The General Conversation Area

Haven't done it yet, but from research (my dad's done a thorough job on his side and I've done a bit on my mum's side) I know that there'll be Scandi (family name is supposedly from that region), French (Huguenot from the La Rochelle area), Dutch (my mum's mum was Dutch, grandad met her just after the war) with a bit of German and Yorkshire (although the surname is of possible Dutch origin and of course Yorkshire was part of the Danelaw so possibly more Scandi blood there too).

Except the English, obviously. :p

No like for me @RadFemHedonist? Was it the comment about the Mormons? If it makes any difference I don’t have anything against them I don’t also have against every other organised religion.

Actually the main reason I sometimes don't like your posts is bcuz they are a bit too long to skim read! I don't think you're overly verbose or anything I'm just a bit short on time esp rn while I'm sorting out my flat, so that's also why I didn't like all your Higurashi posts but the ones I did read were riveting! I even went back over quite a few pages of posts trying to read them all and that's why the likes were in reverse order to you posting them :)

Also I'm apparently now a mad scientist, didn't see that one coming but I'll embrace my new role, couldn't have done it without all of you lovely other posters!! :)

...I've lost count of how much (often mental) maths I have done to figure out how to arrange my furniture in my flat so it will all fit and I'll have what I need in both my bedroom and living-room! I think I must have done like... 50 different configurations lol, but at least it's given me something to focus my thoughts on other than my anxiety and depression! :)

I'd be interested in doing one of those DNA tests myself. From my family tree, I know I have a very mixed ancestry.

My mother was born in London, her mother was from Mansfield, however, my mother was a result of a fling between her mother and a man from Puerto Rico (who didn't stick around).

My father was also born in London, but his father was from Poland and fought in the second world war for the Polish army. While my father's mother was from Cyprus (they met in London, where my father was born).

As a result, I'm some weird hybrid, mixed with a handful of different ethnicities, to the point where nobody could pinpoint where I'm from. Although, put it this way, when I grow my beard I wouldn't blame airport staff if they asked if they can check my bags 😂

Having mixed heritage and not looking completely white used to cause me quite a bit of angst when I was younger. People always used to ask where I was from, not in a mean or racist way, I think they were just genuinely curious, but I never knew how to answer that question.

Nowadays, if people ask where I'm from, I just say I have some family from Cyprus on my dad's side (because I'm guessing people are really asking why do you look a bit brown? 😂) and that usually satisfies their curiosity.

My parents have done the Ancestry and got back to 1700s, it was quite hard going, a lot of them changed names between censuses and would go by different first names just to shake things up a bit, like a Mary would start going by Molly for some reason etc. My uncle did the DNA and unsurprisingly there was a lot of Nordic stuff and Scottish and Irish which given the general hair colour (REDDDD, my brother's family aggressively fluorescent red) kinda explained a lot.

I kinda wish I came from whenever Totoro is set though, it looks absolutely heavenly
