Kaiji Ultimate Survivor 10/10

All I can say is amazing! I didn't want it to end. A classic example of how when you gamble, you need to know when to quit. Especially if you are ahead.
It looked great aswell, Madhouse are definitely my favourite studio. Everything considered, this immediately enters my top three favourite series. I wonder if it will ever get licensed over here? Probly not, which is a shame as it is one of the most exciting & engrossing animes I have seen, and deserves a wider audience.

I feel like slitting my wrists after spending so much time on this review; knowing full well like two people will actually bother reading it.

MUST...... NOT..... REVIEW.... AGAIN.... SSGDGFDGFD

"When I saw the pictures and the explanation of the story, I thought it was a coarser, scarier and darker anime. But once we started, I realized it had less violence and more heart." - Mie Sonozaki

-----

Before anything else, you need to understand the following: Witchblade is, first and foremost, a character-driven drama, rather than an action series. It has some fighting, yes, but the vast majority of the episodes are spent focusing on character development. Everything else comes a distant second. At first the suggestion is that it's going to be a The Devil Lady, 'monster of the week' type, but that isn't the case.

Whoever decided to market Witchblade as a violent, fan-service heavy title wasn't too bright. Likewise, the person who came up with the idea of taking the title of a popular American comic and then creating an entirely different story, with an all-new cast, didn't make the wisest of moves. By attempting to pass-off a slow-paced, heartfelt and very human drama as a generic action title with added boobs, all Gonzo achieved was getting the wrong type of viewers; pushing away the types who would appreciate a family drama about a mother loving her daughter with all her heart and being willing to do anything for her.

Judging the series based on the revealing Witchblade forms and boob sizes, it's hard not to expect an utterly tasteless anime. But you know what? Sex only occurs ONCE during the entire series, and NOTHING gets shown--the two involved kiss and then it's the morning after. That pretty much sums Witchblade up: there's a lot of cleavage but, that aside, Witchblade is surprisingly tasteful. In truth, there isn't even a huge amount of action once series gets past the introduction period.

:: Story :: 6/10

Six years prior to the start of Witchblade, Tokyo had been left devastated by a catastrophic earthquake. Two people were found alive at the ground zero of the quake: a 17-year-old woman (later named Masane; her having lost all of her pre-disaster memories) and a baby (Rihoko). Only the maternity diary held by the woman pointed towards them being related...

Once the series gets going, the two are heading back to Tokyo on the run; desperate to stay together and not be separated by the child welfare organization (created after the quake, to 'help' children). As jobless Masane struggles to keep Rihoko, she encounters the 'monster' responsible for a string of nasty murders, and that's when what had been sleeping within her for six years awakens--the power of the 'Witchblade'; something that has existed since the beginning of time, selecting its (female) hosts and forcing its hosts to give into their lust and destructive urges. Masane then gets caught between two organizations who seek the Witchblade, ending up working for one (Douji: a major weapons supplier) to support her life with Rihoko and hunted by the other (NSWF: in charge of the child welfare organization and with links to genetic research).

I'll be honest here: the story of Witchblade is full of anime silliness, ranging from fat men disguised as killer microwaves, genetic experiments, and women who use 'Cloneblades'--lesser, copied versions of the ever mysterious Witchblade. It's never explained why the weapons Masane hunts target random females, or why the Witchblade only selects women as 'hosts'... or what the Witchblade actually is. And I couldn't help but see most of the twists coming in advance; the writers actually intentionally spelling out how the series would end in order to impact on the viewers' feelings progressively rather than shock them.

While it does have a B-movie sort of entertainment factor in its favour, if I were to score Witchblade based only on its story, it wouldn't be very flattering... But this is where the negative ends because, like I've already pointed out at the start, the characters are where it's at. The story is no more than a means to an end; the backdrop for lots of excellent drama.

:: Characterization :: 9.5/10

Masane (nicknamed 'Melonie' because of her boob size!), the lead of the story, has nothing going for her apart from her six-year-old daughter, Rihoko. She isn't incredibly sharp, has no skills of note and, really, only has her love for her daughter. The child welfare organization try to separate them; Masane's ability to transform into a scantily-clad, sexulized version of herself (thanks to the mysterious Witchblade attached to her wrist) puts her in danger and powerful corporations involve her in their troubles, but, no matter what stands in her way, she fights to protect and give a better life to the one she loves the most.

