A cool superfast blue hegdehog versus a fat italian plumber that never actually does any plumbing, Im going to have to go with Sonice  But Knuckles rules them all.

I grew up playing the Sonic games on my Master System and Mega Drive and so I voted for the world's only blue hedgehog! :D

Who you would rather play?

An Italian plumber who collects magic mushrooms trying to save the Princess, who can't even escape from a castle.

Or

A cool hedgehog who tries to save the world from becoming robotic slaves and has a cute little sidekick.

Case closed! :p

when it comes to a fight they both can defeat by jumping on your head, without any tools i think sonic might just win cos he can run fast and turn into the whiry ball thing, but if mario had a metal upgrade from mario 64 then mario would win cos he could stop sonic and then stamp on him while sonic is dazed.

I think its preety safe to say that Sonic has well and truly kicked Mario's ass on this one huh, although Ive never seen someone compleate sonic in 11 mins flat so mario (3) still got something over sonic lol 8)

Sonic was origianally the best of the best, taking the gaming world(which wasn't to big at the time) by storm. And it did the same for me, and as mario appeared, most people started to go for that, yet Sonic was still the best to me at the time.

Wasn't Mario around ages before Sonic? :?: ? IF anyone took the gaming world by storm, it was the little fat Itallian bloke.
I never really got into Sonic, the games were all too fast and bored the life out of me. The Mario games, except for the first one, SMB2 which wasn't really a Mario Game originally anyway and the original Donkey Kong, are GREAT! SMB1/3/World, are classics! I don' like the newer stuff in 3D, all the stuff after what was on the Super Nintendo are a bit anoying, and the almost monthly release of a new Mario game is starting to get even more irritating.
Anyway, all Sonic can do is run and jump, Mario can run/jump/swim/fly/throw fireballs or hammers/ride dinosaurs/repair a leaky tap, he's a one-man Navy SeALS unit!
Sonic and Tails?... PAH :x

The old Maio cartoon was GREAT... "we're the Mario Brothers, and plumbin's our game, found a secret warp while we were woring on the drain..." need I say more?
Also, Mario's music was FAR better, it's been used in loads of songs in Japan, like that one by HaliCali(?) and that really funny one earlier this year that I can't remember the name of but was full of Mario related lyrics.

By the way. Does anyone remember that TV advert for SEGA with that bloke (apparently handsome, but I remember him as just plain ordinary) who lived in a hi-tech trailer or something that was all black and shiny and played SEGA games all the time? Wansn't that a Sonic advert?

I'll say it again:
Sonic and Tails?... PAH :x

The Sonic music was far, far more memorable IMO. Well, before Dreams Come True became big JPop stars and started charging nasty royalities for the themes. Mario's music used in lots of songs in Japan, Sonic's not? Inconclusive. You used a sample from Sonic 1 / 2's music, you'd have to pay a truck load of Yen to DCT. You use one from Mario? Nintendo may well pay you for reminding people that of their games.

Besides, some pretty damned awful stuff has had Mario samples in it. Think I'm crazy? But i've got to rescue Daisy

edit: http://sonicsez.ytmnd.com/ <- the best sonic quote, ever? (done to death of course :p)

Mario did appear before Sonic yes, but he didn't really get popular until both Super mario world and mario 64, so in a way he only became more noticed when the SNES and 64 came out.

The problem there is that metal mario would'nt be fast enough to catch sonic then.
Mario would have an advantage if he got a hold of the cape and flew above sonic, he'd be out of range, but he still has the problem about sonic's speed.

Em no! Mario was hugely popular in the 80's both on the back of Donkey Kong and then the original 3 Super Mario Brothers games on the NES, even if the second one sucked. His popularity was on the decline by the time of the SNES and by the time of Mario 64 he was alot less popular than he had ever been, most likley becasue of the market being over whelmed with 'memorable' game characters the ammount of which was much lower when Mario was at his peak

Actually, he wasn't called Mario that was in Donkey Kong - he was Jumpman. ;) He first appeared as Mario in Super Mario Bros on the NES - which still predated Sonic by about six years.
