Proposed Simulwatch - Mai-HiME

Was supposed to watch this friday...Never mind!

I had initially freaked out - As this was episode 5 it was time to change the disc. But the box that came with the american volume 7 had a dvd missing. I was panicing until I realised that Beez released the series over here on only 6 dvds!

But now that empty space will haunt me forever...

Episode 5 - Rain -- Tears...

A good episode for some character development. We get shown a bit more of Mai's determination, whilst also developing some more emotion between her and Tate. We also get some more introduction for other side characters, Akane and Miyu. As well as some added foreshadowing about other HiME and the Orphan that's still on the loose. Not much to talk about with this one but it's still very enjoyable.

I should probably watch episode 6, so that i'm caught up, but it's 3:30am so...Not if I want some semblance of a sleep patern :D

Eight might come later. Depends on how tired I am from running across town for the next few hours...

Episode 6 - The Fiery Age of 17

17, 17, 17, 17, 17, 17...

In this episode we meet the 17, definitely 17, year old Midori - who is easily distracted from her task. We learn that she is a HiME, with a flair for dramatics, who is very mysterious and even has links to the school nurse. It's interesting that this role for Yukari Tamura was aired alongside the first season of Nanoha and how similar, yet different, the two "magical girls" are. Although it was an interesting way to write her more into the show, giving her the posistion of Mai's teacher for japanese history for which she clearly has a passion!

More fanservice and more character interactions. We learn that Tate and Shiho go a long way back and that she has a large complex for him; Takumi being the reverse for Mai. Mai's reactions to situations are brilliant and the staying over at the shrine was well done. And Nagi is still mysterious and likes sitting in high places.

Episode 7 - The Lost Kittens

A little bit of soul searching for Mikoto reminds us that she's looking for her brother. We also get properly introduced to, my personal favourite character, Yuuki Nao - A devious little HiME who lures men in only to destroy them. And it seems her and Mikoto bonded after fighting! Their relationship does seem to be an interesting one though with the dynamics not totally clear.

The end of the episode served up a few interesting revelations, with Nagi stepping in, from a high place of course, and stating that HiME must absolutely not fight each other. But what's interesting is that a few cracks are beginning to show in Mai's and Mikoto's relationship. This really came out of nowhere - as did the last minute introduction to Alyssa Searrs, with Miyu watching intently.

We get a lot more interactions with the side characters in this episode again. I feel that the show has done a good job up till now, to not overload you with it's hugely rich cast of characters. It's also not dragging too slowly and is advancing the plot, little by little. Mai's meeting with Mashiro near the end being fruitless, rather than serving a purpose for her.

I don't...Remember what episode it's supposed to be up to (part of me thinks...10?) I...Don't really think that matters anymore though. I get the feeling this is becoming a solo endevour :p

If anybody reading this has yet to watch the series, and still wants too, from this post on you really don't want to read my thoughts. Here comes the plottttt~

Episode 8 - The Precious Thing

I forgot about how quickly the tone changed in this. The start of the episode is all fun and games, a lot of light hearted moments developing more character interactions, before rapidly turning into a much darker tone. My memories are playing tricks on me, I thought it turned darker a bit quicker than this but nope!

Clearly the big revelations this episode came from the Akane, Kazu and Miyu situation. We learn that Akane is a HiME!.......except that now she's not. Using the song that Alyssa sings, as a background piece for Akane's HiME introduction, was genius. And so, Miyu is revealed to be an android who kills Akane's child, just as quickly as we're introduced to it. And that wasn't even the biggest shock, Kazu dieing was. Nagi's prophetic words about losing the most precious thing to you was actually the life of the person you most cared about. This twist was delivered very nicely - quickly, but not so fast that it's an afterthought. It's a very intriguing plot twist, and one that gets you thinking about other characters...

