Simulwatch Planning Thread - Suggest & Discuss

The momentum appears to be with Fujiko, I'd be happy with that. I've only watched it once and that was the Manga release, it gives me a chance to revisit it and make sure my AL discs work. A Koike Lupin season doesn't sound like a bad idea at all, the thematic threads watching a couple of similar things seemed to work quite well. I would also be down for Megazone at some point because I have still not seen it.

Other ideas that come to mind after glancing at my shelves for a couple of minutes careful consideration are NieA_7 (finally available in the UK, thanks MVM) and/or Haibane Renmei on an ABe theme, the Patlabor OVAs and movies (which form a seperate continuity to the TV series, which would be far too long, I think a few people got the movies from the AL sale). All of those would be relatively quick watches, I was going to suggest Le Chevalier D'Eon as a bit of a wildcard, but it doesn't look like it's easy to (legally) obtain any more. Maybe Last Exile instead? Looks like that's on CR.

Absolutely not wedded to any of the above though. Some might even have been done and I've forgotten (or didn't take part), just throwing them out there as they're all things I wouldn't mind going back to with fresh eyes.

I'd be happy with all the above including Last Exile, as I have the physical editions for them that I am yet to watch. Travelling at the moment so could join in for the physical media stuff when I'm back around NYE. May be easier to start with a streaming one, which may be easier to access, so more people can join in and set a date to start - maybe from this Friday with the holidays coming up?

If it's difficult for people to commit, then I was thinking of a new thread like the viewing journal one, but for simulwatches, so if people feel strongly enough to chat/join in about something they're watching, they can.

Hmm. I wouldn’t be adverse to starting on Friday, but I’ve still to get a poll up to see what people want to go for. If we get a conclusive result by the end of tomorrow, we could aim for a Friday start, otherwise maybe wait another day or so and see what develops.

I like the idea of that - might be worth a try for one-shots like films in particular?

Sounds good, whenever people are free and happy to start would be great. I'll probably start the other casual thread soon when I get a chance in between travelling around to watch/rewatch one of the movies I'd mentioned.

How were you thinking of formatting it, like an “I’m planning on watching x this week if anyone else wants to join in” kind of deal?
Was thinking very casual but yes, that would be one of the options and another would be for others to join in retrospectively after someone posts "I have watched so and so and these are my thoughts on it", or even just comment from memory of having watched the same recently, if not the opportunity, desire or need to rewatch. Does that sound reasonable?

Ah, you do it however you want man, I was just interested to know how it would operate. I'm sure I'll join in if something catches my eye!

Apologies for the delay, but I've got the poll up. I've left out Dan Da Dan and Fate / Strange Fake for now, not out of lack of interest or attempted gatekeeping, but I think most folk interested in Dan Da Dan have probably been watching it as it's been going along, and I couldn't see definite details of how Fate was going to be released. Both could certainly be things to look at in future though.

A few suggestions for the next simulwatch. For accessibility, these are mostly shows that are streaming.

Dance Dance Danseur
Streaming on Crunchyroll and it's only 11 episodes, so it wouldn't take long. This show seems to have been massively overlooked, based on it not having a US blu-ray three years after broadcast. That probably means there's a risk of CR letting the licence expire at some point, so this would be a good one to watch before it vanishes. Here's my 10/10 review.

Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju
Streaming on Crunchyroll. Two cours. Another overlooked masterpiece with no home release. It's nine years old now, so I wouldn't be surprised if it vanishes from CR sooner rather than later.

Another angle I thought we could try with the simulwatches are genre retrospectives. Rather than watching entire series, we could watch the first three episodes of several landmark shows in a genre, in broadcast order, to compare how it evolved over time. A magical girl retrospective would be a good starting place, since some of the classic shows are finally streaming in the UK. For this one I'd suggest the first three episodes of each of the following:
  • Princess Knight (Crunchyroll) - possibly the first ever magical girl show, and a Tezuka one at that
  • Minky Momo (Crunchyroll) - early 80s classic
  • Sailor Moon (the TV series isn't streaming anywhere, but the movies are free on Tubi and the Sailor Moon R movie starts by introducing the characters and backstory)
  • Fancy Lala (free on Tubi) - late 90s show that's a great example of the pop idol sub-genre of magical girls
  • Precure (original 2004 season on Crunchyroll)
  • Princess Tutu (on HiDive)
  • Madoka Magica (not streaming, unfortunately)
  • Maybe Prisma Illya (on Crunchyroll) or another magical girl parody if anyone has suggestions
  • Any suggestions for a post-Madoka tragical girl show that shows its hand in the first three episodes? Yuki Yuna is probably the best post-Madoka show, but it's a slow burn, so maybe not the best pick when only watching three episodes. Maybe one of the derivative grimdark ones like Magical Girl Raising Project (on Crunchyroll), since that typifies the trend-chasing of the 2010s?

I’d probably bang the drum for The Woman Called Fujiko Mine again, although given that it too is on HIDIVE, the first Lupin series might also be a possibility- you get an interesting contrast between the weird episodes at the start which are faithful to the manga, then the Miyazaki run later on.

The magical girl season intrigues me too, it’s a genre I really know hee-haw about. It’s just a shame none of Cutie Honey is streaming, it’s a laugh (“But Universe is on HIDI-“ “I SAID NONE”).

Actually, if folk were okay with using a VPN, the main Sailor Moon series is available on Tubi. As is the Black Jack OVA, if that was any interest.

Heheh and now I remember why I added it to my watchlist!
Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju
I'm actually watching this currently after having kept it on my watch list for far too long! Perfectly happy to hold off or restart for a simulwatch.

Sounds interesting, would be very happy to give this format a go.

I was still looking at some older anime like Haibane that I've been meaning to watch forever, such as texhnolyze, rahxephon, welcome to NHk, rumbling hearts and watamote - don't know if those would float anyone else's boat for a conventional simulwatch? Another honourable mention would be one that @Professor Irony has suggested just before our lull - Sonny Boy - this would be pure simulwatch fodder, though I'd probably be too muddled to be coherent heh.

Overall, I'm quite chilled and happy to go with whatever simulwatch people want to do. I quite enjoyed the Haibane one, being able to take it at varying paces did help me fit it around my schedule, so look forward to joining in with whatever the group decides.