Loud, simple-minded, direct type of characters tend to be hard to like and easy to hate, but Masane is very endearing. There are many simple things that made her into a likable character, such as when she went into a blind panic after learning that her daughter had been hurt; Masane ending up running out of her apartment barefoot. She's often called a primate by her 'boss', Takayama, because of how she acts without thinking and says what's on her mind, but that's what's so lovable about her: her honesty, maternal instincts and selflessness. It's little surprise that she eventually wins over even Takayama with her natural personality as the series progresses - she's just impossible to not like and respect.

The supporting cast backing up Masane aren't too shabby, either. Rihoko basically 'mothers' her own mother by shopping, cooking and caring for the more absent-minded Masane, and her being so mature at such a young age makes her have instant likability. Takayama plays the role of Masane's stern and somewhat awkward middle-aged boss, giving her orders to hunt down rogue 'weapons' for money, and it's his banter with her that provides much of the comic relief--the two later also becoming much closer; the writers doing a wonderful job of humanizing him and showing his softer, caring side as the series progresses. The rest of the cast are less developed and involved than the main three but all play important roles; the residents where Masane and Rihoko live, though never getting much time individually, are responsible for the 'family atmosphere' always being in the air during the more relaxing periods, for example.

:: Art / Animation + Sound:: 8.5/10

The first thing that made me think, 'Wow, Witchblade might not be so horrible, despite the title and fan-service!' was its opening. I watched/listened to the opening by chance, and as soon as I heard the fast-paced, exciting beat and saw the visuals that accompanied the music, which included a close-up of Masane's eye and a tear coming out of it, I just knew I had to watch it. The first opening is THAT good--even the 'GIVE ME YOUR XTC!!!' lyrics going with the show itself. Gonzo went on to regret changing it halfway through since they replaced the far less impressive second opening with the first for the final episode.

In terms of the overall art and animation, the best word to use when describing it is consistent. Why? Because Gonzo are known for running out of budget and forgetting to animate towards the end. That wasn't the case with Witchblade, though, since the final episode featured fluid animation; Gonzo not being reduced to showing movement through lines on the screen and actually showing the characters running. Aside from a few instances of laziness where there wasn't animation and a few stills were linked, it was great to watch. Even Japan's obsession with breast jiggling got attention throughout! And, though I can't say Masane's HUGE, could-suffocate-with-ease breasts appealed to me personally, overall the art did look pleasing.

As for the soundtrack, I have to say: it's excellent. One track that stands out is one used for action quite frequently; a track with an eerie edge and... a woman breathing in an 'erotic' manner in the background - the track having an action-oriented beat. I was ALWAYS pumped for the action - my attention focused - simply because of the music. Towards the end, I recall drums starting beating after what had been a nice 'family life' sort of episode, and I just knew some sweet action would be coming my way. If a soundtrack is good enough, it can make something great into something even greater, and that's the case with Witchblade.

:: Overall :: 9/10

Witchblade has its flaws: the story isn't anything special, Gonzo appeared to run out of ideas at the death and just ended it, and the near enough naked girl-on-girl battles might be off-putting for some. However, the good by far outweighs the bad, and the characterization is at such a level that, if you're anything like me, you won't give a toss. Once the introduction was over and time had been given for attachment to the characters to form, I was too engrossed in their struggles to concern myself with negative thoughts about a robotic monster with the head of a bug and the like.

To sum it all up: If you go into Witchblade expecting nothing, you might just get everything in return. It's always rewarding to find a gem, and in my eyes Witchblade is a gem that deserves to have more people look at it. Do yourself a favour and watch it!

I intend to purchase Witchblade once / if the UK boxed set drops to a sensible, sub £30 price. Your review certainly makes me look forward to it more than I was doing, I wasn't particularly expecting anything out of the ordinary.

I kind of wish I'd waited for the box set now, tbh. I can't knock getting the first half of the series for a tenner new, and getting volume four for £2 wasn't bad, either!... But MVM's box sets always look nice, and I had the chance to beat my beloved Fabriluna to the art box + DVDs on SS.

The annoying thing is, because volume five still hasn't even been sent, I ended up watching four episodes on my PC. :-|

It'll most certainly be better for you to watch than Noir; a bad choice for any inactive 'anime fan' to go with. With your general high scoring of everything, your 7/10 is equivalent to my 5/10. And my 9/10 is equivalent to your 11/10.

