Proposed Simulwatch - Mai-HiME

so.... anyone started yet? :D

Now that i'm home I definitely will be starting this, although kinda dispointed there isn't already a big sprawling conversation going on :(

Would it make things easier for everyone if we started tomorrow?

I think that's a good idea, or everyone should watch the first episode by tomorrow.

I've watched the episodes but obviously haven't posted anything. The weekend is the only days out of this six day stretch where I am working, so I will probably start posting Monday or Tuesday.

What would have been more helpful would have been if you started, Ryo, given your apparent enthusiasm.

i don't lead, i follow

wait, is that right?

Ok I will start then. I haven't watched this show in nearly 5 years so it has been a while and I have forgotten some details of the plot. The first epsiode is a great set up for the 3 main characters and it also sets up the relationships between Mai and her sick brother. There is a great battle between Motoko and Natsui on the ship ( which spilts the boat in half )! And at the end we catch a quick glance of all the other characters. Great start.

Whoops! Fell asleep after I watched the episodes yesterday, so here is an already much delayed post!

I don't know if there's anyone watching this who hasn't seen it yet, but I'm going to do my posts in the style of watching it for the first time - so none of my posts will contain spoilers for future episodes. I must admit I've forgotten a lot of the subtle little nuances and hints that the series throws at you, so I'm particularly looking forward to re-watching it with the knowledge of what's to come. I also forgot how much I adored the soundtrack, somehow forgetting this was one of Kaijura's works before I started watching, so i'm likely going to have to hunt out my soundtrack cds and rip them again...

Although it's very annoying to be refering to characters without being able to name them just yet! :p

Episode 1 - This is a girl's important event

A strong first episode! Good character exposition, great animation and even some fanservice to top it off. It gave a really good account of what the series is going to be about, without really giving anything away! Some pretty good foreshadowing as well from the girl in the motorcycle outfit and the mysterious boy near the end.

This episode served as a really good introduction to our mains, although more specifically Tokiha Mai. We gain a good amount of insight into how caring she is for her brother Takumi, but also how strong she is with giving CPR to the mysterious sword wielding girl, and generally keeping a cool head with all this crazy stuff going on around her. You get the sense that she is going to be a fantastic lead with a strong personality.

In the other sense we get some mysterious looks at the girl in the motorcycle outfit and the mysterious sword wielding girl. Both of them, as well as Mai, have the same mysterious Mark on their bodies whilst also being refered to as "HiME". The mysterious motorcycle girl, with an even more mysterious mechanical beast called Duran, giving out a strong warning not to go to Fuka Academy.

The battle scenes between the two were well animated and choreographed. The animation and colours are definitely vibrant and they stand out. A special mention as well for the music, authored by Yuki Kaijura, which was very fitting and helped set the tone. It's also being backed by a really good set of VA's. Next episode looks like it'll be set in the Academy and will give us a broader look at some of the other characters.

That's usually how these things go, yup! We can have a rest day or two somewhere in there if people need to catch up.

Are we going via today being episode 1 or 3 then? If it's 3 then i've got my impressions ready to post at any time.

-Mai goes all David Hayes on Tate

-Round 2 FIGHT! Never cut off a girls hair............. and never shoot at a girl who can create black holes?

Episode 1 thoughts:

Well having rewatched the series a lot of times, I still really liked watching the first episode episode again. Still made me laugh at some scenes, Yuichi trying to perform CPR on Mikoto is one of them. Natsuki and Mikoto's fight was still as awesome as the first time I watched it.

I absolutely adore the soundtrack, so can't wait to hear my favourite pieces.

Favourite character so far has to be Mai, not because she has the same VA as Rena ;) but because she has such a great personality. My other favourite characters has yet to appear.

My apologises but my episode 2 post will be delayed till tomorrow, thanks to life, exams and being unable to actually access what I wrote! It'll also be quite late tomorrow but it will be up at some point in the evening.

Agreed, I adore Mai for the same reason(s) as you. My favourite character has yet to appear as well...

Awesome :)

My episode 2 post will also be delayed towards the end of the week.

Ha, I almost forgot to put my impressions up tonight...Having an exam makes me forget things. Or replace everything in my head with control ledgers. I am so very very confused...Also these posts were done whilst under the same level of stress so expect poor...everything.

Episode 2 - After-School Secrets

This episode introduces us to a lot of new characters - Haruka, my second favourite of the series (But not second in Otome ;)) who is a brash hard headed student council member, Reito the Vice President who is very handsome looking, Fujino Shizuka the calm President and...Well we'd probably be here all day if I keep going like this. We do get names for Natsuki, Mikoto and Nagi though. Nagi does seem to like being on high places though...

The episode serves as a little bit of the fallout for the first episode, whilst also introducing us to that boatload of new characters. It seems that Natsuki is working with a teacher at the school. More talk about the mysterious headquarters, as well as serving up some light comedy with Mikoto and the curry bread.

We get a short introduction to Orphan's and the HiME with the episode ending on Mai's awakening...A fairly good episode that served to ferry things along.

Episode 3 - Dance of Flames/Star's Oath

This was a great episode, giving us some explanations on the HiME. Their weapons are called Elements, proof that they are a HiME, and they have their own "Child." In Mai's case it is Kagutsuchi. The scene of his awakening certainly gave me Evangelion vibes with the way it opened its mouth and changed its eyes. It's fair to assume at this point that Duran is Natsuki's Child.

We get a lot of character interactions too with Natsuki and Shizuru, Tate and Mai, Mai and Takumi and more specifically Mai and her late Mother. We also find out that the young girl in the wheelchair, Mashiro, is the Headmaster of Fuka Academy. She seems fairly young to be headmaster! And so after Mai managed to burn a field in episode 1, here she burns an entire hillside. Oh Mai :D

For some reason out of all of the early episodes (Before...You know.) this is the one I remember the most...And i'm not sure why...

Also this is like the third time I've accidently started the dvd up in deutch. I'm...Tempted to keep it like this the next time it happens, despite not knowing the language. Should make for...Interesting.

And then I realised there was a mini episode at the end of every episode and not every dvd ala Otome. Not even sure how I can handle them, if at all. Most of them are pretty much fanservice-y or comedic but...Some of them have a small bit of character development.

Episode 4 - The Mischief of the Wind

A panty thief! A...Lot of them at that. This was a pretty good episode for a comedy and fanservice mix. Natsuki explains that there are more HiME in the school and that they are being gathered for some purpose. However this episode felt more lighthearted and certainly gave us some development for Natsuki. I think this is where I started to like her character, as she starts to open up a little bit more towards Mai and Mikoto. Not much else to say about this episode other than that!

Hmm, I can't find my posts on AoD from the time it was on-air via google, I guess the older stuff was nuked during one of the software changeovers. :(

Episode 1

I was pleased I remembered the words to the OP and ED. ^^;

Never liked Takumi's seiyuu... and according to MAL this is the only role he's done.

Mikoto/Natsuki fight holds up pretty well, the sense of weight given to Mikoto's sword is excellent.

My head exploded with "so happy I'm watching this again" feelings when we get a glimpse of a bunch of the main characters at the end.

Overall, a spectacular start

god some of the animation is dated, and reused sequences on black backgrounds like pokemon.
Yup, this show really has the feel of some sort of bridge between the 90s and the 21st century despite its relatively late release date. I think the characters work well within this though, and it adds to its charm.
