Rejoice Social outsiders, it's the Autumn series thread!

Why is it that I can't even be motivated to start one episode from any of those series? I'm interested in Winter Sonata, Kimi no Todoke and Blue Literature.

I'm trying to find the passion to watch Kimi no Todoke. Winter Sonata isn't out and I'm sad that I can't find a fan subbing group who doing Blue Literature. Oh **** it, I'll go through my backlog of anime DVDs and finish Tehxnolyze in about five months or something.

You have to remember that as an older fan I'm used to Rumiko Takahashi's art style and sense of humour, so seeing a familiar face like Inu Yasha is a tonic amongst the weak shows in the first part of the list. I also like Ninja Scroll, though I cannot think of anything at all it has in common with the other two you mentioned. It's far older than Inu Yasha and has a very different audience in mind.

Ahh, so its more like a nostalic thing? To be honest i know where your coming from, i guess i just don't appreciate Inu Yasha half as much as i do for the authors other work. The character design is different between the two and i guess i just prefer the Ranma design (talking about main characters here) Oh and i added Ninja Scroll to the fold because of its age, nothing really to do with the anime itself.

Hey Lupus called me that, I never said it ;)

I almost never log in during the day because I have work; I tend to patrol out of hours. I check in dozens of time a day though and read everything. Even the more surreal parts of that weird three word story thing which slightly disturbs me most of the time.

R

lol hey don't blame Lupus for your characteristics :p long before you where an admin people saw you as the mature woman around here (possibly with the exception of Aion, believing you to be a male lol)
And it's for that reason that your seen as a mother figure.

I guess its understandable that your busier at work now-a-days, with the recent incidents with post and things...
Regardless however.....show your "children of the forums" some attention every now and then ;)

Seitokai no Ichizon is pretty decent so far, but Darker than Black 2 is the anime I've been looking forward to this season.

Letter Bee is good so far, it's just starting up with the main plot.

Book of Bantora's getting boring for me even though it's 2 eps, but It'll probably get better when it gets further into the story.

I'm watching pretty much most of the fall season lol.

just seen Fairy Tail myself

you could tell who did it just from the fact it has Plue in it :D

Que the "hand over the bug? that's a dog" line

strange but fun, think i'll give this a shot

So far, I've picked up four titles. I plan on picking up two more: Blue Lit. and Winter Sonata.

I rank the four I've seen so far like this...

[1] Kimi ni Todoke - 2/? - 9/10

Easily the best of the bunch. Unlike in the case of Sasameki, a far slower and far more depressing yuri romance, Kimi made time move quickly, its combination of comedy, cuteness and drama making it a winner. I have a soft spot for romance done right, and the relationship between the main two in this seems to be heading in a pleasing direction. Also, I like the shoujo art style, as well as the use of cute round faces (like in Kare Kano) for humorous scenes.

I love how the 'scary' female lead has changed early on, becoming more sociable after a push from her soon-to-be boyfriend. All because of him, she's made friends and has started to lose her poor image. My only issue is that can't see a popular guy going for an unpopular girl in real life... well, I guess he has already explained he fell for her when he first saw her; when he started at school and she smiled at him. Love at first sight is a good enough reason for him to act how he did, I guess. Anyway, I'm cheering the them on - like when watching any good romance, I want the two to get together.

My only fear is that it'll go the way of Kare Kano, starting strong - 100% focused on the relationship of the main two - and then heading into needless 'filler' land, with the main relationship advancement being replaced with the development of secondary characters in order to drag out the story. I hope not but the fast paced start, as well as the excellent blend of comedy and drama has certainly reminded me of Kare Kano.

[2] Nyan Koi! - 2/12 - 8/10

This series has surprised me. After reading its description and seeing its average MAL rating, I expected nothing. But what I got was a very nice looking, amusing little anime.

The art and colour usage impressed me from the start, and it didn't shock me to discover AIC are behind it. I really like the character designs, ranging from the likeable idiot lead (you know, the usual high school comedy male type) to his violent childhood 'friend'.

The humour involving cats ordering the lead to do tasks tends to put a smile on my face. When the lead had to explain to his cute, cat-loving crush that the cats didn't like her attention, with the cats rushing him, it amused me. When his tsundere childhood friend saw him talking to cats and he commented that he looked like a retard, it amused me. When the lead tried to stop his tsundere from walking away from him and only managed to get them both soaked by water thrown from a window, it amused me. There's a lot of simple yet funny content.

It seems like a new girl is going to get introduced in each of the first episodes, forming a harem around the lead as his cat problems continue. But I don't mind - in fact, I'm looking forward to it. If more basic yet well-handled characterization and enjoyable comedy keeps flowing, I'm more than happy to continue watching.

[3] The Sacred Blacksmith - 2/12 - 6-7/10

From the moment I saw the female leads' armour, designed to fit around her huge chest rather than protect her from harm, I knew what I was in for - a lot of ecchi, perverted jokes, some action and a simple, most likely dumb plot. The only reason I'm still watching is because I like RPGs, I like medieval settings and I don't say no to boobs.

