Slayers discussion

Right, as i said, the plan was to make a themed style couple of weeks each time. So to start off we have Slayers for two weeks.

Personally i've never looked into it, mainly cause i wasn't taken in by the DVD covers when i first saw them way back when, but been a lot more interested as of late. I think the only reason i've not gone into it properly now is, i have no idea where to start as there is so much! So yeah...where do i start? Just at the regular Slayers series, or is there somewhere else to start?

Woo!

The best place to start is Slayers TV. The other TV shows all follow on from that. The first series is heavy parody and the animation is sloppy and cheap but if the sense of humour works for you you'll have a great time with it. Slayers NEXT, the second series, is particularly awesome in my opinion.

The OAVs and movies are "prequels" with no effect on the rest. They have the same main character and some of the other characters/spells/settings are the same too but there's no need to watch them in order and don't expect them to have long, continuing plots like the TV version. Slayers Great is probably my favourite of the movies/OAVs for sheer ridiculousness.

The only exception is Slayers Premium which is a short movie with the TV cast; an extended filler episode. Watch it any time after NEXT if you want to see that one.

Going to make a temporary Slayers avatar now :>

Your avatar is somewhat scary...hah.

Anyway, so basically go with Slayers TV. How much of it is released here anyway? I know its been getting a release here as of late, but no idea how much. It'll probably be worth looking into getting the first DVD if i see it tomorrow anyways.

Slayers is a must watch for anyone who like fantasy comedy anime with overly powerful characters. Dragon Slave the fast way to level a city. I think my favourite quote from Zelgadis Greywords is "I have split ends".

I knew this was coming and I still made no effort to watch Slayers, *sigh*
I'll try now though, I have 2 weeks to get through at least one series.

I quite like slayers, although it can get a little repetitive imo. I think volumes for the first TV series are out in the UK at the moment in rather unappealing dvd sets. The american boxsets look much nicer imo.

I have a BESM of Slayers, gives a nice rundown of the ep and EXP of characters but i've never watched the show personally, but i've been meaning too

Though lets living this up a bit with TMBG

Another really awesome thing about Slayers is the music. Each series is blessed with pumping theme songs, character songs and (occasionally) insert songs. I spent an awful lot of money in my youth tracking them all down.

Also don't worry, Slayers really isn't a strange crossdressing school anime despite my fabulous avatar.

I have only seen the first six episodes of the first series and I really enjoyed watching as they made me laugh so much especially Lina and Gourry :D

I saw one Slayers episode from the free dvd in Neo a few months ago. Was going to get the dvds but i reckon i'll wait till the London Expo (as im saving up for that atm  )

Well, I prefer the Japanese compared to the English. Purely because of the way Lina in japanese pronounces Gourry's name.

I also liked the soundtracks, especially the intros. It was just classic j-pop in it's prime.

I would say the Movies/OAVs were a nice split from the TV series, as it had my favourite character in it... Naga the White Serpent! She has the greatest laugh ever protrayed, and her rivalry bewteen her/Lina was always entertaining/on-off.

The TV series felt a bit long-winded, but enjoyable nether-the-less. And it does get better and better each series. You also have a good mix of different characters, who at times react in their own way with each other, i.e. Xellos/Filia.

So I think it's worth the watch.

Although Gourry does end up in drag a few times. One of the best episodes is the one with the town only women are allowed in and it turns out most of them are guys in drag who's mums dressed them that way so they would not have to be sent away.

I've seen the slayers the first time at least 7 years ago, as it was airing back home. It was so absurd that it caught my attention and became a personal favourite very quickly.

That and the fact it's a fantasy. I am a sucker for anything with fantasy settings after all.

My favourite episodes were those that are not really related to any plot at all. Those are usually the most hilarious of all. Also, the OVA's where Naga appears are also to laugh your guts out.

Naga, Gourry, Xellos, there are so many good characters. the stories are so fun, that you can forget how bad the animation is (although I prefer to think it's due to its age, even though I know its not)

The first series is out in the Uk, while next is coming this year. If I'm not mistaken, MVM will release it all including revolution. no idea if they have the license for evolution-r yet.

So i've watched the first 6 episodes now and i do quite like it i have to say. Its not mindlessly random which is fine, but it is still random. The voice acting deserves a good mention too(japanese wise i mean) since the VA's certainly did a good job with it. The opening feels like one that kinda grows on you as well. Shame i'm nearly out of my budget for the month, i'd go get the next volume if i could now.

This man speaks the truth! I've only watched the movies/OVAs and Naga is great. I can't compare her to any of the other characters in the TV series' cause I haven't watched any of them yet.
I'm stuck between buying the OOP CPM/SS boxsets, Funi thinpacks or buying the R2's! What a dilemma!

PS: Listen to this!

= Pure Win :D

Yes, exactly.

My other thought was a general, permanent, sticky for the whole "themed weeks" idea, with links in the first (and only) post of that thread to each new discussion topic as they are created, allowing people to check what's been done, what's current, etc, and thus not needing to sticky and unsticky new threads every other week.

Just curious but has anyone else picked up the second Slayers DVD? and as such have any problems from episode 8 onwards? since mine isn't working now and its annoying. =/