Speaking of which we did get some more character interactions. Akira and Takumi have an interesting relationship which seems to be opening up, Nao is still wooing stupid leechers, the art teacher Ishigami has proposed for Sister Yukariko to become his art model (leecherous perv!) and Mikoto showed off amazing dimension warping powers by appearing from underneath a Nun's dress! That's not even mentioning the scaryness of Fujino, how little the headmistress can exert herself, AND what happend between Mai, Tate and Reito - With Mai openly using her HiME powers in front of Reito (although, how did Mai land on top of Reito...When she fell down first? ANIME.) And yet all of this doesn't feel like we're being bogged down, despite the massive cast.

Not to mention the fact that there's a giant cavern system beneath the schools library. So much happend in this episode that I could talk about it for hours...And of course what better way to follow up a serious episode, then a beach episode!

Ok I was going to post about 2 episodes but...Holy crap this one came out rather large. Although considering what happend during it then it's not that much of a surprise! Easily one of my favourite episodes of the series, that plot twist is a game changer for sure.

I *FINALLY* have time to go back to this! Two weeks of exams, coursework and the occasional Vita/Binary Domain moments have eaten any Hime time. I'd say about how this simulwatch should likely have finished by now but...Convention left a LONG time ago...

Episode 9 - The Sea, The Maidens and Natsuki's Secret

What better way to follow up an amazingly plot revealing episode, then a beach episode! Of course it wasn't all fun and games - We got a little look at Natsuki, throwing a bouquet of flowers off of a cliff and having flashbacks about her past. And of course..."that" infamous pose! It was nice to get some drive as for why Natsuki is going after District 1.

That's not to say that the beach part was bad; it most certainly was not. It gave us some good laughs, whilst also developing Mai and Reito's relationship. We also got some character development for Takumi and Akira - I've mentioned it before, however Mai-HiME is really good at developing it's characters despite the fact that it has a huge cast. And of course the foreshadowing, if you know where to look!

I...Didn't post my ep 10 thoughts yesterday? Huh, guess I have been a bit more dense than usual lately...Short version go!

Episode 10 - Cake Wars!!!

Cooking! Orphan! Hilarity! Akira's secret revealed! Foreshadowing to the extreme! Fumi's mad maid skillz!

So yeah, Alyssa is a Super Saiyan and Akira being a girl are the big talking points. Alyssa is going to call in the "Golden Age" by making Orphans! That scene at the half way make is made all the more hilarious if you pay attention to the upper left corner and notice that the Father's body actually gets replicated! But of course Akira being a HiME is a huge revelation, and a kick ass ninja at that! Of course Takumi isn't fooled by Akira's evasion...Which adds an interesting dynamic to their relationship!

Also Takumi, you could at least be a little fazed by the giant monsters and the giant frog that spits out a giant mace.

Episode 11 - Dance of Light and Darkness

A vampire on the loose eh? Looks more like an Orphan to me! It's taking the blood of girls to find out if they are HiME or not. We also learn that the mark is an easy way of finding out also.

The number on the collar of the stuffed animal Natsuki found turned out to be pretty interesting, leading to bank accounts for Iwasaka Pharmaceuticals and The Searrs Foundation. Natsuki is getting closer to the truth.

The end of the episode brought about a lot of interesting changes in relationships. Sister Yukariko getting close to the art teacher Ishigami, Tate demanding an answer from Mai and of course Sister Yukariko being another HiME!

We're being served up with new HiME every episode at the moment! I'm going on like a broken record here, but My-HiME manages to do character development well despite the large cast. And the animation is consistant and very vibrant with colour whenever the HiME are involved. A lot of questions are being answered, yet more are being asked! At this point there is still a good blend of character development, whilst still advancing the main plot.

Edit: Like how my "short version" of episode 10 still ended up being larger than my post for episode 11...

Hahaha. This is why we don't tempt fate. A bout of nasty flu (at this time of year...Not quite sure how myself...) led me into a second fight against appendicitus, which again turned out not to be appendicitus but it still took me out pretty badly. I swear i'll finish this, even if it ends up killing me!! I'll likely marathon the rest from now on, after this episode, because it's just getting silly now.

Episode 12 - The Smile of an Angel

Mashiro's mysterious phone call and Yukariko's pained look at Fujino sets up an intriguing air of mystery. Ishigami also shows off that he's a bit of a slippery begger when it comes to enticing Yukariko. And also was that something which Midori almost uncovered? Fuka/12/Seal?

