Sky's 50 Anime You Must See.

Just my opinion there, folks.
You go up a peg, you go down a peg. I can see that's going to be the story of our relationship. :p

I guess not from Sky, but it would be nice if Japanese anime buffs (we're talking discerning critics here rather than otaku) were to compile a list of must-see anime with a global audience in mind. That kind of thing might even lead to demand for previously unreleased series' over here.

I'm rather surprised that they included Urotsukidoji, but I'm glad to see some not so well known titles get in there. Looks like someone actually did their research.

The less Makoto Shinkai, the better. His movies are boring and overrated.

No Dragonball Z
No One Piece
No Fist of the north star
and No Naruto
WTF

Ofcourse they would say Evangelion is good. EVERYONE DOES!!!

The only good one there was Ninja Scroll. But they spelt Jubei wrong. They said Junbei! Mugs

Something being known worldwide, even to the English, doesn't make that something worth seeing. Most of the Ghibli films are only decent, some actually being totally over-rated. The fact that the Sky list contains so many Ghibli films and, Wings of Boredom aside, no real unknowns, makes it worthless. Glancing through the titles, you can't help but think that the person behind the choices hasn't seen very much.

Edit: All those Ghibli flicks, and no Ocean Waves?... Its exclusion wouldn't have anything to do with it being unknown, would it?

On matters aside this, I concur with the general consensus regarding the manner by which Sky has covered the topic. One generally disregards Sky anyway: my lack of a television precludes me taking an interest in their material.

Yeah i was thinking that myself,i thought it was just the Miyazaki and Takahata Ghibli movies in the list but i did notice Whisper of the Heart on the list so i have no idea why Ocean Waves should no be included.

I don't really see any point in defending his movies here, but I will say that I don't think it does the industry any favors to downplay one of the very few new creators who has come through making original stuff in the last few years just because you don't personally like what he does.

Calls 'em as I see 'em! 8)

Here's the trouble with these sorts of lists - we're always going to see a lot of stuff in them that divides opinion. That's just the nature of anime I guess.

I've spoken to people recently who'd say features like Paprika or Jin-Roh were the most mind-blowing movies they'd ever seen. they don't do anything for me, I'm afraid. And the movies I like don't necessarily go over well with other folks, either. All part of the fun!

Personally found the list to be about half and half: some choices were surprisingly welcome, others not so much (Legend of the Overfiend, The Pokemon Movie and Vexille? Really?)

But hey I'd certainly agree that almost all the choice were perhaps a little too obvious. Much as I may like Ghibli they were dominating the majority of the list with only a handful of lesser known gems thrown in.

Not liking something and not being able to see why something is good are not always the same thing.

This is just a list of 'whatever anime movies we can possibly think of'. They obviously just ripped it straight from a product listing of companies' movies. I love how they have said anime and not anime movies too. Wheres the shows? Sky fails so hard.

Sky Movies. It's a movie channel. It should be obvious it would be movies and not series.

I disagree, that's the nature of lists ;P Top Ten lists are NEVER accepted by everyone that's just life, if there was an accepted one it'd doubtless be taken to task for "obvious" choices etc.

Fair play to you sir for speaking your mind, and I also think Jin-Roh is pretty much one of the worst anime films I've seen. I can't deny it was well made, but I just didn't care about the story or the characters, maybe I didn't "get it" I don't know, but again that's my opinion and if you like it I ain't stopping you.

Also of Kon's flicks I don't think Paprika was "mind-blowing" per se I just found it very uplifting and imaginative. I found Perfect Blue minblowing for the way it was "shot" and the twists didn't come off for feeling cheap. PB is definitely my favourite Kon film, but again might not be your cup of tea and fair play to you =)

Shame that forum didn't recommend some more updated recent titles that one doesn't have to DL fansubs to see, or purchase bootlegs from e-bay.

...or purchase as the original unsubbed version, right? Scripts exist online for many if not all of those, for the dedicated who wish to support the fandom.

Though I agree in principle; it would have made a lot more sense if all 50 were actually available to buy in this country too.
