The General Conversation Area

Haven't done it yet, but from research (my dad's done a thorough job on his side and I've done a bit on my mum's side) I know that there'll be Scandi (family name is supposedly from that region), French (Huguenot from the La Rochelle area), Dutch (my mum's mum was Dutch, grandad met her just after the war) with a bit of German and Yorkshire (although the surname is of possible Dutch origin and of course Yorkshire was part of the Danelaw so possibly more Scandi blood there too).

Except the English, obviously. :p

No like for me @RadFemHedonist? Was it the comment about the Mormons? If it makes any difference I don’t have anything against them I don’t also have against every other organised religion.

Actually the main reason I sometimes don't like your posts is bcuz they are a bit too long to skim read! I don't think you're overly verbose or anything I'm just a bit short on time esp rn while I'm sorting out my flat, so that's also why I didn't like all your Higurashi posts but the ones I did read were riveting! I even went back over quite a few pages of posts trying to read them all and that's why the likes were in reverse order to you posting them :)

Also I'm apparently now a mad scientist, didn't see that one coming but I'll embrace my new role, couldn't have done it without all of you lovely other posters!! :)

...I've lost count of how much (often mental) maths I have done to figure out how to arrange my furniture in my flat so it will all fit and I'll have what I need in both my bedroom and living-room! I think I must have done like... 50 different configurations lol, but at least it's given me something to focus my thoughts on other than my anxiety and depression! :)

I'd be interested in doing one of those DNA tests myself. From my family tree, I know I have a very mixed ancestry.

My mother was born in London, her mother was from Mansfield, however, my mother was a result of a fling between her mother and a man from Puerto Rico (who didn't stick around).

My father was also born in London, but his father was from Poland and fought in the second world war for the Polish army. While my father's mother was from Cyprus (they met in London, where my father was born).

As a result, I'm some weird hybrid, mixed with a handful of different ethnicities, to the point where nobody could pinpoint where I'm from. Although, put it this way, when I grow my beard I wouldn't blame airport staff if they asked if they can check my bags 😂

Having mixed heritage and not looking completely white used to cause me quite a bit of angst when I was younger. People always used to ask where I was from, not in a mean or racist way, I think they were just genuinely curious, but I never knew how to answer that question.

Nowadays, if people ask where I'm from, I just say I have some family from Cyprus on my dad's side (because I'm guessing people are really asking why do you look a bit brown? 😂) and that usually satisfies their curiosity.

My parents have done the Ancestry and got back to 1700s, it was quite hard going, a lot of them changed names between censuses and would go by different first names just to shake things up a bit, like a Mary would start going by Molly for some reason etc. My uncle did the DNA and unsurprisingly there was a lot of Nordic stuff and Scottish and Irish which given the general hair colour (REDDDD, my brother's family aggressively fluorescent red) kinda explained a lot.

I kinda wish I came from whenever Totoro is set though, it looks absolutely heavenly

I don't I'm afraid, both mine are old school and have wires, but the keyboard does light up (but I'm not a gamer) I just liked the click of the keys and the lights were a happy aside!

I have had a singular fly in my kitchen for a week now. I keep trying to shoo it out but it just keeps zooming round my head and driving me bonkers.

I have a wireless keyboard/mouse combo I got off Amazon, it has a brushed grey metal shell so it's quite weighty but very thin with those chiclet keys and a lighted keyboard, because I like to sit in the dark dining room on my All-in-one PC in the evenings. Not sure what Chinese brand it is, but it's been working great for about 2 years now.

I have a question/concern to ask of those living in the UK about Royal Mail. I sold an item on eBay (an anime Blu-ray disc, ironically) and my buyer, who is located in the UK claims they did not receive it. I have the Royal Mail tracking which has proof of delivery, complete with a photograph. Here is the issue--it says "left with neighbour." Is this a thing in the United Kingdom? I am in the USA for reference. The US Postal Service will generally leave a note asking the addressee to pick up their item at the Post Office if the carrier cannot deliver the item. I am just trying to determine my eligibility for protection as a seller in this instance as nothing like this has ever happened to me before and it was a fairly pricey item. ☹️

Thank you in advance.

The postman will usually take it back to the sorting office and leave a red card telling you to collect it yeah. Unless the person has specified it can be left with a neighbor or a safe place (e.g. back porch) but they should also leave the red card outlining this as well. Maybe ask the buyer to ask their neighbor but if the postman left it with a neighbor and it's gone missing without this consent then they are liable iirc.

As far as I am aware, the postman is within their rights to do that, but they are supposed to put a card through the intended recipient’s letterbox to say where the parcel is (returned to depot, left with No.38, placed in shed, thrown in hedge etc.). If they have not done that, or even if they have and the parcel has then gone missing, RM is liable. Don’t give any refunds at this point because if the parcel shows up again (or the buyer is simply lying) then you’ve lost the item and the money. Get in touch with RM with your tracking details and get them to either find and redeliver the parcel (or tell you the address it was left at for you to pass on to the buyer) or if they can’t, put in a claim with them first.

Personally, I have experienced RM failing to deliver a card when they have taken a parcel back to the depot, which resulted in a parcel being returned to the sender because I didn’t collect it. That was their fault and they had to compensate me for that.

Thank you both for the replies. I checked the Royal Mail tracking and it stated the unit number of the "neighbour" in question as well as a photo of delivery. It says a note was left for the addressee but the buyer says they received no note of any kind. I (politely) suggested they check with their neighbor about the item. They have not escalated this (yet) so hopefully if they attempt to do so I have enough of an paper trail to protect myself against a fraudulent "item not received" claim.

This is definitely Royal Mail's responsibility, not yours :)

Is anyone finidng themselves constantly re-watching anime instead watching newer stuff? At most I probably try 3-4 shows a season now instead of giving everything I get

The older I get the more I realise time is precious so I'd rather just watch something I know is good instead of risking something that turns out to be crap half way through same goes for live action tv