There was some progression in the Mai-Tate-Reito love triangle aspect, even if it was minimal. Tate almost makes a confession and Reito sees it from the shadows.

Mashiro's mysterious phone call doesn't last long as we learn the identity of yet another HiME in Yukino. We learn of her childs ability, and we also gain some insight into her backstory with a bit of Haruka's to boot.

And yet the main plot still moved along. Natsuki got too close and required Mai and Mikoto's help, along with a tip from Yukino and her Child Diana, to save her. Yet Miyu and Alyssa reveal themselves as the antagonists. Whilst it wasn't very long the "fight" between Miyu and Natsuki & Mikoto was well animated. But how interesting that the Priest took the fall for the Orphan attacks and then was fired by the Searrs Foundation. It was good to see a bit more of the "masterminds" behind this, even if it was brief shots. It'll be interesting to see the impact that Miyu and Alyssa have now that they call the shots.

Tried 3 different dvd players before volume 4 worked...Jeez. This is turning into a battle of attrition...

Episode 13 - Night of the Tamayura

We get early confirmation that there are supposed to be 12 HiME, thanks to Midori. And we know nine of them already, potentially ten if Alyssa is a HiME. Mikoto, Mai, Natsuki, Nao, Midori, Yukariko, Akira, Yukino and Akane. Of course Midori didn't figure Akane into that headcount as they didn't know that she was a HiME. Speaking of which, we find out what happend to her at the end.

We get quite a good look at Mai and her troubles in this episode, but also at the relationships of other couples. A brief interlude showed us that Yukariko is trying with Ishigami, whilst Akira and Takumi are getting closer. Mai on the other hand seems to be getting more and more stressed out about everything going on around her, which comes to somewhat of a climax in the forest with Reito. The love triangle takes a turn for the extreme, just as a giant explosion engulfs the land. Alyssa has attacked with her child with Nagi calling her a fake HiME. A nice set up for the next episode...

Episode 14 - The Targeted Academy

The school is taken over by an army! Haruka's time to shine! Fearlessly kicking the tank like it was no thing! Fearlessly sacrificing herself for Yukino! Her brashness is one of the things I love about her character.

The soliders are looking for HiME as they're with the Searrs Foundation. Completely cutting off communications whilst going on the attack, posing as the good guys looking for terrorists. They figured out Nao, Yukino and Yukariko quite easily.

Mai finally gives an explanation to Tate. We get more of an explanation behind her motives and feelings, before what seems like resignation to the cause.

In the underground shrine, a pillar has been raised. What also awaits them is a trip to a giant infrastructure, the Obsidian Palace, and a meeting with other HiME. And the orchestrator - Headmistress Mashiro!

Again the plot plods along at the same pace whilst still keeping up a great deal of exposure to the characters. It's nice that we're getting some insight into Mai at last, as well as some set up for the future...

Episode 15 - A High School Girl Soars to the Heavens

The part where everyone went off to save the school, set to a cheesy insert song, kind of reminded me of old mecha series. Still, despite a lot happening it feels like there's not much to talk about. Mai took the brunt of Alyssa's Child's attack and had Kagatsuchi change, with the episode ending with her apparent death. With the destruction of her Child Alyssa is no longer a HiME, with her death actually being quite sad. The organisation holding off their plan until the next HiME cycle. I do think the preview was quite entertaining with everyone believing Mai was dead, whilst she was rebutting it.

Episode 16 - Parade

Well of course they aren't going to kill off the main character. An episode where everything has returned to normal, an episode of celebration...And of course the next huge plot twist, potentially larger than the last!

Characters still got built up despite this. Shiho's hatred for Mai grew, the HiME Sentai force was created and its members got to know each other better, through the power of karaoke and some fantastic get ups. Even Natsuki and Nao started getting along. Takumi finding out that Akira is a girl...

