FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST ( 2003 )

perfect 10

this series was one of my first animes i watched on tv back in the day, and even watching it after a few years it brings good memorys. its been i think a year and a half since i watched this series and its still amazing to this day.

if you haven't watched this series yet i suggest you do otherwise you'll regret it. even tho it doesn't follow close to the manga its still amazing. this series has drama, tearjerkers, comedy, action, memorable characters, intense story.

Interesting, I thought both Alpha animes were pretty awful =/ I can't actually remember which I hated more though lol. Was generations the one without Ryu's long lost brother? I THINK I liked that one less...

Yeah Alpha is the one with Ryus long lost brother. Generations is when Ryu has to fight Akuma for some reason. I wonder why people hate alpha so much though. I love it! i admit the plot is confusing with the characters going on about the Dark hadou, but once you look past that it has some great fight scenes and animation. I remember people saying they didn't like it because its too much like DragonBall z

Mmm, what I remember the fights were good, but there was a lot of "let's stand on mountains and stare..INTENSELY" ALso gratuitous Chun-li butt all over the show. As far as Generations is concerned, Chun-li is just a talking ass and not the Shrek kind.

first squad

it was ok but there was so many unfinished things and cliffhangers

6/10

legend of the millennium dragon

i liked the story it kinda reminds me of Princess Mononoke in some ways and i liked the effects and animation its defiantly worth a watch.

8.5/10

bleach season 6

there are some filler in this season but its still fun to watch, its not as exciting as the soul society ark but it has its moments, there are loads of things going on all at once but i believe that what makes it intense,

I finally finished watching the series and i have to say, It is one of the best animes i've seen in my entire life. I loved all the characters, the animation was always fluid and fantastic, the fight scenes were F*****G EPIC, The plot was clever and emotional and the ending was perfect. If you havnt seen this anime i have only this to say: WATCH IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not the last anime I saw, but I thought I'd put this in here as it seemed to be the most appopriate place.

I've written the "Reader's Review" for the latest edition of NEO Magazine, covering The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne (Blu-Ray)

Thoroughly enjoyed this. The first 5 episodes were excellent, the last was not as good unfortunately which let me down a little and stopped this from scoring higher than it has.

Really wish there was more of this show, or something along the same lines of a detective/investigating agency taking on new cases all the while an overarching storyline is playing out. GITS:SAC is the only show that I can think of that would come close to that.

cool stuff Ian, but it's a little small for me to read.

Ponyo

First thing I need to stress is just how beautiful this film is. In fact I think it just may be the most gorgeous Ghibli film (or indeed animation full stop) I have yet seen. The colour's are that of the most vibrant psychedelia yet also the softest watercolour, the motion taking place in every shot is the most vivid and effortlessly dreamlike. The film is a constant joy to behold but during it's most epic scenes my eyes were practically watering at the animated majesty I was beholding.
The story is a simple and timeless one, yet the characters are so well visually designed (especially the Bowie- esque Fujimoto) and imbued with such believable warmth and likability that it's almost impossible-even for a grown man- to fight against Ponyo's tide washing you away. The story is one of good nature and supreme innocence, but most crucially it's also completely sincere, which is something the majority of childrens tale's to hit the big screen never seem to be.

Another thing this film has confirmed for me, aside from Miyazaki's visual mastery and unfettered imagination, is that he is undoubtedly one of the greatest in the world at capturing the essence of children and translating it to animated form. I'm sure anyone who spend's time among young children would instantly see part's of those children (if not their child selves) in Sosuke or Ponyo. Indeed, the movie as a whole could be summed up as being a joyous child.

It may lack the in depth and subtle commentaries and allegories of your Mononoke's and Spirited aways's. But it more than makes up for that with the sight of a jubilant Ponyo dashing along the top of tidal waves. In other words, Vintage Miyazki.

9/10

It's worth pointing out that I watched this in dub (thanks to Film Four) and I'm glad I did. The dub is spot on for the most part and with a film like this it would be a crime to have to take your eye's of the action, even for a second to read subtitles.

My same exact thoughts, too bad that a lot of good series can't get the quality ending they deserve. I would add that animation and music were very good.

Almost wish I hadn't got Rin on DVD now. :)

Puella Magi Madoka Magicka - 9/10

I will start by saying I am NOT particularly fond of the Mahou Shoujo genre, however I watched this for it's dark reputation and I'm glad I did.

It's not a show without flaws, however it is well executed, the visuals are truly shaft, the background music worked well, if some of it was forgettable bar the anthems, and it reminded me of one of the strongest reasons I enjoy anime; unlike western studios, eastern studios do not carry to the same adversion to ambiguous, bittersweet or even tragic endings, and Madoka is no different carrying a strongly bittersweet ending, although not up there with the likes of Chrno Crusade, which shares some themes in the ending despite major differences elsewhere.

As far as I'm aware, Bakemonogatari and Puella Madoka both came out almost consecutively from Shaft, and they've done well with this pair. Both are very good, with potential to be long remembered in thier respective genres, although possessing different strenghts and weaknesses.

Visually interesting, surprisingly dark for it's genre, reasonably decent story for it's length and ambition, and an enjoyable watch even if not what I plan to necessarily return to :)

I hope Nisemonogatari turns out to be half as good as Puella or Bakemonogatari; if it holds up to these previous 2 shows, it could be rather good indeed.

bleach
episodes 1 - 151 and movie 1

i enjoy this series alot really i do i like the cool music, the characters, the swords, the fights, the story in each ark ( not including filler ) but if i was to count how many filler episodes there were id say (iv watched) id say 60 episodes. i didn't mind most of the fillers but there were a few that was painful to watch like the *cake episode*. but other then that i really like this series its not as good as naruto shippuden but i do enjoy watching it.

the movie wasn't bad but i see it as a long episode

you could say bleach is my guilty pleasure.

series 9/10
movie 1 7/10

Only Yesterday

Certainly one of the more interesting Ghibli films, in that for about half of the film the main character is an adult and the child sections are all flashbacks. I suppose this makes this film the most grown-up of the Ghibli films, with the possible exception of Grave of the Fireflies. There are some amusing sequences, some tender ones. While not the best Ghibli film it is a good, decent effort.

Score: 7 / 10