Sorry, didn't mean it like that. It's just that your comment on the cleavage and tastefullness present in Witchblade actually surprised me. I've got the first 4 DVD's waiting for the last 2 vols before I actually start watching this, but I'll wait for the price to come down a little before I get them.

If I See You in My Dreams (OVA) - 6.5-7/10

This is something of a guilty pleasure; I admit. It has the same sort of premise as Maison Ikkoku and its ilk, the main difference between it and MI being the OVERLY pathetic lead. I'm betting I'd enjoy the manga a lot if I gave it a chance.

This story is the total opposite of how a real story about some guy who wears glasses bigger than his face and lusts after some hot chick would go. In real life, if a loser cried about being lonely to a girl, waited outside a girls house AND sulked about the girl getting out of the car of a fit, sports car owner, he'd get a restraining order against him and/or be laughed at.

...But this is anime we're talking about, and as luck would have it, the girl happens to be a hot 22-year-old virgin, who just so happened to live the life of a stealth virgin prior to encountering the lord of all loser-kind.

If not for me having a soft spot for rom-coms and seeing the obvious similarities between its story and MI (a loser, a woman who doesn't want a man and a fit guy with a nice car as a rival...), I'd score it lower. But, me being me, I 7/10'd it, ordered the TV series and plan on reading the higher rated manga for more MI/Love Hina-esque goodness.

Shootfighter Tekken: 6/10

MAL List Tag said:
Embodies practically everything that's wrong with typical shounen action titles, ranging from moves being shouted to the lead *somehow* making bad people good with his fists, but is highly entertaining in a 'so bad, it's good!' type of way.

I'm still not exactly what the plot of Shootfighter was. I think it involved a pro-wrestler getting butthurt over being beaten by a martial artist and then sending his underlings to fight the martial artist many years on... only to decide to fight himself in the end and get owned by the martial artist's son, Naruto.

Whatever it was about, there's one thing that's hard to deny: it entertained me. You've gotta love something that tries to be a serious, fists and bloods affair... and then tries to make EVERY evil villain have some sort of tragic background that Naruto SOMEHOW brings out while beating the **** out of them, whilst creating remixed versions of moves he'd just learned from someone in order to win the fight.

It was bad, but also good - like I expected. I mean, c'mon - it has a guy throw a helicopter, watch it blow up and then jump in the ring to fight! It reminded me of watching Bastard and, though being aware of how bad it was, liking it because of it.

Maetel Legend: 6.5/10

MAL List Tag said:
I enjoyed it and found it interesting because it explained the back-story of Maetel. However, it moved very slowly, the story wasn't remarkable and the animation was limited. Also, the human>robot transformation process was silly.

This is another 'got enjoyment out but, at the same time, was bothered by its flaws' anime. It was nice discovering that Emeralda is Maetel's sister - which explained something that occurred in Galaxy Express 999 - and it provided insight into what happened to the queen of Maetel's world.

However, if you viewed it without thinking of it as an extra that cleared some things up, it wasn't so great. There were lots of repeated frames, despite it only being a two episode OVA, and not an awful lot happened during the 85ish minute story. People got turned into robots to survive, Maetel and her sister resisted, the queen lost her soul and Maetel and her sister escaped - the end.

I'm glad I watched it, and I wish SS stocked the other Harlock OVAs, but I won't be in any great hurry to re-watch it...

Ancient Books of Ys II: 5/10

MAL List Tag said:
"...after 700 years, evil has much more power than good. MWAHAHAHA!" -- More of the same. It got old fast.

More cringe-worthy dialogue, and more of the same overall.

I'm still pondering (not really) how the loss of something created by Goddesses could result in the Goddesses losing their powers, or how Goddesses could be weaker than monsters that came into existence because of what they created... I guess logic just doesn't work so well with JRPG adaptations.

It was okay to watch once, and I don't mind owning an anime JRPG adaptation, but I seriously doubt I'll ever watch something where everything negative is referred to as evil ever again. It was amusing in the case of Ys, but I was bored of it by the time Ys II arrived and got chucked into my DVD player.

It's no wonder the Ys IV OVA got a trailer and then seemingly got canceled during production. The world REALLY doesn't need another Ys anime...