But of course the twist will end all of that. It was pulled off well, much like the death of loved ones earlier in the series. The Orphans now gone, The HiME star growing and Nagi declaring that the HiME must fight one another and kill their Childs. I remember when I first saw this twist, it was a turn I wasn't expecting. And of course at the time I had completely forgotten that there were supposed to be 12 HiME...

I was interested in this part coming back into watching this. I think it's aged quite well, if you don't know what's going to happen of course. It sets the plot up nicely for the final 10 episodes and changes the character dynamics.

My memorys a little fuzzy about the order of events after this, so i'm looking forward to what's coming!

No problems playing this dvd thankfully. I think the cover for this one is probably my favourite cover out of all of them. Had a wallpaper version as my background at one point but can't re-find it for the life of me...

Also holy bajeez, the menus for this dvd contain HUGE spoilers. Glad I saw this before...

Episode 17 - Deceiptful Lips

The music used in the first 4 minutes is one of the best pieces in the entire series imo, even if it is just vocal. An instrument-less version of Mezame. Such a shame that there wasn't a version like this on either OST. Using it as the recap for the last episode, whilst also gauging the reactions of the various HiME, was brilliant. The track is haunting enough that it creates such a tense atmosphere and that really forebodes whats to come.

And so Nagi explains that the HiME Star is approaching Earth and that the only way to stop it is to be the last HiME standing. If no one comes out of the battle royale as victor, the Earth is destroyed - with an added bonus of the winner getting "tremendous power." And there are still 3 HiME unaccounted for...

Very much an episode about advancing character relationships. Akira and Takumi got VERY close, Ishigami started showing off his true colours, Takumi has a heart donor available at last and Tate and Mai's relationship taking another turn. And at the very end, Mai is attacked by a new unknown HiME...

Episode 18 - The Beginning

Revelations! The Obsidian Prince is about to awaken, however a big battle occurs between the HiME thanks to a lie perpetuated by Sister Yukariko and Ishigami. Nao is struck in the eye by a part of her Child thanks to the battle with Natsuki, further fueling her hatred towards everyone. Lots of character development before...

The reveal of a new HiME! A long time ago a girl died at an archaelogical dig by the name of Mashiro Kazahana - The Headmaster! Midori squares off against her but is met instead by a new HiME, Fumi! With her introduction that leaves us with just 2 unknown HiME...

A really good episode this one. Whilst not flashing or overly heavy on the action it serves to move everything along at a good pace. Towards the end of the episode it gave off a vibe of isolation and desperation. Mai is also looking more and more like she's being affected by the strain of what's happening.

Feeling utterly awful physically again tonight, so just the one episode!

Episode 19 - Labyrinth of the Heart

So Midori looks like she got beaten pretty comprehensively by Fumi. It makes you wonder just how strong Fumi is, despite the fact that we didn't see anything! We also get a good look at the different sides of some characters. Tate's past, Natsuki and Shizuru's relationship and Takumi's feelings towards the operation. It's no surprise that Mai seems to take it quite hard, Takumi's feelings are pretty strong.

Mai and Mikoto find out that Akira is a HiME but the stress is starting to show big time for Mai, with her lashing out at Mikoto. The first half of the series dealt with a more level headed Mai so to see this personality dip lends itself well to the tone that the show is going towards. And Ishigami is being a dick which is helping the tone also! And the part with Reito and Mikoto wasn't just huge foreshaddowing AT ALL. Massive background church bells blaring, Reito covered in darkness and staring at the HiME Star...

And then Mai comes to the realisation that Takumi will disapear if Akira's Child is defeated. At this point you have to feel for poor Takumi. He's likely Mai's loved one, he's Akira's loved one and the poor guy has a heart condition! He just can't catch a break. Not only that but she's coming to terms with her feelings towards Tate, whilst having Shiho's scorn thrown at her. It's no wonder she started questioning herself.

I love this part of the series coming up. It's overly dramatic but I do think it's handled well (Up to...That certain point.) Especially this next episode!

