Sky's 50 Anime You Must See.

Helen McCarthy recommended watching Beautiful Dreamer and Angels Egg during her intro to Sky Crawlers and they are pretty hard to find.

The person who wrote this actually got help from another UK anime forum.
Another? The only ones I know of is this one and uk-anime.net
Bingo! :)

BTW I think it's a bit odd that a media company like Sky would list titles that one would have to use illegal means to view is all I'm saying. Sure they could dub their own, as I'm sure they have the studiios to do it in, but that's an expensive leap that I don't think they would take on their own. I can dream though. :)

They did say it had to have a western presense of some kind, so at least released here or the US. Still a lot of what has been out here is OOP and not necesarily fun to get hold of.

What 50 anime flicks would you choose then?
I think making it 50 was a horrible idea in the first place.

A top 20 at best,

looking through the list, there are so many films they could have included, and they could have added much better films :/

I like that quote this is Cultural History while we have Eastenders.

Yes Eastenders is shite, yet those who watch that shite will say anime is shite for being pure ignorant.

Wouldn't be surprised if there was a gawky England-obsessed fandom somewhere in Japan who downloads the latest 'Enders after they air.

If someone assisted the article-person - 'helping' him by suggesting Vexhille (w/e) - that just makes it worse. Seriously, how can a CG-fest, devoid of anything like a well executed story and in-depth characterization, be a "MUST WATCH!!!111' title for animay fans? Advent Children would've been better, and I say that with a pained expression because you just KNOW Geek would've been in this thread had it replaced it; supporting its inclusion and getting laughed at.

Vampire Hunter D isn't highly regarded; it's Bloodlust that anime fans praise. Paprika is memorable only for the trademark anime tentacle rape bit. Ninja Scroll is an over-rated flick loved for its violence/blood, and I only remember the breast sucking/attempted rape bit. The Last Vampire is just a 40 minute short, it lacking substance and having ugly facial art. 5cm Per Second has the most misleading title of all time, and it nearly sent me to sleep. Pom Poko is, like, three hours of pro-environment stuff; it only being mildly entertaining and not being thought of as great by most. Etc etc.

Junkers Come Here > Whisper of the Heart (IF THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!!!)
Ocean Waves > Over-rated Ghibli rubbish like Howl's and Spirited
Sword of the Stranger > Ninja Scroll
Bloodlust > D

...and a shitload of deleting, starting with Animatrix and other titles listed just to make up the numbers.

Yes - yes it was.

With those kinds of numbers, there's always going to be a lot of filler in the list. It. Never. Fails.

No

Also who the hell would watch Eastenders when they've got far better dramas to watch with far better characters and acting.

**** me the UK does make a lot of ****.

Important things first. I liked Eastenders when I was still following it. I just wish I'd stuck around to find out what happened to Max Branning, the cad.

In regards to the Top 50, any list, even by alleged experts, will appear highly dubious. Nonetheless, this one was a joke, actual comedy gold worth performing on Mock the Week. Mind you, it almost fooled me because it included the following greats:

Wings of Honneamise - truly, truly excellent, brimming with creative social commentary. Gainax' first production.

Macross Plus & Ninja Scroll - whether they are outstanding or not, they are classics of their era that any serious anime fan must watch. And Aion, Sword of the Stranger is a bland derivative. However, I do agree that Bloodlust should have been there ahead of Blood.

Only Yesterday - anything Takahata is beautiful, touching, and powerful. He's even better than Miyazaki.

The Castle of Cagliostro - yes! yes!

Millennium Actress - well, it's Satoshi Kon. I would utterly detest (not just disrespect) anybody who made a Top 50 list and didn't have at least one Kon work. Even if MA wasn't my favourite, it's his most lauded work.

Tokyo Godfathers - NOW we are talking.

Angel Egg - my God, this list could actually be... no, I will not succumb to Sky's pretenses at good taste!

Revolutionary Girl Utena - kekekeke, if they add Princess Tutu, I will be convinced....... uh, never mind.

Fail choices:

The End of Evangelion - look, mate, no. This bombastic sequence of stupidity has no place on a Top 50 list. Perhaps a 'Top 1000 **** you must see because they happened to be attached to a popular franchise', yes. Top 50, no.

Cowboy Bebop the Movie - if the Movie is on here, WHY IS THE SERIES NOT? My God, the travesty is so acute it cuts like a knife.

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Endless Waltz - whoever wrote this list is a first class nincompoop, a witless degenerate of sectionable incomprehensibility. Most likely a Sky intern who turned to some fanboys on DownloadNaruto.com for research. Again, read what I wrote for End of Eva.

Studio Ghibli - I'm sorry, did they just dedicate an entire section to Ghibli? Where's Madhouse? Where's Studio 4C?

Pokemon the First Movie - *laughter*

Legend of the Overfiend - *laughter dies*

Kai Doh Maru - *weeping*

Well, it could be worse. This could have been a list that actually mattered.

Yes, Soubz, they do suck, but that wasn't my ******* point. It's foreign/obscure, therefore special, is what I is getting at.

It's not like Japan knows what good acting is anyway.

Because it is a list of movies, not series.

Hell, Coronation Street (and let it be said I barely watch that) is better on the basis that people have an average life expectancy that reaches 20. Alfred Square was built on Indian Burial Grounds it's so cursed.

One (no idea which) was just doing a Misery parody for about two weeks so I think whatever one done that is the failure.

Well thank you at least they included Interstella 5555, good to see this film getting some credit, I mean it is one of THE coolest anime's ever after all!
