The General Conversation Area

Jesus, really? Did they not care about dehydration? I sneak up to my locker for a drink during a four-hour shift.

A drink of... Lucozade!

They had water stations in the warehouse area, but it was c**p - all it did was stop your mouth from going dry for a bit, before it went dry again and you had to make repeated trips. It's because of things being in a temp-controlled environment; fans on, no windows, it made the air really dry and stale. For a short period we were allowed to take in our own drinks, but some higher-up stopped it. The thing is soft drinks have the sugar needed for energy release, and I'm weak as **** as it is due to PA, and with not having breaks all the time (they'd give one if it went over the fives hours but it depended on how much, and even then, if THEY even wanted to give the break. Work always came first, it was pretty unethical really!

Workers are workers. If they die you can hire a replacement.

Unfortunately this was pretty much the mentality. I never believed it, but I actually was a number. They give you a number, and you look at a board to see how you performed (by looking for your number on the board) - if you were green, you did good, and if you were red, you were ****. If you were in the middle, you were doing okay I guess. But I always thought that the whole "I'm just a number" thing was just an exaggeration until I worked there...

Christ sake. The usual. All very well for them, isn't it, not actually doing the job.

Wow, that is actually mind-numbing. And soul-destroying. No wonder you jacked it in.

The checklists for our carrier bag deliveries show the start and finish times of each picking list at the warehouse. Some are something like 17 seconds or whatever. Imagine actually being pedantic enough to measure that.

I'm glad I quit when I did. I literally only took the job on to pay off my Diploma, since you'd get punished if you didn't keep up repayments. But it was pretty bad. Oh the people (fellow workers) were lovely, I got on with everyone there, it's just a shame about the productivity over staff welfare thing...

Soul-destroying it was. I was part of the evening team, so we had more lines to do than the day team. Some nights we didn't finish until after 11:00pm!

I got told on a couple of occasions that my picking needed to improve, but I just didn't care by that point! Some nights I was dragging myself through dizzyness and aches, I just did what I could!

That's bloody terrible. They're just never satisfied until they're bordering on turning people into empty husks.

I've got the run of the whole store, so it's difficult for the bosses to keep track of you. To this day, they've never found a way to implement productivity into my section; it's too difficult for them to pin down.

That's lucky, though with retail, it's mostly about KPI's, and to be fair, it doesn't really find it's way into the warehouseing/loading bay area - the higher-ups are the ones looking at black and white data; what sells, what doesn't - then it's the job of the loading bay staff to get that **** onto the shop floor, where the sales adviser sell the **** to people with too much money!