Episode 20 - Dance of Flames/The Tears of Destiny

Nao's back and she has gone crazy! And geez Shiho that's some crazy face you have there. It's no surprise that Mai is feeling the strain thanks to all of this, especially learning in the flashback that her Mother's death might have been a cause of what she did as a child. And out of all the people to help attempt to snap her out of it, it's Natsuki to the rescue. Her character has developed well to the point of trusting Mai.

Of course this all comes to boiling point when a beserked Mikoto defeats Akira's Child. Takumi disapears in the arms of Mai who snaps and attacks Mikoto. The tension between those two during the fight is well played out, with the BGM Mezame again being used to a hauntingly great effect. Mai's breakdown was played out fantastically over the course of the last few episodes. It's a far cry from the Mai we know from the start of the series.

And still there are more reveals! Ishigami reveals that a Child gets stronger when it defeats other HiME. His twisted plot is certainly coming to fruition, attempting to orchestrate Mai's defeat by manipulating the HiME. The brother that Mikoto is searching for is confirmed to be the Obsidian Prince and an unknown Child attacks during Mai and Mikoto's fight.

Episode 21 - The Obsidian Prince Awakens

Mysterious Mr John Smith who wants Miyu's remains. I highly suspect this isn't the last we've seen of him, yet he acknowledges that the Searrs Foundation is still around and controlling the HiME festivals. Although the Professor's note about the next festival in 300 years refering back to this one as a fairytail is interesting when you take Mai-Otome into account. But that's a story for another day of course...

Smith reveals to Natsuki that her Mother was trying to sell her as a research subject to the Searrs Foundation, which leads to her almost breaking down as well. It all leads up to the point of our penultimate HiME reveal - Shizuru, who has an obsession with Natsuki.

And it's confirmed that Reito is the vessel for the Obsidian Prince, with Mikoto now protecting him. Mashiro is revealed to be the Crystal HiME and that she wants to defeat Reito so that the curse on the HiME is broken. The Obsidian Prince is her brother and she has put her soul into a Child so that she can fight.

I think the interesting part of the series at this point is how everything is shifting, even in the way the story is being told. Whilst it is still very character driven now, the first half of the series was almost dedicated to it. The plot didn't exactly go slowly but it kind of flowed in any direction that they wanted it to go. This second half feels more...Restricted in a way. The staff have their direction that they want to take it in and it feels like they're just ploughing through with it. A lot of exposition from earlier in the series has been lost. The last few episodes have felt quite a lot like that, with plot points being thrown at you with little explanation. In this last episode we've gone from learning about Mashiro being the Crystal HiME, to revealing her Child form for all of 5 seconds, before being defeated by Reito - not even on screen! It doesn't nessicarily feel like they're rushing, but that it's a bit more focused on the story that it wants to tell. I still love the series and think it is still strong in these episodes, but as i'll say when I get there I do think the series runs out of gas before the last episode.

Episode 22 - Collapse

Whilst I don't have much to say about this one it really stepped up a gear towards the end of the episode. Nao's gone crazy, Shizuru's becoming very obssessed with Natsuki to the point of doing unmentionables, Yukino is snapping and starting to stand up for everything Haruka does and Mai has gone off the deep end. It's setting us up for a lot of intriguing battles.

Speaking of, the key that Mashiro gave Midori has finally been used. There's someone in that pod, of which the anime is heavily hinting at, but Mikoto stands in Midori's way. It's interesting that there are battle lines being drawn for 1 vs 1's right now. Midori vs Mikoto, Shizuru vs Yukino and Nao Vs Mai/Natsuki. And yet we STILL don't know the identity of the final HiME (But come on. At this point there's only really one person who it could be. More heavy handed foreshadowing also points towards it...)

Episode 23 - Love and Friendship, Heartlessness

At long last we finally see Mikoto's Child, however Midori sacrifices herself for the ressurrection of Miyu! The waking up sequence was pretty cool in my opinion. But the interesting question is whether Midori wiped her memories or not. It's a tricky situation to be put in for sure and I certainly wouldn't know what to choose.

This episode is one that made me realise how much I love Haruka's character and that even when faced with death she still fought for Yukino's sake. I adore that brashness she shows whilst still being hopelessly clueless. I think it was bittersweet how she's always stood up for Yukino, but over the past 2 episodes Yukino has been the one to stand up for Haruka. Even despite the armband tosing being so overly cheesy and dramatic!