Saw Paprika, loved it, I'd give it a high 8/10 I was in a bit of a funk, and this movie really lifted my spirits. The opening alone was just awesome *hums the theme*

Giant Robo: Ginrei Special - 6/10

3 short OVAs produced to keep the fans satisfied during the tortourously long wait between some episodes of Giant Robo. And, I guess, as an opportunity to show Ginrei in various states of undress without having to cheapen the series proper. I'd seen the first episode--a 20-minute piece of fanservice fluff in which my favourite character, Alberto, features prominently--on Manga's VHS release of episode 7, but it's the first time I've seen the other two.

And they're a mixed bag. The second episode is a frequently hilarious parody, while the third is a more serious (and, frankly, dull) affair. I can't see myself rewatching the disc very often, if at all, but it was well worth the few quid I spent just for that second episode and to see those characters in, um, a somewhat different light. Non-fans need not apply.

Basilisk
8/10

Ive been wanting to see this for 2 years now and after seeing it, it was a good show. Just not as good as i thought it would be.

Good things
Great animation, good fight scenes, Both clans and characters were very likeable.

Bad things
was kinda slow, I thought there would be more fight scenes. Probably the biggest reason why i thought it was "just good", Ending was predictable.

Noir 7/10
20011028.jpg

Okay this was done by someone else, but the sentiment still stands. I f they had halved the number of episodes it may have scored higher, but there are only som amy times you can see the same flash back or hear the same build up and crescendo before not caring any more

Kurogane Communication: 7/10

MAL List Tag said:
Solid character development, a very lovable lead and episodes short enough to not bore me. Rated 7/10 because, as ever, the ending wasn't great, it not even making sense why 'i-so-honi' had the mission he did. NEVER JUDGE ON ANIME BY ITS MAL RATING!

I ended up glad that I picked up the Kurogane box set for very little. It's fair to say it isn't anything jaw-dropping but, throughout the series, the quality remained consistent; it rarely boring me. The character development was decent and, by the end, I cared quite a bit about cute Haruka and her group of unique robotic friends.

Blue Submarine No. 6: 6/10

MAL List Tag said:
I liked the idea of someone testing humanity by seeing if they would go for peace over war, and the idea of a relationship between different species moved me. However, it ended badly; the 'seagirl' being paired up with the evil/rapist villain at random. Anime...

Had Blue Sub lasted longer and not gone done the usual anime path of having everything meaningful occur during the last episode, it probably would've been a lot better. The lead's jaded personality and his silent relationship with the 'seagirl' he saved made him a very good lead... but there just wasn't enough time for proper character development. Worth a watch, for sure, but not even the CG looks great by today's standards.

Mai-Otome Zwei: 7/10

MAL List Tag said:
They story made little to no sense, it somehow involving a monster set on destroying worlds crashing on Earl and using 'Children' from HiME. But, with 'My' stories sucking in general, I didn't care - I watched it for the characters/boobs. OTOME FANS ONLY!

I got what I expected: lots of fun, involving a fair bit of action and ladies with perfect sized boobs. I was disappointed that Sergay (Sir Gay Wang) never had a role to play, him being my favourite character, but the busjacking terrorism in the second episode and the comedy that ensued made up for it. Good value for the money I paid, in short.

Noir: 7/10

MAL List Tag said:
Once it reached the last stretch - getting past needless flashbacks and men standing still to be killed, whilst not shooting/missing - Noir actually became good; including some solid character development. With FAR better pacing, it would've been great...

Noir gradually improved as it went on. The first volume made me 5/10 it because it had flashbacks to what had only just happened; the flashbacks being totally needless time fillers. I also didn't (and still don't, in fact) get how the melody of a locket played on a laptop when Ms. French was walking away from it; resulting in her going to Japan. But the flashbacking, as well as the annoying, standard issue Bee Train staring contests, started to lessen with each passing episode, and I quite enjoyed some of the episodic content; the Black Lagoon-esque action aside. And it ended quite strong, with some involving character development, leading to my score going 5>6>7.

Human Crossing: 8/10

MAL List Tag said:
A collection of simple, yet beautiful slice-of-life stories; stories that are so 'normal' that they could be real. Refreshing to watch after seeing so much childish anime. It ended strongly, with the two last episodes being two of the best in the series.

The most underrated and underwatched anime ever? I think so!