Honestly, it isn't awful, but it embodies a lot of what's wrong with anime. Made to please simpletons and perverts, there's very little to recommend included. The action looks nice from time to time but, up to yet, the action has been let down by the enemy waiting for the good guys do get ready - not attacking even when the girl who was supposed to be holding a monster off was looking the other way. So far, the high point of the series has been when the female leads' armour cracked, revealed her breasts to all, and she smacked the male onlooker.

I might stick with it, I might drop it. I suppose it's short enough to survive, providing the story doesn't kill my brain.

[4] Sasameki Koto - 2/13 - 6-7/10

Taking into consideration my liking of lesbians, I expected great things from this. But, so far, all I've gotten is crying, lunch eating, staring, cross-dressing and predictability. It's obvious how this series will end to all, and the episode-to-episode content leading up to the finale strikes me as weak. Why should I care about the generic girl with glasses and her ditzy friend? The girl with glasses is dull and her girl-loving friend has been no more than annoying. Without a flashback or two fleshing them two and their friendship out, there's nothing of interest about their relationship. The dull colours and lack of comedy haven't helped the series out.

Even Blacksmith has kept me entertained, not looking at the episode timer. However, with this I've felt bored, and I checked the time a few times during the episodes. Unless I get into it in the next few episodes, I can see me dropping this. As much as I like the idea of lesbian romance, I think I'll be sticking with male-female love this season in the way of Kimi.

After watching the first episode of Kimi ni Todoke I wanted to vomit. It's just so sickeningly sweet, all flowery and sparkly like every shoujo romance ever, and I'm far too cynical for that. And Sawako never shuts the hell up. More Stand Alone Complex please, IG.

Tbf, your idea of romance is a hentai, or at least something with constant boobs and/or sex. You have not the stomach for a steady romance, lacking any service.

I strongly recommend people ignore the view of the above poster as he has no taste. He doesn't even realize Sawako is voiced by Noto and that hearing her is a good thing.

(In all seriousness, it's the best anime of the season, according to ratings and 'experts' views. This season is ****, I admit, but I've given it a 9/10 so far, and I don't give many. It might turn out to be Kare Kano done right.)

To Aru Kagaku no Railgun - Seen 2 episodes so far and about to watch the 3rd. Seems OK so far. It's pretty standard J.C. Staff fare, but that's not always a bad thing. Not actually seen To Aru Majitsu no Index yet.

Nyan Koi - Up to episode 2 but likely to drop it. I was expecting more Seto no Hanayome since it's an AIC production but was disappointed. There's not a lot about this series that's worthy of mention since every character is an archetype of an archetype of an archetype and the comedy is quite bland and very typical harem/romcom humour.

Maybe they're all plain girls with no self confidence. I mean, the male lead is a total non-entity, yet he needs only to say a few kind words and the ghost girl is blushing and spacing out like a retard. There's no development to their relationship; it just happens. And it's hideously cheesy.

Aion, that is an... er... eclectic selection of this season's shows, that's for sure.

As I said somewhere (probably the viewing journal thread), I have the same opinion of Kimi ni Todoke as fabby does, but I'll give it some time in case it improves.

It's his kindness that makes him special. Where as the rest of the class judged Sawako based on rumours, he was the only one to not listen to them, even being nice to her. He was also the only one to defend her, doing so in public. Someone being that nice in that situation, damaging his own reputation by doing so, isn't normal.

When you have an entire class against you and one of the most popular guys in it is genuinely kind to you, it would make an impression. He looks good and isn't planning on using her - I say that makes him more than a "non-entity" in her eyes. Add in the fact that this is a school romance and both are inexperienced and you should get why she's blushing.

No development? The first few episodes were spent on developing their relationship, going from them not knowing each other to them hanging out together and becoming very close. Sawako has become far more talkitive since the start, expressing her feelings instead of just staying silent. She'll no doubt improve more as the series progresses.

Kimi is the sort of series where the pair are going to develop along with their relationship, hence me linking it to Kare Kano. Rather than two popular students, this time around it's one popular and one unpopular, and I'm looking forward to how it turns out. My only worry is, like I said before, that it'll turn out exactly like Kare Kano - first focusing 100% on the main two, them becoming very close... and then focusing 100% on developing new characters and their relationships. If it doesn't go the way of Kare Kano, I can see it becoming a favourite of mine. Time will tell.

Maes: I'm not gonna lie: I had to look up that word. I thought you'd misspelled 'eccentric' at first. You could've just said varied... :|

You know, I just watched the second episode of Kimi no Todoke and, for reasons I can't explain, it didn't repulse me in the same way that the first episode did. That must sound like damning with faint praise, but it was, dare I say, enjoyable enough to make me want to tune in (so to speak) next week. Or this week. Whenever.

But I still contend that, at this point, the characters don't have much about them. Sawako's nice, shy, and withdrawn, while the bishounen is nice, confident, and outgoing. It's pure wish-fulfillment for girls. The main reason I enjoyed those early episodes of Kare Kano was that Yukino and Soichirou are multi-faceted characters, and this was apparent from the start. From what I've seen of Kimi ni Todoke, the primary couple are almost artificially nice and... that's it. Sweet, yes. Compelling, not really.