Whoops, lost track of the time so only one episode tonight with the final two epsiodes tomorrow.

Episode 24 - Love is to Fight

Ishigami is a dick. Not much more to say other than that! Yukariko's sacrifice was noble and somewhat redeems her character.

The dream world that Mai saw actually made me think that a slice of life RomCom set in this world, without all of the HiME and Child stuff, would actually work quite well.

Nao's tragic backstory is revealed and so too is the last HiME, Shiho! Shizuru defeating Nao in turn makes Natsuki realise things about herself and regains her ability to use her HiME powers. It's set up a rather satisfying fight developing between Natsuki and Shizuru. But with the most loved person dieing then logically wouldn't killing Shizuru also destroy Natsuki? It's a rather brave decision to fight by Natsuki.

Mai comes to the realisation before her fight with Shiho that whomever dies will make Tate disapear. I felt that his death was handled really well and was pretty powerful. You have to feel for Mai who's now had two of her most precious loved ones die in her arms.

For me I feel like this is where the series finally runs out of steam. The next two episodes aren't bad by any stretch of the imagination, but I feel like the production team just had to wrap things up starting with this episode, hence three HiME going down in a short space of time. I'll obviously say why I feel that when I post about them tomorrow (Cause of THAT final episode) but at times over the past few episodes the drama has gotten just a bit too "cheesy." Shiho putting the scarf around Tate whilst symbolic just kind of made me roll my eyes. It was nice that Tate finally decided on his feelings but shoving it off on Mai, who then refused to do anything, felt like they were towing the line just a bit too much. Don't get me wrong, still love this show and I do like me a bit of melodrama but I just don't really feel it from this point on.

MercenaryRaiden, alone, bravely soldiering on to the end.

/salutes

I haven't joined in because I don't remember enough of the show and DAT ENDING meant I couldn't face going through it again, but I have been reading your thoughts and reliving the show that way. That gigantic arse ilmaestro has been sighted at Eurogamer, so I'll be sure to give him a virtual slap for abandoning his own simulwatch.

Haha thank you, to be fair despite all the early interest I'm not sure whether this was the best time for a simulwatch. I'm looking at my own schedule here and I take pretty much a month off combined, which is more than the total of the whole simulwatch. Obviously I didn't plan on becoming horrendously ill but I did plan on the work that knocked me out for about 2 weeks. That also affected me pretty badly, I noticed about 7 episodes ago that I was leaning more on just reporting on the episode itself and not putting in my opinion on anything. I enjoy these simulwatches as I'm not a great writer and I do like to challenge myself. But this time has been rather poor, all excuses aside.

I've been looking forward to rewatching the final episode because of that ending. I did not enjoy it the first time around, although my views were a lot more rigid back then. I would quite like to jump straight into Mai Otome but...I don't know whether I'd want to do that, as I remember the quality of some elements of Otome being highly suspect compaired to HiME, and I'm also not sure if I'd want to simulwatch it, time commiting and opinion wise.

Plus I still haven't finished watching the Idolm@ster which is just ludicrous! And so, not holding anything back for this finale, without further ado...This is going to be a big post!

Episode 25 - The Moment of Destiny (I think they spelt Deus Ex Machina wrong here. COUGH.)

One thing I forgot to mention in episode 24 is how forced I felt Tate's death was in regards to Mai. For me it was just one step too far. They were reconstructing Mai's character over the back of about 6 or 7 episodes and then throw it away again right before the penultimate episode. It felt like drama for drama's sake. Yes, I liked the way it was done but it just felt...Too much. (The more I read of that the more it doesn't make sense but...I can't put it into the words I really want to say.)