I said before buying I'd like it, and I'm glad the series proved me right. Human Crossing opened strongly by starting with an episode about how a boxer started boxing to hide the fact his mother had scared his face as a child; the episode being a tale of getting over the past. It also ended equally powerfully by telling the story of a woman on trial for murder; exploring her past and what lead to her killing. The only real flaws the series has are the sometimes very forced happy endings and the disappointing art/animation. Even I noticed that pupils weren't matching sometimes, and the art tended to look ugly rather than showing the natural ugliness of humans. But, on the whole, HC is a gem I'm very glad I uncovered.

Yukikaze: 6/10

MAL List Tag said:
The plot made very little sense; the last episode turning it into a complete mess. And NONE of the characters were developed enough for me to care, or even understand. It got 6/10 only because it looked quite nice and was easy to watch.

Yukikaze is a weird one, fur sure. Throughout the series an attempt to show a bond between the lead and his superior officer was made... but nothing was shown or revealed that told viewers why they were supposed to be friends, or why they were who they were. And the story wasn't even explained. Really, I only watched it for the pretty aerial duels, full of abbreviations (the first disc has 18 pages worth of them as extras!)... and yet, I had no trouble watching it from start to finish. Most odd.

Gasaraki 7/10
I was always quite eager to see this series and I managed to pick the set up cheap fairly recently. I'm not the biggest fan of mecha anime but I've been keeping an open mind and have started to appreciate them a little more now, as long as they're done properly. This series has quite an adult feel to it, it can be fairly political and it doesn't rely massively on mecha action. It's a slow paced series, which I normally quite like but I must admit, at times it did become a little tedious. Overall, the story is fairly simple until the very final episode. I thought the final episode itself was excellent and made the series worth watching in the end. I think it's fair to say that I had high expectations going into this series (I'm not sure why exactly) and it didn't live up to them but it was a good, solid anime series, just nothing special. It had it's up's and down's, one minute I was getting really into the series, the next, I was losing interest slightly. I believe this is one of those series to forget you even have and then eventually, somewhere down the line, re-watch it again. I'm sure I'll appreciate it a little more the next time around.

The Darkness Series 4/10
My girl is in the habit of buying any cheap anime sets she can get her hands on. Well, I'm at a loss when it comes to reviewing this series. It's so bad at times that it's good. Plenty of Urotsukidoji tentacle sex, if that's your thing and much recommended if you like anime girl-on-girl action. Other than that, you got some story where aliens are making every woman on earth sex crazy, the army sex orgy was particularly hilarious, another about an alien sexxing up an all-female space crew, & another involving a pop star and um, sex. Really, what more is there to say?

Sakura Diaries 4/10
Just picture the scene.....guy moves to tokyo to study, stays with his slightly younger cousin and hey, what do you know....there's sexual tension between the two. This is what I call good family viewing. There's nothing like a bit of the ol' cousin loooove. Anyway, if that's not strange enough, let me delve. So, one moment, she's onto him like she wants 'it' bad (This is before he realises it's his cousin) and then fast forward a couple of episodes, he's attacking her with sexual frustrations and she's all "Oh no no, what are you doing?". Now okay, I think at this point, we should forget that they're even cousins (because that's what they seem to want us to think at times) and just look into this a little more. I mean, this girl leads this guy on for a few episodes like she wants it and then when he suddenly wants it she's all 'Oh no no', typical woman. Anyway, eventually the guy comes to his senses and gets the hell outta there. Other than that, if you like a bit of cousin on cousin, big tittie groping then I highly recommend this series.

Now I know, also, it's not that big a deal anyway.

However, I'd like to make an official statement to anyone who cares:

I, Yuvie, would like to make a wholehearted apology to anyone who was offended by my double post which I replaced with the term 'bla'. I'm deeply sorry if there's anyone else out there who is having a hard time 'understanding' why I didn't just delete my second post. I will thrive to make sure something like this doesn't happen again.

**** off, you wanker: I know you made a post insulting my ability to grade anime, later deciding it'd be for the best to avoid such childish antics. And you claim to be a married man; despite your Bleach filler love affair? Pffffffffff.

PS: You being old and awarding Gasaraki 7/10 gives me hope. I expect it to be the worst anime ever, so it's nice seeing someone with the same high level of maturity - highlighted by your manga taste - not score it lowly.

PS 2: Make a MAL account BEFORE you have 100's of titles to list. Do it while you're green to stay... err, clean?
