I'm not sure about PPG but he worked on Dexter's Lab and Samurai Jack.
Twerking should have been left in 2016, pretty much the same as how "the dab" should have been left in 2017...

Yeah, I was not impressed by some of the decisions taken with the new PPG. Pop cultural references are like a writer’s laziest way of being “down with the kids”, and they always date things horribly.
And speaking of being down with the kids, how do I, one of the most out of touch people with popular culture, still know what dabbing is and you guys don’t?

Dabbing is that cheesy pose that you see people doing, where one arm is outstretched, and the head is buried in the crook of the other arm, which is bent but pointing towards the outretched arm. You know what, just think of Usain Bolt when he does his "thing", it's kind of like that. I think a hip-hop artist "invented" it...
Only TTG is worse with how lazy and insulting to the original it is.