But I suppose that the strength of Mai to now push on and deal with that is what's being highlighted here. The talk between her and Natsuki on the school grounds, and at Mai's flat, also highlights to me how much Natsuki's character has grown, especially over the last few episodes. She understands and realises that she was pushing away the people that she cared most about. Her sacrifice against Shizuru was indeed brave and a good personification of that new attitude towards life. It's telling that throughout the last episode or two Natsuki has known that she wouldn't survive the fight with Shizuru, even if she won. The final scene with her and Shizuru was beautiful in it's own way and really well done.

I'm interested in that I don't have a high opinion of Mikoto. The things that she's done haven't been of her own volition, having been under the power of the Obsidian Prince, yet I can't bring myself to feel much sympathy for her. I want to say it's because her character wasn't shelled out that much, but it was. She's just a very...Plain and simple character. And whilst there are a lot like that in this series, thanks to its huge roster, I just feel that other characters stories are better - despite the fact that Mikoto's is more pivitol than most. I find myself appreciating her character more in this rewatch then I did during my first watch.

And slightly hypocritical here, despite the fact that I've laid blame to fast pacing over the past two episodes I have appreciated the build up that this episode provides. Before the first half we very clearly get the battle lines drawn for Natsuki vs Shizuru and Mai vs Mikoto. It reminds me of one of the first scenes in anime that I saw which has always stuck with me, Noir episode 25 where Mirielle stands before the place that will become the battleground between her and her long time friend Kirika, with yet again Yuki Kaijura's brilliant soundtrack and an absolutely haunting vocal version of Canta Per Me, setting the scene for that episode ABSOLUTELY PERFECTLY.

And so Midori did not wipe Miyu's memory, trusting her completly. And despite the anime foreshadowing Mai vs Mikoto, it's actually Miyu vs Mikoto! But again, pacing issues cause me to question this! After that short opening fight the next thing we see is the raised pillar of Mikoto's defeat! Obviously this was debunked when Mikoto shows up towards the end. But this throws up so many questions, most importantly - who the blue bloody hells pillar IS that?! It feels forced for the sake of a conclusion that's, quite frankly, rushed and almost a debacle.

Don't get me wrong though, I still love this episode. The final one? Ehhhhhhhh.....

Episode 26 - Shining Days

Wild Mashiro appears! Mashiro uses Deus Ex Machina! It's super effective!!!

sigh. It STILL leaves a bitter taste, even now. Don't get me wrong, I still love this series to bits and I still feel like this was a good episode AT POINTS, but man. You just RETCON everything? That's just so...Ugh!

Alright let me try and get my reactions across a bit better, as the above reads like some kind of flame baiting that you'd expect on the internet. I'm not against a happy ending, far from it. I infact love it when the hero or similar protaganist suceeds from the throws of despair and saves the day. But lets take a look at something more modern, say Gurren Lagann. Did they retcon episode 8 with Kamina's death? Nope. They built up Simon because of it. They gave him a fleshed out story to carry on after that event. Even at the VERY END of the series where Nia dies they don't retcon it. I know we're talking about two very different studio's and productions here but one feels like they knew what they wanted to achieve, where as the other studio it seems ran out of steam with their ideas and where they wanted to go. With Mai they set up a very similar situation in that two of her loved ones have died and that she is overcoming both of their deaths. And then they just make a method where everyone comes back to life and defeats the bad guy with the power of love.

I feel a bit annoyed with myself actually for making that comparison, because it doesn't feel that fair! I don't want to make it sound like I'm being overly negative towards this but that's the way it's coming out. I must admit that knowing what was coming probably prepared me a lot better for everyone's revival. I did feel that everyone's loved ones coming back was quite sweet, although counter balanced by everyone teaming up being ridiculously cheese. Mai's coming to terms with her feelings whilst fighting Mikoto was also well done, yet again it felt a bit forced to just shove it into a 24 minute block.

Still, as far as the actual episode goes it does do a lot of explaining. Alyssa's was the other pillar (Er...did...we not see only ONE pillar before the HiME festival began after Alyssa's death...?) and all of the bigging up of Tate's skills in Kendo was used in a cool effect, as he used Miyu's sword arm (...er...) to fight Reito. He did get to look pretty awesome at the same time. And so the spirit of the Obsidian Prince actually possessed the body of Mikoto's brother, obviously down to the work of Nagi. The design of the possessed Obsidian Palace was pretty cool, as has the design of all the childs really.

