The Gaming News Thread (for news that doesn't need a thread)

We have Parasite Eve at home.

Seriously though, this looks pretty good. Considering that Squenix had probably lost the licence to the Parasite Eve name by the time the awkwardly titled The 3rd Birthday was released on PSP, we will likely never get a new or remade official game.
I was thinking this is just a random fan made trailer, but it's actually a thing?! Hopefully they have a lawyer on retainer. But is there really no hope for a parasite eve remaster in the age of remasters? Apart from the Silent Hill series which is having a miraculous renaissance currently, the original parasite eve game is for me easily the most under-represented excellent classic ps1 horror begging for a remaster.

The main roadblock for Parasite Eve is that Square never owned the IP. The first game is a sequel to a Japanese novel of the same name. That's the incident in Japan that you hear them refer to in the game. There was a live-action adaptation of the novel back in the 90s too.

As I mentioned, the fact that they didn't use the PE name for the third game starring Aya Brea, a game that ditches all the recognisable story elements, suggests that Square's licence had already expired 20 years ago. Aya was an original character made for the game, so she's probably the only part they could legally reuse.

Since the mid-90s, Square have transformed from a well respected (but not massive) developer, to one of the game industry's biggest publishers. Whoever owns the Parasite Eve IP would probably ask for a fortune to licence it again.

Ah that makes sense now, I always wondered why they dropped the PE moniker for that 3rd game, but the fact that Aya was an original character fits. Never did get to play that third one, though I believe it wasn't that good so probably not missing out on much. The original book I did always want to read, should probably look up a translation for that if available. It's a shame that greed on all sides could effectively bury the possibility of a remake and a great IP overall.

I've made a few attempts to play The 3rd Birthday, but always get bored and give up within a couple of hours. The body-swapping combat sounds interesting on paper, but quickly gets tedious in practice.

Speaking of body-swapping horror games, I tried Slitterhead a few months ago. It's so close to being Parasyte: The Game that I wouldn't be surprised if that was the original pitch and it had the serial number filed off later. Coming from one of the creators of Silent Hill, it's suitably creepy, and even borrows the sight-jacking mechanic from Siren in a few places. It makes a good first impression and I enjoyed the first few hours. I started to lose interest after about six hours though, so I was still only about a third of the way through when I gave up. I think the problem is the mission-based, somewhat non-linear and repetitive structure that saps the pacing. It feels like a budget indie game that's trying punch above its weight and mimic a AA game, but doesn't quite have the resources to pull it off.

Oh my goodness, I completely forgot about this one! I recall seeing some early info before all the silent hill revamp hype and really wanted to try it. Shame though from what you said, and also sounds like it's not quite the horror I was expecting from that mission based approach you mentioned... Hey ho, definitely no shortage of good horror for me now so I can pass on that then heh

Need that extra time as their staff are protesting and refusing to work after they fired a bunch of people for trying to start a union 🤦‍♂️

They can take as long as it takes so it doesn't launch like that crapfest Cyberpunk 2077!!!
