Whisper of the Heart now, probably. I wouldn't be without Only Yesterday, Nausicaa, Laputa or Grave of the Fireflies either, but Whisper and Only Yesterday win out because I find both genuinely moving. I can't be objective about these things.

seen:

Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
Nausicáá of the Valley of the Wind

all were excellent, I plan to watch some of the other films mentioned here soon!

Princess Mononoke
Howl's Moving Castle
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

That's probably it, although there are still a few I've yet to see.

mononoke
nausicaa
whisper of the heart

they have many other great films like howl's and grave, but those three have been re-watched countless times already...

It's hard to choose my favourites but here are my top 6:

Princess Mononoke
Kiki's Delivery Service
Laputa Castle in the Sky
Totoro
Nausicaa
Whisper of the Heart

I love all studio ghibli movies and they are all classics in there own way,but Totoro will always be my all time fave ghibli movie, not just my fave ghibli movie it is my fave move ever anime or otherwise, but the whole ghibli cannon is essential, well maybe Tales from Earthsea is not that essential but thats a matter for debate as some hate it and some love it,i,m not crazy about it,its just one of those dvds i had to get for collection purposes.

By Hayao Miyazaki,

Porco Rosso
My Neighbor Totoro
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

By other directors,

Whisper of the Heart
Grave of the Fireflies
My Neighbors the Yamadas

1. Spirited Away (Best cinema experience EVER)
2. Porco Rosso (First ever Ghibli film)
3. The Cat Returns

Honourable Mentions
4. My Neighbour Totoro
5. Kiki Delivery Service
6. Princess Mononoke
7. Howl's Moving Castle (Fourth best cinema experience EVER)
8. Whisper of the Heart

Watching Grave of the Fireflies once was enough for me. I was left devastated. Good film but one of those once a decade things.

My dad cried at grave of the fireflies and he's not really into anime but he found that really moving.
Laputa is a good one too and kiki's :)

I think they all have their good qualities :)

Ponyo is great but don't think disney should get involved with ghilbi cos to me ghilbi is japans answer to disney.
If I had seen ghilbi as a kid I think I'd have been in more wonder and awe than I was at disney.
My future kids are having lessons in the ghilbi expierence