Although having everyone go against the HiME star set to that background music again? I don't know what it is but the two times that song is used I just cannot take things seriously! It is so...I don't even know! The apology from Shizuru was pretty funny though, although I still think that's also down to that music.

And to be fair, despite what I feel about the Deus Ex Machina, I did enjoy the final minutes going through everyone with their happy ending, even if it was a bit of an injoke! Kazu's glinting eyes and sparkling teeth were hilarious, as was the lovey dovey with Akane, Haruka passing down the gauntlet whilst still making simple pronunciation mistakes was great (And another reason I adore her character!) Miyu and Nao as nuns was just brilliant for so many reasons, and in general it reminded me of that feeling I had a few episodes ago where I'd be really interested in a slice of life set in this universe with these characters. Although without the melodrama would it be that good...?

Thinking about it now that it's over, it isn't the ending that I have a problem with. It's the way it went about achieving that conclusion. It felt too rushed and finished up for conclusions sake. Whilst there weren't a huge amount of plot holes left open I would have liked some more explanation and development. Although, knowing what was coming did help because there were often a few times where Mai said if she'd win the festival then she'd "bring Takumi back." I just don't think they explained enough about the implications of the HiME star and winning the fesitival.

Although I wasn't sure if I was going to be done with Mai-Hime tonight. As part of my adoration for this series I used to buy a lot of paraphernalia belonging to it like art books and figures. There was one thing I really wanted to show off - The second Mai Hime fighting game for the psp - Senretsu! Shin Fuuka Gakuen Gekitoushi. It's not huge or exciting but there was a reason why I was waiting so late to show it. I needed the full HiME roster to be revealed before I could fully show it off spoiler free. Unfortunatly I forgot that Shiho's reveal was REALLY BLOODY LATE into the show, so much so that I thought her reveal was BEFORE Shizuru's, but alas. It's nothing to write home about and it's pretty geeky but...It's not something I've played in years. I don't have it ready now as I needed time to set it up and with my illnesses and work I just haven't had that time! So i'm unsure if i'll ever get around to showing it off but...It was ridiculously broken. Haruka being the hardest to unlock character, whilst also being a joke character, WAS RIDICULOUSLY STRONG despite not being a HiME user AT ALL. Heck even Midori was broken far more than most of the hidden characters, although Dark Mikoto and Super Natsuki were...geez.

So yes, once again I thank whomever this is reading my random drivel. I feel like my writing REALLY went downhill with this one thanks to circumstances out of my control. I did get unsure about continuing on with this on my own but...I kind of take the blame for it not starting up much in the first place. I had such enthusiasm for this yet I wasn't even here the weekend it started. I do wonder if someone had started up with their opinions on time whether this would have gone ahead more successfully, which had I been here would likely have been me even just to get the ball rolling. But still, even on my own it was fun just to sit down and rewatch something I adore after all this time, that I likely wouldn't have the drive or impotus to do if there wasn't these posts keeping me going. So thank you reader, and also thank you Mai-Hime for still standing the test of time, even if some of your reveals are sullied a little bit by knowing what's coming. For that I still give you an:

8/10

Edit: OH MY DAYS. This post is a LOT longer then I thought it would be. Er...ah....Dang it! :D

If I could give you a cookie for making it all the way to end of my crazy rantings - then I would!

So this ended up being a way more chaotic month for me than I expected... I'm glad I have your posts to read through when I get back to finishing this, MR!

Ha, ironically same for me. I actually feel really bad about taking around a month off during the middle of this, despite it turning into a solo endevour :p

Anyways thanks to Easter I managed to get back to my parents place and grabbed my psp and Senretsu, so maybe I'll get a video or two up of it at some point. It's pretty nifty, provided you lower your expectations as it's a psp anime fighter! :D

Dem PSP brawlers, I had actually forgotten that some Mai-HiME related ones even came out! But the Ikki-tousen ones aren't... terrible... maybe... so I can imagine it being alright.
