Overseas The Discotek Media Thread (plus AnimEigo)

I ordered direct to UK so there was pre-paid VAT upfront but no customs at arrival. Shipped via APC Tracking.

How long did it take for the tracking to update after being shipped? I ask because I ordered 3 titles on Sunday, they were shipped on Monday, but the tracking hasn't updated yet.

Not sure how long it has been active, but the second week of Crunchyroll US' holiday sale is up.

There are a 41 Discotek titles in the sale.

Additionally, it looks like some of the November and December Discotek pre-orders are already in stock and shipping, including the Digimon movies! There's a few things on sale that are on my wish list too 👀

Again, I've been forced to make a purchase (despite my last CR order only arriving today), but I did need the GE999 TV as today's parcel included the movie:
Galaxy Express 999 Collection 1 Blu-ray $52.46, Ah My Buddha!! Blu-ray $17.68 and Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san Blu-ray $21.97

Another batch of Discotek Media anime titles going out of print, revealed at around 1am this morning as per usual:

Most of these are fairly expected. Battery's counterpart The Great Passage discontinued a while back so this was going to happen sooner. Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics and Lupin the Third Part V were both announced to be going out of print by the end of this year at the start of the year so there was room for warning, and it seems Season 2 for the former has been delisted from Crunchyroll's Store.

Holmes of Kyoto, Isuca and Nyanbo! are all part of the Crunchyroll sub-license agreement so any of those were going to discontinue at some point sooner than later.

Tokyo Underground was also expected given the license rescues that were released onto SD-BD (Elemental Gelade, Law of Ueki) started discontinuing earlier as well, plus it's a fairly old release and its time has now come to pass. Ashi Productions show NG Knight Lamune & 40 is also in a similar situation where its time has now come to pass, so expect its other counterpart (VS Knight Lamune & 40 Fire) to discontinue in the coming months.

Medarot 1.gif

Medabots, both the English & Japanese versions, are probably from the same licensing agreement so that likely explains why the Japanese version is also going alongside the English version. Which probably means Medabots Spirits will soon discontinue if Medabots Season 3 does as well.

Love Hina Again is also an older release and pretty cheap, which I held off on due to not owning the main series.

The biggest surprise here is that both Lupin the Third films are all going out of print. I believe this was an NTV license so chances are the agreement had now expired given both are relatively semi-recent releases.

Anyway all of this is a further reminder that you shouldn't be holding off on the older Discotek Media releases if you're still interested in them, because at this point every release up until the end of 2022 are all at risk in theory, and no point praying for a UK distributor to release them because 99% of these are not going to be released over here.

I think Nyanbo! is the only one there I don’t have, so if that stays up long enough I’ll chuck it into my next CR store purchase. Glad I went for the Medabot sets with my last haul now.

So glad I got Holmes of Kyoto - that was a huge title for me, and the only one in that list I was interested in, except maybe Isuca. I almost picked that one up, but never did. Oh, what the heck - I just totally blind-bought a copy of Isuca elsewhere online - I figure I better do it now before the prices shoot up for it being OOP. I see a set of the Grimms Fairy Tales Blu-rays 1 & 2 on eBay going for $370 already. 🙄

EDIT: So I watched a couple of episodes of Isuca on CR after I bought the Blu-ray, and discovered it was actually an ecchi title, and was also informed the Discotek Blu-ray is uncensored - so that was an unexpected little bonus! 😊

Justin over on Discotek Media's Reddit has noted two things:
  • February 2025 line-up (the next batch of new releases) is expected to go live sometime next week.
  • After the holiday season there will be another Discotek Day live-stream, estimated to be either in January or February.
Meanwhile over on AnimEigo's end:
  • Nasu - Summer in Andalusia has been available to pre-order for a short while now. Will be released for 11th March 2025. This is a Region A US & CA release, therefore you will not be able to order their store exclusive slipcase version if you live outside the country due to their website's geolocking setup (not even a US address will bypass their system). You can still order the standard edition on Crunchyroll's Store and Amazon US without issue.
  • Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01 is the next classic AnimEigo title to receive the latest re-release treatment, with pre-orders now available. Will be released for 11th April 2025. This is a Region ABC release much like the Kickstarter version, so you will be able to order the title via MediaOCD's store. The big difference between this release and the previous one is the inclusion of the UK English dub (the US English dub was already with the previous releases).

It's nice to see the original Cutie Honey series coming back. A shame that's it's only SD though; I'll just stick with my DVDs.

AnimEigo have announced they have picked up the rights to TMS Entertainment & Osamu Dezaki's 1977 anime series Nobody's Boy Remi, coming to Blu-ray in 2025 in Japanese audio with English subtitles. Regions are not specified but likely to be USA/CA only which would mean it'll be blocked for purchase on the MediaOCD store if you were after a slipcase.

