Original Hellsing Ultimate DVD release cancelled

I could be wrong but I read something about Manga not being able to license One Piece because a French company, who have no interest of releasing OP outside of France, have the Euro license.

If a French company has got the rights to Europe license they can sell it other countries in their license area, like what viz did with bleach as viz own the rights to European release while manga release it the UK now.

Dave, who supposedly got me banned: Yes, but the problem is the French company don't want to for whatever reason...or at least that's what I remember reading. Manga would've got it by now if they could; I see no reason for them to not have gotten it by now when they've had Bleach and Naruto for ages. Maybe Jerome can shed some light on the situation?

As for FMP, watching FMP in English is a downgraded experience when you miss out on hearing the wonderful voice of Satsuki Yukino as Chidori. Never miss out on hearing a voice acting goddess.

In other news, my Hellsing Ultimate steelbook turned up today - It's mint and lovely. If I do collect the series, I'll have to go down the steelbook route after seeing how sexy the LE Geneon releases are.

Well it was your own fault getting banned no one else.

Money talks, with Manga high sales figures agreement could come about, if one is required in the first place. One Piece has only just recently been released in english uncut, only the first 13 episode box set has been released so far. Manga would not release it until at least a few boxset are out in the states i.e naruto in the USA is up to boxset 9 released while the UK is only on boxset 7.

I am curious to see if they planning to release it in future.

I don't really remember or care - Paul gave me a semi-reminder last night that made me remember a little. I believe I talked to you in French due to you annoying me in a Saiyuki thread?

Likewise, I don't really care about One Piece. I was simply relaying some information that, for reasons unknown to me, came to the front of my wonderful mind.

Anyway, OT: Hellsing Ultimate.

After watching the first 30 minutes (had to stop because the Man United match is starting), I think it's one of the best pieces of animation I've witnessed. The entire thing reeks high quality; the art is the terrific, the usage of colour (blue and blacks to set the mood) has been perfect, the animation has flowed, the pacing has been fast without rushing and the direction has been top notch. It's on an entirely different level to the original series, which looks almost amateurish in comparison.

Aside from everything mentioned above, what I've liked the most about OVA is the British voice acting. All the British voice acting is top notch, Integra's voice actress doing a stunning job. Although I usually watch anime in Japanese, when there are relative unknowns putting in performances like this with British accents there's no chance I'm going to watch anime in a language I don't speak. I'll have to give the the first 5 series of the original series a re-watch in English.

I like the big breasted blonde chick (Seras?) much better this time around. In the original series she simply came across as a timid and obedient, not having any charm, but in the OVA she comes across as much more fiery and slightly insane at times. I might look for some 'research materials' later.

Anyway, in a nutshell: It's well worth the money, even at £10 per DVD. Highly recommended.

Gonzolol

The crappy art and animation is the main reason I gave up on the TV series after four episodes. Ultimate's higher production values make it a much more enticing proposition.

It wasn't entirely awful, just very inconsistent. It had a range going from great to terrible, though the OVA does wipe the floor with it in that regard, particularly the later episodes which look stunning in places.

It's such a shame Manga weren't able to bring this to us at the price they originally intended; it really is a fantastic series. If the remaining episodes keep up the quality then it's easily going to fit in my top 10, maybe even top 5 - The first episode was that impressive.

I think what improved the experience the most over watching the original series (looks aside) was how the very first scene showed how Integra (sp?) and Alucard came to be together. It was hard to understand why a super strong vampire would serve a lowly human in the series and, even after 5 episodes, no explanation was provided. It also helped explain why Integra looks so feminine and is called sir; I had assumed it was due to him being...err, a bishie? Whatever the Japanese call lady-like men.

I still might end up getting the Manga releases due to the the cost of importing the LE R1 releases. It'd cost a fair amount anyway but with the current exchange rate and my CC adding 2.75% (I think) on top it'd be a painful amount for 50 minutes. At least the LE releases are getting re-printed...

Up to episode four at least the direction and animation seem to get progressively better, so I suppose it all hinges on whether the Nazi's ruin it for you. Personally I wasn't bothered by them at all (they certainly make a better alternative to Incognito), though some seem to be put off by it.

When watching the trailers/ending, the German/nazi stuff didn't look great. That's my only concern about the future episodes at this point.

How many episodes are planned? I remember Jerome (who, most likely after me telling him he'd be asked 1000 questions, has vanished) saying a 5th episode is coming out...or something.

A 5th episode is due out soon I hear. So far each OVA has been roughly one volume of the Manga, however the last one combined two together so perhaps that will be the case from now on.

The manga has about 9 volumes out and apparently it will end on 10, so I'm guessing somewhere between 7 and 9 OVA's total. Could be a while before they finish though, each OVA seems to take about 6 months to produce.

Fabio: Don't attack Gonzo unless you've watched Gankutsuou; the best anime series known to man and dog. When Gonzo get it right they make bloody brilliant stuff.

/strokes his Gankutsuou box set
