The Anime/Manga I Bought Today Was...

I tried to resist too, but then I looked to my Oreimo and Madoka Magica LEs... No willpower whatsoever.
But neither of those cost around £150 (as a one of purchase). For a couple of shows I havn't watched it is too big a gamble when there are other shows I could buy for the same cost (Fafner bd, Shana Season 2 Part 1 & 2 bd, Heaven's Memo Pad bdetc). Besides the November release of Garden of Sinners is dvd only (RRP $190 at TRSI) which is way too much (the bd set was released last year).

Puella Magi Madoka Magica cost me over £200 for the limited editions but the cost was spread out as it was released in three parts (and I got part 3 as a birthday present). If I recall the biggest single purchase for me is the Escaflowne DVD Set Limited Edition which cost me £150 (including shipping) but that was a long time ago. The upcoming Durarara Set will cost me a similar amount but unlike Bakemonogatari and Garden of Sinners, I have seen Duarara before therefore I can justify the purchase.

Which Escaflowne release is this? The old Bandai one with the figurine? Ouch if that cost you £150.

Durara also tempts me because I regret not getting the ltd ed version of Baccano...

If you take this approach, sometimes things sell out and you're never able to get them again :( I'm sure a sensible person could go 'oh well, plenty more fish int he sea, series come out all the time' and move on. But If I miss out on something it tortures me for weeks :(

Otaku.co.uk are doing Bakemonogatari for £132.99 (their postage is free for DVDs, I assume this qualifies...) if you want to sweeten things a little ;)

I already have the imported discs so the US price seems ok (that and I still mentally compare everything to prices in the old days, and if I paid £200 for what were objectively pretty weak series back then, paying a lot now for something actually good always feels better). It's a shame nobody is streaming even a few episodes to the UK anywhere, though the sequel series Nisemonogatari is on Crunchyroll if you want to taste the style of it all.

Garden of Sinners is an awkward one since the existence of the BDs and the lack of any massive incentives in the bundle makes it seem less like a deal.

Must... resist...

Is TRSI a definite no-go for this? I took Bakemonogatari to checkout the other day, and no hurdles were placed in my path. I mean, I wouldn't tell Aniplex if they wouldn't...

I really wish I'd got the Oreimo one.
You didn't really miss much. The Oreimo LE consists of a bunch of (admittedly nice) postcards and a booklet shoved into a cardstock box along with the DVD case. There's also a poster, but you get one with the regular edition as well.

I think it's a little cheaper still if you use UP1's US site (depending on your card's foreign transaction fees and postage costs).

I think they'd probably remove it from or cancel your order after going through checkout. I think that kind of checking is done manually, the site is hardly high tech and they've removed the bit of checking out that separates international orders from domestic. If you're lucky there's a slim chance someone would let it go through though :p

As much as I love Jenny being back in Europe again, it's a pain in the ass not having a US address to send things to!

I agree, £150 is a somewhat daunting price to pay for anime all in one go. For the record, I think the Garden of Sinners DVD LE is overpriced, although I've never seen the show before so I'm just going on the fact it's a DVD release. However, I have seen both Durarara and Bakemonogatari and are shows I consider to be well worth the money.

Aniplex of America could probably do with a bit more tweaking in the pricing vis-a-vis a series' length. Durarara is 26 episodes, Bakemonogatari is 15 episodes, but both cost the same price (£141). Sounds a little hypocritical to be complaining considering I've order them, but Bakemonogatari.

I have an order with TRSI so I'll let you know ;) I placed it before the "we hate non-Americans" AoA message was added, though, so I reckon I have grounds to moan if the order is cancelled later.

One thing I like about the Bakemonogatari release is that the on-disc Japanese commentaries are being translated instead of purged from existence entirely. American releases have become pretty terrible and barebones when it comes to interesting extras (I don't consider some of the dub cast laughing at one another and talking about how they 'wrote' the series in the guise of a commentary track as an interesting extra).

i said i like to go for the cheapest first but when started using this method it seemed like a good idea at the time, when i was using axle planet * RIP* i used this method but there was this series call spiral * everyone here was praising it for being good and im like *ok sounds good so il put it on my get list* and after months i decided to get it but it was sold out then i thought UP1 might have it and they didn't so yeah as much as i like using this method its best to go for the popular ones first,

sometimes the popular ones isn't really your cup of tea,

im a huge fan of anime and plan on buying all the western releases but there is a lot of them and when i go to buy then there out of print or they cant get it which torments me so yeah I can understand that

Bought a couple of things whilst shopping today:
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence

Rosario + Vampire: Volume 8

Earlier in the week I bought (again):
Sunshine/Hidamari Sketch: Volume 4

If you think the Garden of Sinners dvd set is overpriced you obviously never saw the bd release of it (TRSI listed it with a $599.98 RRP when it was released back in 2011 with a purchase price of $499.99).

I like interesting extras as well (currently watching the 'Ayano’s House Call: All-You-Can-Eat Cakes' segments on the Kaze no Stigma dvds in between watching the show itself) but I don't think paying that kind of price for the commentaries and a 36 page book is value for money.

I haven't seen Bakemonogatari, so I'll hold back too. I would love to own Durarara, but that's too pricey for me - the license has been rescued in the UK, so I'll wait and see where that goes. As said earlier in the thread, Madoka was in 3 batches of £70 spread over 6 months; wasn't crippling at all (and I'm on JSA).

Anyway, I bought Soul Eater Not 1 today.

I'd heard the BD release carried a high price, but I didn't know people were speaking $500. Wasn't it a direct import of the JP release though? We all know how licensors in Japan feel about 'reverse importation'. Don't think I could stretch that far for a series - £150-200 is the absolute limit, depending on the series and the contents of the box.

GAME CENTER CX!

CHIEF, ON!

Really, in the way, the story of GameCenter CX and it's localisation is pretty much a perfect emulation of the show, full of highs, lows and some really dumb mistakes.

I went a bit mad over the last week...

Rosario and vampire 1-10 and season 2 1-9
Also Black Cat 1-20
Also ordered One Piece collection 6-8 plus a heap of other titles from America-land