AllTheAnime France have released this series on Blu-ray before (see below), but Discotek's release will include the French dub as it's set in France.

71aeblp5ONL._AC_UF894,1000_QL80_.jpg

This series will be presented as part of their 'Ruined Childhood' line-up.

One of my all time favourite shows. Thus far the only way I could legally watch this was buying the Dutch version on dvd, but that version only has an awful Dutch dub. Even with the Dutch dub it was wonderful to watch. Very happy with this announcement!

MediaOCD Store will now stock Discotek Media releases plus any from their Nihon Nights and Toku Time labels. For the time being, they just have their February 2025 slate but there are plans to include older titles that are still in print.

1735862903896.png

While the AnimEigo titles will have geolocking if they don't have the rights for titles outside US/CA (it will display as a greyed out title like Nasu above), Justin Sevakis has confirmed Discotek's titles will be available to purchase for everyone.

1735862655414.png

Discotek Day is incoming. The next livestream will appear on Tuesday 21st January at 2am, with a total of 24-25 new announcements. As this is hosted on YouTube, a recording should be available to watch (unless copyrighted material gets in the way but they do tend to check this beforehand).

Worth mentioning if you look at their list of known licenses that they have yet to release, the only anime left now is Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, as the rest of the known anime titles were included in the February 2025 schedule.

In terms of live-action we do have a few left. Android Kikaider, Kekko Kamen: The Trilogy, Ouran High School Host Club, PARTY 7 and RoboGeisha.

Anyone else following this stream consider it a massive disappointment? It's almost over, and most of the announcements are western cartoons or live action stuff. And of the few things they have announced (7 anime titles out of 22 announcements), almost half are previously released titles; Higurashi has been readily available on BD for years! Probably the worst Discotek panel I've seen in years. Even if they announce a couple of big titles at the end, I'll be buying virtually nothing from Discotek for a long time, if this is their release slate.

yeh the number of anime announcements was disappointing.
but tbh I'm not that interested in the stuff they usually release anyway, so anything that I am interested in is a bonus (this time Angel Heart - not as good as City Hunter or Cat's Eye but I'll happily pick it up)

I enjoyed the steam, learning a bit about how licensing and remastering works, but there is nothing I would like to buy from this batch, sadly.

I definitely plan to pick up Cyborg 009 vs. Devilman, Angel Heart, Osomatsu-kun!, Lupin the Third: The Live-Action Film and Higurashi: When They Cry.

Discotek Day results. Will update throughout today as I got up early to make some notes.

#22 - The Happiness of the Katakuris (カタクリ家の幸福)
NIHON NIGHTS: Film / 2001 / Directed by Takashi Miike

Wacky film by Miike that has seen a UK release by Arrow Video. And I believe Discotek also previously released this on DVD for North America.

Coming to Blu-ray! In Japanese with English subtitles. Extras include Takashi Miike commentary, making-of, animation featurette, trailers, and interviews with cast and crew. Available 2025.

#23 - DearS
ANIME: TV Series / 2004 / Studio Daume

The classic harem series was previously released on DVD by Discotek Media. Brought to HD format by AstroRes technology because the soft look would make it harder to remaster under normal means.

Coming to Blu-ray! In Japanese with English subtitles and the English dub. All 12 episodes. Extras include clean OP/ED clips. The 13th episode is also included with this release. Available 2025.

#24 - Urotsukidōji Collection 1: Movie 1 & OVAs 1-3 - Legend of the Overfiend
ANIME: Film + OVA Series / 1987-1996 / Phoenix Entertainment (Project Team Mu and West Cape Corporation)

Yep, Discotek Media are releasing another hentai to their collection. Previously released on Blu-ray by Media Blasters and of course in the UK cut by Manga Entertainment for obvious reasons. Discotek's release is completely uncut.

This is a brand new, historic 2K scan and restoration of the last known existing uncut 35mm prints from a private collection. Media Blasters' version was cropped and censored, so Discotek found one of the last prints and scanned them. AstroRes was used on a badly damaged print that took 9 months to restore.

The theatrical compilation film version is the 2K scan mentioned, while the OVA series version remains in standard definition. Again also uncut. Due to the hentai content, this release will not be available on Crunchyroll Store or MediaOCD Store.

Coming to Blu-ray! In Japanese with English subtitles and the English dub for the film, and Japanese with English subtitles for the OVA series (all 3 episodes). Extras include animatics, trailers, Japanese OP/ED, US Home Video & Liner Notes. Available 2025.
