take over of Nozomi has really messed up the Gundam releases. It's made getting the currently available material difficult for AL and all the US sets have gone oop as Crunchyroll refuse to reprint them. The awful exclusive release of WfM didn't help either.

I mean AL were dragging their heels well before the buyout. It's a damn tragedy what Crunchyroll did but rightstuf had pretty much released everything Gundam when the hammer fell. AL haven't even finished UC. And if you ever listened to the podcast that was Jeremy's project, you could hear the joy vanish from the room whenever they had to discuss Gundam.

AL's handling of Gundam has been... odd. Why did we never get 08th MS Team or 0080, two of the most celebrated entries in the franchise, nor any explanation as to why those, and more or less only those, were consistently overlooked. More than any other Gundam AL released, I coveted nice collector sets for those two. Alas~

Whatever merits it has, the lower-profile Turn A Gundam got 50 episodes BBFC'd. Make it make sense 🫨

They've said before they have to basically reach a consensus with Sunrise for what title comes next here. Sadly that seems to have resulted in them pushing more recent titles, seemingly so the company can make money back on more recent efforts.

(I did some work on Gundam for Bandai America in the 2000s. The parent company is big on moving money around to make things look good on paper.)

It's certainly a damn crime we don't have 0080. With all due respect that should have been a priority well before the turgid mess of retcons that is 0083.