It needs some romantic tension to keep me interested. I need to see another side of the characters. You're probably right that the side characters will at some point take the spotlight, but that might not necessarily be a bad thing.

And I must say that I'm impressed with IG's visuals, as I expected I would be. Though I'm not a huge fan of the shoujo style, at least not in manga where the characters have freakishly huge eyes and the backgrounds are sparse, they've done a fantastic job with it. The direction is excellent.

Seen so far
Darker than Black S2 Esp 1-2
Interesting change in main character. While close enough to be a moe loli girl, but than the sweet maker she isn't. Also interesting and glad to see they have dropped the two episode arc format from the last season.
Will continue watching.

Letter Bee eps 1-2
Meh. While not bad per se, wholly uninspiring, and since they spent 2 episodes focusing on two characters and failing to get me to care about any of them doesn't bode well for the rest of the series .
Dropped

The Book of Bantorra eps1.5
Was suprised to see that this wasn't made by Gonzo, as it seems to bear the marks of one of their shows. Betting the one who everyone says is evil isn't, the lass incharge of the 'good' guys is, and the one moping like shinji will probably save the world (one someone gives him a well deserved kick up the arse).
Dropped like a sack of rocks

Anyone checked out Sora No Otoshimono? It seems to have a very strong Ah! My Goddess/Chobits vibe to it

Plus...you dont see many ED's with quite literally flying panties lol

I'm only watching Kimi ni Todoke atm, and I agree with both Aion and fab. I'm enjoying it a lot, but there also moments that are a bit too sickly. Still it's not exactly a deal breaker, it's a good anime already and the progression of the story has been good so far.

FU and you ':|' face, Maes. To be polite, you're supposed to fake laughter in those internet situations. Are you an e-tard or something?

------

After watching episode three, I kind of agree with "fab" (it's FABIO - get it right, ffs!), too. To be more precise, I didn't feel the first two episodes were overly sweet but some of the cuteness in the third episode rubbed me up the wrong way.

Since I'm a lazy git, here are three short MAL posts, quoted:

Sacred & Knightly Women 3 said:
I'm close to dropping the series. The story is reminiscent of a basic RPG outline, the characters are all shallow, the two main female characters wear skimpy clothes - one of which supposedly being a sword of mass destruction - and there's very little of interest. Without any decent action and no 'you saw my boobs!' humour this time around, I found this to be the weakest episode thus far. Honestly, all this has going for it is perverted humour.

Pussy Harem 3 said:
The weakest episode so far, though it wasn't bad. An older woman got added to Junpei's ever-growing harem, some more cats were helped and we were shown the (predictable) way Junpei met his dream girl. Entertaining, but I enjoyed the first two episodes more -- The first introduced the cat stuff and had some funny moments, the second introduced a loveable/hot tsundere. Compared to what went before, half an episode with a big-breasted mail woman didn't cut it.

The next episode looks... crazy. Waaaaay over the top. I'm eager to discover why Junpei appeared to be eating a pussy cat (see what I did there? lolz) at the very end. The best kind of tsun-cat, if I do say so myself.

Karing School Luv Tales 3 said:
When I posted about how much I loved the first few episodes on another forum, a friend commented that he found it too sweet and flowery. I disagreed.

After watching the third episode, I can kind of see where he was coming from. The start was far too lovey dovey for me, with Sawako blushing over eye contact and even blushing when her name was written. I'm all for cute romantic goings on, but as a guy I have my limits.

Episode three really seemed like episode 2+1 rather than a brand new episode to me. As much as I enjoyed it, not much new was added. Sawako was shown to be making a few more friends, getting along better, and the jealous girl's (from the end of episode two) plan has started. I craved more after the first two episodes, which moved at a fast pace. Really, the events of episode four could've got started an episode early.

And...

Aoi-something / Blue Literature / The Anime With The New Yagami Light

Not sure how I feel about this just yet. It's different from most other anime I've watched, with a dark vibe and realism given to it by its real world setting. Being different from the norm is a plus point when most animes are about school girls, I guess...

I didn't like the music at the start; when it sounded more like it'd fit an older American setting rather than a Japanese one. And did anyone notice the very similar sounding piece to a certain Sweeney Todd track? I know I did.

Anyway, I like depressing stories, and this is certainly depressing. It's too early to make any judgements, with very little content to go on, but I liked how the lead expressed how worthless he thought his life was, helped by the suicidal woman he bumped into by chance. It'll be interesting to see how this turns out if his dislike for both himself and others leads him to becoming a serial killer.

I didn't quite get how he linked the woman he pushed to the five women who raped him as a child just because she called him cute and plain, adding that he was tempted to kill her. I guess he just thinks of all women as the same. I'm hoping another sub group subs it in order for me to be able to compare the subs and, hopefully, get better video quality -- the 720P version struck me as being SD.

Another aspect I'm unsure about is the setting. I get that people are against the government because of money issues, but I could use some more details. I guess I'll Google for 'Showa' + 'Revolt' and see where that gets me...

In any event, I'm looking forward to the next episode... well, I'm interested at least. :D
